The site descends from the street and is privileged with dynamic natural views toward a creek below and beyond. To incorporate the existing landscape into the daily life of the residents, the house steps down to the natural topography. A continuous and jogging retaining wall from outside to inside embeds the structure below natural grade at the front with flush transitions at its rear facade. All indoor spaces open up to a central courtyard which terraces down to the tree canopy, creating a readily visible and occupiable transitional space between man-made and nature. The courtyard scheme is simplified by two wings representing common and private zones - connected by a glass dining “bridge." This transparent volume also visually connects the front yard to the courtyard, clearing for the prospect view, while maintaining a subdued street presence. The staircase acts as a vertical “knuckle,” mediating shifting wing angles while contrasting the predominant horizontality of the house. Crips materiality and detailing, deep roof overhangs, and the one-and-half story wall at the rear further enhance the connection between outdoors and indoors, providing nuanced natural lighting throughout and a meaningful framed procession through the property. At times, the most remarkable spaces emerge when we begin with a clean slate. In this particular project, we had the privilege to design a completely custom home, starting from scratch for our client. They simply entrusted us with a piece of land, and from that point forward, we handled everything. Our primary objective for this project was to craft an exceptional, contemporary, and practical dream home for a family of four. By creatively manipulating height variations at the front of the house, we conceived the standout element of the home: the impressive windows that showcase the bespoke steel spinal staircase.

We had the privilege to photograph this dream hale located on the Big Island of Hawaii. The beautiful tropical architecture provided so many interesting perspectives it was hard to stop pressing the shutter.

This pool was designed and built to be the focal point of the entire property. On this long narrow beachfront lot. We had the privilege of being able to work with the landscape architect to improve upon his aesthetic design to create a functional pool. While the house would be designed after around the pool. Upon walking into the front door, immediately you have a stunning view of the pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean with the Mokulua Islands in the background. We incorporated the materials used in both the pool and home to match seamlessly created a smooth transition from the indoor space to outdoor space. The walkway to the living room is actually floating stepping stones over the spa. The travertine on the deck is the same as the flooring in the house. The pool deck drain grout joint of the travertine, match the width and depth making the draining practically invisible. By working closely with the other contractors who were building the house, together we created a successful marriage of both outdoor and indoor spaces.

Said Angie, "Working with these clients was a privilege. Her home is a mid-century treasure. We designed a functional, minimalist kitchen with a nod to their taste and the home's period. One of the things the design really required was tall storage as her kitchen is a narrow galley. This was achieved by removing an existing desk area and replacing it with pantry cabinets with roll out shelves. We also added a deep drawer combination, one of my personal favorites, as it has so much versatility. The chocolate stain adds warmth and integrity to the design and space." Our team recently had the privilege of working with some of our favorite repeat clients who had just moved into their new home. Project Manager, Tony Cicchino, and Designer, Justina Auer, joined forces to work their magic and the results are truly remarkable! The clients wanted to transform and empty room into a multipurpose mudroom and laundry space. Featuring the main laundry machines and ample storage for all the garage overflow, the room is now a hub of organization. The base cabinets were cleverly designed to be built up a few inches to keep harmful items away from little ones and offer an excellent level space for folding and sorting clothes. Practicality meets style! The clients also left their previous home with fond memories of the built-ins we installed in their previous home, and they wanted a similar setup for their new game room. We happily obliged, crafting a perfect space for books, games and home décor. The window seat even includes drawers for additional storage – ideal for keeping the kids’ stuff in check!
