On a quiet cul-de-sac not too far from downtown San Luis Obispo lies the contemporary craftsman styled Clausen Residence. The challenges that accompanied this project were what, in the end, made it so interesting. The buildable area of the site is very small due to the fact that almost half of the property is occupied by a biological open space easement, established to protect the creek that runs behind the lot. In addition to this, the site is incredibly steep, which lent itself well to a stair stepped 3-story floor plan. Strict height restrictions set by the local jurisdiction governed the decision to bury the garage in the hill, and set the main living space on top of it, accompanied by the children’s bedrooms and game room further back on the site. The 3rd floor is occupied fully by the master suite, which looks down on the back yard below. Off of the great room is a vast deck, with built in barbecue, fire place and heaters, ideal for outdoor entertaining year round.
The house, adorned in lap siding and true craftsman details is flanked by gorgeous oak trees and the creek beyond.

This sunny living room area is nestled in a corner, framed by huge windows which open wide to let in brisk sea breezes. Linen slipcovers protect the furniture and add to the laid-back beach house charm. A distressed round white cocktail table and a weathered console table behind the sofa complete the look.
Color, playfulness and whimsy combine to create a casual, welcoming summer retreat for empty nesters who still tell us that when they walk through the door they say “Aaahhh” to themselves. WKD took one large room and created 4 different zones: an airy and bright living room area for conversation, a cozy family room area for reading, a dining room area for family meals, and a game table area for games.
The clients have hired us back for phase 2 - giving the kitchen a complete overhaul.

This completed home boasts a HERS index of zero. The most noteworthy energy efficient features are the air tightness of the thermal shell and the use of solar energy. Using a 17.1 kW Photovoltaic system and Tesla Powerwall, the solar system provides approximately 100% of the annual electrical energy needs. In addition, an innovative “pod” floor plan design allows each separate pod to be closed off for minimal HVAC use when unused.

Foam Floor Mats 5/8 Premium
-- "These 5/8 Premium mats are great. I used them to convert our vacation home garage to a ''Boys Club'' for our 5 grandsons. They added protection for play activities and insulation from the concrete floor. We had a water leak and they were so easy to take up and dry out the floor. I even used them to line the foundation perimeter instead of painting it. The pictures say it all. Look how great the ''Great Mats'' made our Game room look!"

This is a quintessential Colorado home. Massive raw steel beams are juxtaposed with refined fumed larch cabinetry, heavy lashed timber is foiled by the lightness of window walls. Monolithic stone walls lay perpendicular to a curved ridge, organizing the home as they converge in the protected entry courtyard. From here, the walls radiate outwards, both dividing and capturing spacious interior volumes and distinct views to the forest, the meadow, and Rocky Mountain peaks. An exploration in craftmanship and artisanal masonry & timber work, the honesty of organic materials grounds and warms expansive interior spaces.

Susan Currie Design planned a space to use for fun gatherings to watch sports and play games. Bright yellow and grey pillows along with the flame stitched rug add interest to the grey upholstery used on the new sectional. The leather ottoman with nailheads gives the family a place to put up their feet or the added seating they need for parties. An industrial table with stools compliments the metal media cabinet below the television.

This Dallas home originally built in 1958 had a one car garage that was filling up! The homeowners desired to turn that garage into living space for their family and build a new garage on their lot that would give them the storage and car protection. We came up with a plan and found materials that matched their home and the new structure looks as if it was original to the home. We built a new 2 car garage with plenty of space for extra storage and large attic above. A separate door entrance makes for easy entry to the new garage. A large timber bar that runs down the length of the outside wall is perfect for entertaining large groups of guests. We then renovated the old garage and turned it into an awesome living room. It features hardwood floors, large windows and French doors to the patio with an additional door to the driveway. We used reclaimed brick to fill in the outside of the home where the previous garage door was for an exact match! Our clients are thrilled with how this new garage and new living room enhance their home! This friendly family room area has an 'under the sea' feeling, with blue painted beadboard as a backdrop for fun aquatic decor. Linen slipcovers protect the furniture and add to the laid-back beach house charm.

Pine AuraLast Wood Picture Windows with Gothic grilles (Siteline EX) are painted dark to match this Old World classic. Energy efficient, Low-E glass provides protection against UV fading.

The benefits of living in sunny Florida are not needing to protect your car from the harsh elements of winter. For this garage makeover, we transformed a three-car garage into 3 unique areas for gathering with friends and lounging: a movie, card and pool table area. We added a fun removable wallpaper on the far wall, giving the room some fun character. The long wall of velvet curtains is not only for not feeling like you're in a garage, but they were added for acoustics and to allow the garage doors to still open as needed. Lots of fun to be had here!

The back of this house was reconfigured to create one large open space. The old kitchen was relocated from the center of the space to the far end, switching locations with the dining room. Now there's plenty of room for friends & family to hang out at the island, lounge area or dining table. Very popular for game night!
