Ward Jewell, AIA was asked to design a comfortable one-story stone and wood pool house that was "barn-like" in keeping with the owner’s gentleman farmer concept. Thus, Mr. Jewell was inspired to create an elegant New England Stone Farm House designed to provide an exceptional environment for them to live, entertain, cook and swim in the large reflection lap pool.
Mr. Jewell envisioned a dramatic vaulted great room with hand selected 200 year old reclaimed wood beams and 10 foot tall pocketing French doors that would connect the house to a pool, deck areas, loggia and lush garden spaces, thus bringing the outdoors in. A large cupola “lantern clerestory” in the main vaulted ceiling casts a natural warm light over the graceful room below. The rustic walk-in stone fireplace provides a central focal point for the inviting living room lounge. Important to the functionality of the pool house are a chef’s working farm kitchen with open cabinetry, free-standing stove and a soapstone topped central island with bar height seating. Grey washed barn doors glide open to reveal a vaulted and beamed quilting room with full bath and a vaulted and beamed library/guest room with full bath that bookend the main space.
The private garden expanded and evolved over time. After purchasing two adjacent lots, the owners decided to redesign the garden and unify it by eliminating the tennis court, relocating the pool and building an inspired "barn". The concept behind the garden’s new design came from Thomas Jefferson’s home at Monticello with its wandering paths, orchards, and experimental vegetable garden. As a result this small organic farm, was born. Today the farm produces more than fifty varieties of vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers; many of which are rare and hard to find locally. The farm also grows a wide variety of fruits including plums, pluots, nectarines, apricots, apples, figs, peaches, guavas, avocados (Haas, Fuerte and Reed), olives, pomegranates, persimmons, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and ten different types of citrus. The remaining areas consist of drought-tolerant sweeps of rosemary, lavender, rockrose, and sage all of which attract butterflies and dueling hummingbirds.

Hideaway, Le Marche - San Marino, Italy
A historical Hideaway.
Image courtesy on the realtor, Leo Trippi.
A well-hidden place where the spirit finds its peace, nested between the Romagna, the Marches and Tuscany. Entering the gate, one leaves behind the pace of chaotic lives, and abandons itself to the joy of living of this ancient land. It is meant to be understood as a site of experience, where nature, culture, history and pleasure are elevated to the centre of things in order to finally rediscover it in oneself. A sort of “back to the simplicity”, aiming to dedicate oneself to observation and drawing from it valuable experiences for one’s life. Each of the three houses presents itself as an unexpected world in its own right, closed in on itself and yet a harmonious part of the whole, waiting to be enlivened by lively laughter, animated conversation and playfulness. This territory is a paradise for lovers of nature and the great outdoors. The sheer variety of places and landscapes enables visitors to take excursions on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. History and architecture enthusiasts can follow an itinerary of strongholds and castles dotted around the area. Lovers of gourmet food will discover a full range of traditional dishes and quality local produce all year round. The rich variety of museums enables exploration into the rural arts, medieval architecture, archaeological finds and contemporary art.

Charcoal Bluff natural thin stone veneer from the Quarry Mill creates an elegant front entrance and curb appeal on this stunning residential home. Charcoal Bluff real stone veneer is a natural limestone with shades of grey, gold and an occasional brown. The stone has a nice range of textures showcasing both the interior part of the stone and the natural bed. The grey pieces are called machine cut or split face and are produced using a 300 ton hydraulic press to break up the raw slabs of stone. The gold and brown pieces are the outer parts of the slabs of stone and were colored over thousands of years as water washed minerals over them. Charcoal Bluff is considered an ashlar pattern, however, there some larger rectangular castle rock pieces making this natural stone veneer great for projects of all sizes.

This beautiful home showcases the Quarry Mill's Royal Dusk natural thin stone veneer. Royal Dusk is a colorful blend of natural Wisconsin dolomitic limestone. The stone showcases the variations in colors, shapes, and textures that a single quarry can produce. Due to the stone all coming from the same quarry, the mix of pieces aesthetically flow well together forming an old-world look. The base of Royal Dusk is the linear neutral grey pieces that soften the wall. From there, irregular mosaic style pieces are added to mix in a variety of colors. Lastly, a small percentage of seamface pieces are added to create yet another element of color and texture.

The backyard can be found by walking down the steps from the covered porch. With a beautiful view from the balcony on the first floor, the area features extensive landscaping, a sitting area, and a gorgeous waterfall.

This is an example of a large traditional partial sun backyard mulch retaining wall landscape in Los Angeles.

Pennington real thin stone veneer from the Quarry Mill adds a layer of dimension with the brick and stucco on this beautiful home exterior. Pennington is a natural Wisconsin quarried dolomitic limestone. The stone is adored for its warm and bright colors including tans and soft reds. The thin veneer process starts with the slabs or sheets of limestone being split into smaller manageable pieces. The slabs are split with a large heavy-duty hydraulic press producing 300 tons of pressure. The pieces are then fed into the diamond blade saw where the thin veneer is cut. Pennington is unique in that the thin veneer is cut exclusively from the edges of the natural stone slabs. This stone is referred to as weathered edge, seamface, or simply rustic due to the unique stratifications in the stone.

An additional priority was to create an outdoor living room. A small addition to the rear of the house allowed us to create a beautiful, functional kitchen that directly opens to the new outdoor living room with large floor to ceiling windows & doors.
