Beyond Shades had the privilege of dressing the windows in this 1880s Executive House in the Pullman Historic District occupied in 1900 by Thomas Dunbar, Superintendent of the Car Works. This home is open to the public a few times a year in Chicago’s new National Monument in Pullman on the South Side of Chicago.

A recent project that I was privileged and proud to be a part of was the renovation for the new Gennaro’s La Cucina Italian Restaurant in New Braunfels which I started in January and completed in April. The DiMeo family own 5 star Italian restaurants in Houston, Canyon Lake and now New Braunfels. In addition to their signature pasta, fish, and veal dishes, this new restaurant features certified Naples pizza baked in a wood burning pizza oven that was shipped to the restaurant from Gennaro’s home city of Naples. Hand painted murals of scenes from his native home provide a visually pleasing backdrop to the pizza preparation area and throughout the restaurant.

BKC had the privilege of designing a new display for Crystal Cabinets' showroom in Minnesota. This 'mountain chic' design features a variety of inset cabinet styles and wood species in rich, dark tones. At times, the most remarkable spaces emerge when we begin with a clean slate. In this particular project, we had the privilege to design a completely custom home, starting from scratch for our client. They simply entrusted us with a piece of land, and from that point forward, we handled everything. Our primary objective for this project was to craft an exceptional, contemporary, and practical dream home for a family of four. By creatively manipulating height variations at the front of the house, we conceived the standout element of the home: the impressive windows that showcase the bespoke steel spinal staircase.

When we completed it, one of Clyde’s trusted business partners—someone who’d seen him tackle countless unique projects—admitted he thought Clyde had lost his mind taking this one on. We’ve installed a 24-foot hickory slide in an elementary school library just east of Dallas, where kids absolutely love it. And here’s something that will make you smile: We built the longest wood slide ever for a children’s hospital in Springfield, Illinois. Have you ever heard a child beg to go to the doctor? That walnut slide stretches 45 feet long and 3 feet wide—spacious enough for three children to sit side-by-side or for an adult and child to slide together comfortably. We built it in one piece, filling an entire semi-trailer for transport. It lives in the hospital lobby, and no appointment is needed to experience it yourself. In Raleigh, North Carolina, we installed a 36-foot white oak slide in a custom home. The client loved it so much they ordered a second one—literally 15 minutes after we finished the installation. When Clyde returned to the office, there was already a check in the mailbox for slide number two. This 14,000-square-foot home now features 72 linear feet of curved white oak slide: one connecting the second floor to the main level, another linking the main floor to the finished basement. What a ride, indeed. Then there’s the curved stair-slide combination in Visalia, California—32 feet of knotty alder complemented by a hanging netted loft and climbing wall. Creative? Absolutely. Fun? We had the privilege of working on a lovely project for a young family at the Four Seasons Residences in downtown San Francisco. We wanted to inject the client’s love of their recent vacations abroad into their new cityscape space. They were inspired by raw materials, textures, woven colors, and oceanside views, so we worked those into the designs along the skyline. To bring their vision to life, we sourced incredibly unique pieces from bespoke and vintage SF showrooms and one-of-a-kind pieces we collected from abroad. As with everything we take on, we invited the opportunity to challenge our palette with new materials and the opportunity to experiment with scale juxtaposed against expansive views.

If you are familiar with our work, at Berry Design Build, you know that to us each project is more than just sticks and mortar. Each home, each client, each family we have the privilege to work with becomes part of our team. We believe in the value of excellence, the importance of commitment, and the significance of delivery. This renovation, along with many, is very close to our hearts because it’s one of the few instances where we get to exercise more than just the Design Build division of our company. This particular client had been working with Berry for many years to find that lifetime home. Through many viewings, agent caravans, and lots of offers later she found a house worth calling home. Although not perfectly to her personality (really what home is until you make it yours) she asked our Design Build division to come in and renovate some areas: including the kitchen, hall bathroom, master bathroom, and most other areas of the house; i.e. paint, hardwoods, and lighting.
