2011 CHRYSALIS AWARD WINNER, ADDITION $100,000-$250,000
The owners of this small rambler in Arlington were tired of living in cramped quarters. The home’s kitchen was only 8’ x 11’ and they wanted to add a family room. Because the home is built on a slab, with no basement, the decision was made to expand out into the backyard.
Their contractor, Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, proposed an addition to back of the home, which would also be built on a slab to match the existing elevation. To make room, they had to remove the home’s original patio and then remove the 30’ wall running across the back of the home.
In their place, a new 16’x32’ addition was built with high cathedral ceilings, skylights and French doors topped with arched transoms. An archway and decorative columns were put in place to connect the old and new areas.
The new kitchen starts in the old kitchen area and wraps its way into the new addition, ending with a large two-tier island and prep sink topped with exotic granite. The main sink is in the corner of the old kitchen, easily accessible from both ends of the work area.
Beautiful custom-made cabinets include a wooden range hood and floor-to-ceiling pantry with wine rack. Stainless steel Energy Star appliances include a professional-quality gas cooktop and double wall ovens.
The kitchen flows into the new family room via an open concept design. A beautiful floor-to-ceiling natural stone fire place located in the middle of the back wall serves as a visual separation for the space. A round window is uniquely embedded in the stone work near the ceiling.
Wide plank oak flooring runs the length of the room, providing a uniform look throughout the space. Opposite the kitchen is the home’s new family room, with comfortable leather seating and plenty of windows to brighten up the space. A new stone patio off the kitchen provides the finishing touch to this remodel. In the end, the project provided the homeowners with the space they wanted and plenty of amenities to make family time or entertaining guests a pleasure.

For this kitchen remodeling project, our client’s vision was to open up the space and create a warm, light environment for their family. The large island with breakfast bar seating provides plenty of space for everyone to gather. The sleek lines, recessed panel cabinets, stainless appliances, elegant pendant lights, and neutral colors keep a clean look throughout while the sophisticated countertops add just the right amount of drama. Anyone would love to cook on the professional stove with integrated griddle and double oven. This design also features plenty of storage.

This kitchen had a haggard old look that the homeowners were eager to replace. Dark builder grade oak cabinetry, laminated countertops and heavy bulkheads were just a few of the old kitchen flaws. A multi-angle island with dysfunctional electric cook top made this kitchen difficult to work in and to get around.
Gourmet cooking and entertaining were two of the homeowners’ favorite pastimes. Making the space better for doing both became the goals of this remodeling project.
A new, large center island is now the focal point of this kitchen. While it provides plenty of storage, it also offers plenty of seating and works great as a buffet area when entertaining.
Rerouting the plumbing and ductwork eliminated the room’s bulkheads, allowing custom cabinets to be installed from floor to ceiling. The custom cabinets include lighted display cabinets on top for the homeowner’s prized pottery.
Professional-grade appliances including a gas cooktop, double wall ovens, a built-in microwave, a steamer, a warming drawer and a large refrigerator/freezer are all built into the perimeter walls. Custom cabinet inserts hide the refrigerator/freezer doors. A custom range hood is in place over the cooktop.
Contrasting exotic granite countertops and unique lighting fixtures bring the space to life. Milled wide plank hardwood floors complete the décor.

Nestled in the foothills of the Northeast Georgia Mountains, there is a lot to offer visitors looking for a small historic town with plenty of charm. Cornelia is one of the stops along the U.S. 441 Heritage Highway. Visitors to downtown can shop, eat and enjoy the historic and scenic attractions. Fenders Diner is a retro and fun dining experience. Overlooking Cornelia is the 54-foot Chenocetah Tower built in the 1930s by the WPA and used until 1971 for fire observation on a seasonal basis. The Tower and its surroundings, including one of the largest stands of Rhododendron minor in the nation and Russell Lake Recreation Area are now part of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The centerpiece of downtown is definitely the Big Red Apple monument, adjacent to the historic Railroad Depot. Elvis fans will love the Loudermilk Boarding House & Everything Elvis Museum.

This space has undergone an unbelievable transformation, you would not believe it if we showed you the before pictures! Email us if you'd like to see them.
This kitchen is as professional as an in-home kitchen comes, from the professional ceiling-height friend, to the spectacular eight burner range and double stacking ovens. This is the ultimate space for entertaining with a large island that offers comfortable seating for four people. Adjacent to the kitchen there is a butler pantry with plenty of storage for glassware, fine dishes and beverages. This allows the homeowners to serve their guest a cocktail without disturbing the hard-at-work chef.

This Victorian tiled hallway was one of the most beautiful Victorian floors I have ever had the pleasure to work on. With the wide range of patterns and colours they are available in, it seems no two Victorian tiled floors are exactly the same, and this uniqueness is part of what makes them so appealing to property owners.
Unfortunately, this floor had been poorly maintained over the years, even suffering from a few loose and missing tiles. There was a thick coating of dust and dirt soiling its appearance, and the property owner was understandably keen to remedy the situation. Having realised that everyday household cleaners are not likely to achieve great results, she asked me to carry out a full professional restoration, including making some repairs where necessary. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this property was situated in the town of Wyken, which is a few miles outside of Coventry city centre and in fact just down the road from where I live myself!
Before making a start on the cleaning process, it was first necessary to re-fix the small number of loose tiles and replace a single missing tile by the radiator. Fortunately, I’ve been working on these types of floors for some time and have built up a good collection of replacement Victorian tiles so I was able to find one that matched in nicely with the rest of the floor without too much problem.
To clean the tiles, I began by applying a layer of Tile Doctor Oxy-Gel directly into the floor with a small brush. This product is very similar to the popular Tile Doctor Pro Clean: both are strong alkaline cleaners, strippers and degreasers, with the main difference being that Oxy-Clean comes in a gel form, making it easier to control and therefore ideal for precise cleaning, or for application to vertical surfaces. Like Pro Clean and being an alkaline base it is suitable for use on all types of natural stone and tile. The Oxy-Gel was left to soak into the tiles for around ten minutes before being scrubbed in and then rinsed off carefully with water, I then used a wet vacuum to extract the now soiled cleaning solution off the floor.
The next step was to acid wash the floor using Tile Doctor Acid Gel; this served to break down alkaline mineral deposits inherent in the grout along with some excess grout that had been left on the untidily left on tile from installation. It is recommended not to use this product on acid-sensitive soon such as Marble and Limestone as it can cause irreparable etching but its fine on Victorian tiles as long as you don’t leave it on too long.
Finally, the floor was given a rinse with clean water to remove any trace of chemicals from the cleaning and to neutralise the area in preparation for sealing.
I left the floor for 48 hours to dry before returning to the property to seal the tiles. This allowed plenty of time for the floor to dry completely, which is important as any excess moisture can damage the ability of the sealer to protect against dirt and stains.
My choice of sealer for this floor was Tile Doctor High Shine; three coats in total were applied, providing – as the product name suggests – the high shine finish that the customer had requested. The sealer will provide durable surface protection going forward preventing dirt from becoming ingrained into the pores of the tile and ensuring it remains easy to clean and keeping its appearance for some time to come.
As a big fan of Victorian tiles, it was a great pleasure to restore this floor, and my customer was certainly pleased too. It’s amazing how far a little professional maintenance can go to improving the appearance of these fantastic types of floor.

This single-family home purchased by a young family in Sterling, Virginia needed a kitchen and living space remodel.
This family did not want separate kitchen and family spaces separated by a bearing wall.
Our expert team got to work redesigning the spaces. By removing the wall and placing a large-scale island in place of the previous island, both kitchen and living spaces were opened up. The refrigerator and other tall elements were relocated to a north wall and covered with closet doors.
By eliminating a window on one side, we enlarged the west wall of the kitchen to allow for new features such as a large-scale gas stove, custom-made metal hood surrounded by floating shelves, a full backsplash of granite covers up this entire wall.
The previous north wall had a large-sized refrigerator and freezer, built-in coffee maker, microwave along with plenty of pantry and storage space.
The new island sitting at the center of the kitchen, includes a farmhouse sink, dishwasher, and other amenities with plenty of seating.
A new wood floor was installed across the entire space with a new stain color complimenting the island cabinet finish.
The family room closet was converted to feature a wet bar area including a beverage center with display glass cabinets, a wine cooler, ice maker and decorated with waterjet backsplash & sconce lights.
The high-end professional appliances and unique contrast between the stone top and cabinet finish make this kitchen remodel an award-winning project.

Their contractor, Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, proposed an addition to back of the home, which would also be built on a slab to match the existing elevation. To make room, they had to remove the home’s original patio and then remove the 30’ wall running across the back of the home.

The Home
The Polaris is about coming home. The homeowner is a United States Air Force Academy alumnus and his family, who found the perfect location to overlook his alma mater. This home is built for today and tomorrow, with elevator and ADA access.
As you enter, sweeping Air Force Academy views greet you. The living area boasts a stunning fireplace wall, a crush-worthy kitchen and pantry and a lovely dining area. The mud room flows seamlessly into the master closet and kitchen. Along the way, a stop at the wine fridge is a nice perk. The office and second bedroom offer plenty of space for work and guests. With a gorgeous fire tray, grill area, infrared heaters and hot tub, the huge deck is a year-round destination.
The basement is built to play, but the homeowners can lock off part of it if they wish. The exercise room is decked out in Air Force
Academy blue flooring. The fun game room is next to the wet bar and walk-out rec room, with a powder room nearby. Two bedrooms
share a bathroom and have their own laundry room. A vault room under the front porch adds additional storage.
