The two bedroom bungalows were designed to sit comfortably within the surrounding development using materials of the same colour and type but with the addition of contemporary detailing. Elegant proportions and vaulted ceilings invite light into the south facing living spaces whilst communal gardens foster a sense of community and encourage social interactions. The project was completed in September 2017.

The present project, with its clear and simple forms, looks for the interaction with the rural environment and the contact with the surrounding buildings. The simplicity and architectural dialogue between form and function are the theme for inside and outside. Kitchen and dining area are facing each other. The isle leads to a made-to-measure corner bench that stretches under the wide windows along the entire length of the house and connects to the kitchen across the corner. Above the tall units with their integrated appliances, the window continues as a narrow band. The white high gloss acrylic surface of the kitchen fronts forms a decorative contrast to the wood of the floor and bench. White lacquered recessed handles provide a tranquil, two-dimensional effect.

The DACC Fluoroscopy Suite provides students with a space to observe and work with modern medical imagery equipment. Two spaces within the existing suite were modified to include an equipment room and a student observation room. The equipment room featured a RADPRO Solegra R/F Table which required the installation of lead lined gypsum board, a lead lined door and a lead lined window for viewing. The equipment control console was installed within the student observation room for interactive teaching. Other improvements to the space included electrical modifications, new lighting, new flooring and new wall finishes.

Opening up the walls creates a welcomed interaction with the dining and living rooms, while taking advantage of the natural light. This provides an airy and cozy, family-friendly ambiance. This beautiful home is an example of what can be achieved on a small lot. Interactive Construction was able to provide these homeowners with a Passive House that fit perfectly into their heritage neighbourhood, onto their narrow lot, and with their personalities. There are huge energy savings built into the design of this home. In keeping with Passive House principles, the house is insulated everywhere to minimize heat loss meaning this house doesn’t require a conventional heat source. There is an extremely efficient Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) system that quietly manages airflow throughout the building and takes the heat from showers and cooking before expelling cool, filtered air. Triple glazed windows cut down on heat loss and are almost all openable to aid in cooling instead of a costly air conditioner. Environmental considerations in this build go beyond energy savings. The decision to use prefabricated wall panels and roof trusses to cut down on waste and aid in site storage of lumber. This house’s innovation comes from it being a modern design passive house that it somehow fits very well in a neighbourhood filled with heritage houses. We managed to squeeze a lot of house onto a postage sized lot and still have it feel roomy inside and in the yard. And check out those funky stairs!
