Our clients are from Indiana but have been coming to Northern Michigan for about 50 years. They originally learned about our firm through an article in Traverse the Magazine where our owner, Stephanie Baldwin, provided information about working with a design firm. They then toured a couple of our projects during a parade of homes and decided they were ready to hire for their family's cottage needs. They already owned a cottage on Walloon Lake, but were ready to design and build a new cottage in its place for more room for their family. They wanted low maintenance materials and a timeless, Northern Michigan lake cottage style. The ultimate design was completed to take advantage of the lake views and access as well as creating plenty of room for family to stay while considering aging in place. The end result is a stunning home that will be enjoyed by the entire family for generations to come.

Embracing the challenge of grounding this open, light-filled space, our Boulder studio focused on comfort, ease, and high design. The built-in lounge is flanked by storage cabinets for puzzles and games for this client who loves having people over. The high-back Living Divani sofa is paired with U-Turn Benson chairs and a "Rabari" rug from Nanimarquina for casual gatherings. The throw pillows are a perfect mix of Norwegian tapestry fabric and contemporary patterns. In the child's bedroom, we added an organically shaped Vitra Living Tower, which also provides a cozy reading niche. Bold Marimekko fabric colorfully complements more traditional detailing and creates a contrast between old and new. We loved collaborating with our client on an eclectic bedroom, where everything is collected and combined in a way that allows distinctive pieces to work together. A custom walnut bed supports the owner's tatami mattress. Vintage rugs ground the space and pair well with a vintage Scandinavian chair and dresser. Combining unexpected objects is one of our favorite ways to add liveliness and personality to a space. In the little guest bedroom, our client (a creative and passionate collector) was the inspiration behind an energetic and eclectic mix. Similarly, turning one of our client's favorite old sweaters into pillow covers and popping a Native American rug on the wall helped pull the space together. Slightly eclectic and invitingly cozy, the twin guestroom beckons for settling in to read, nap or daydream. Our clients came to us for a bathroom renovation with the addition of a walk-in shower. To keep this bathroom feeling open, we used glass shower walls and doors. Along with that, we wanted to make sure the shower provided our clients with a spa-like experience, so we installed all new plumbing lines in the basement and configured the shower so both the rain-shower and the hand-held body spray could be utilized at the same time. The dark natural tones of the mosaic are complemented by the rest of the lighter wall and floor tile as well as the dark wood we selected for the vanity set. Stone colors are available in dark gray to blueish or greenish gray with light or dramatic veining. Over a period of time as soapstone ages it achieves a beautiful patina. When treated with mineral oil the stone will darken. Soapstone is an ideal kitchen countertop choice because it never has to been sealed and has high heat resistant properties. Soapstone, although soft, is a very dense (non-porous) stone. Most people are surprised to learn it is more dense than marble, slate, limestone and even granite. Since soapstone is impenetrable and it will not stain. No liquid will permeate its surface. This is why through the years soapstone is widely used in chemistry lab countertops and acid rooms. If you love the dark beauty of granite and the light veining of marble, consider soapstone instead. It's durable, relatively low-maintenance, and has a lovely, old-world feel.

We are thrilled to share with you our latest kitchen design project for a client who wanted a larger and more open space for their culinary pursuits. Our team worked closely with the client to develop a bespoke design plan that would fulfill their vision for a more innovative and functional kitchen. One of our major objectives was to create an open-concept floor plan by removing the kitchen and dining room walls. This immediately created a more spacious feel to the room and encouraged greater social interaction between family members. The result is a kitchen that feels both contemporary and inviting. Our client was particular about the custom look he wanted for his cabinetry. We listened to his specifications and delivered on our promise of a unique cabinet color that complemented the rest of the kitchen design. The effect is striking, and the cabinets now serve as a focal point of the room. To ensure the kitchen was fully equipped with the latest and most advanced appliances, we specified Wolf appliances. These state-of-the-art appliances are renowned for their functionality, durability, and stylish design. Our client now has access to the latest cooking technology, making meal preparation easier and more enjoyable than ever before! In order to accentuate the beauty of the kitchen space, we installed teardrop recessed lights and pendant lights above the sink and the peninsula. These elegant fixtures not only provide ample lighting, but also add a touch of sophistication to the kitchen. Rather than refinishing the floors, we opted to install new prefinished wood floors in an espresso color. This choice adds depth to the room and creates a cozy ambiance ideal for spending time with loved ones. Overall, our team is thrilled with the outcome of this project. We were able to achieve our client's vision of a larger and more open kitchen while maintaining a custom look personalized to the client's tastes. Cramped kitchen be gone! That was the project motto and top priority. The goal was to transform the current layout from multiple smaller spaces into a connected whole that would activate the main level for our clients, a young family of four. The biggest obstacle was the wall dividing the kitchen and the dining room. Removing this wall was central to opening up and integrating the main living spaces, but the existing ductwork that ran right through the center of the wall posed a design challenge, er design opportunity. The resulting design solution features a central pantry that captures the ductwork and provides valuable storage- especially when compared to the original kitchen's 18" wide pantry cabinet. The pantry also anchors the kitchen island and serves as a visual separation of space between the kitchen and homework area. Through our design development process, we learned the formal living room was of no service to their lifestyle and therefore space they rarely spent time in. With that in mind, we proposed to eliminate the unused living room and make it the new dining room. Relocating the dining room to this space inherently felt right given the soaring ceiling and ample room for holiday dinners and celebrations. The new dining room was spacious enough for us to incorporate a conversational seating area in the warm, south-facing window alcove. Now what to do with the old dining room?! To answer that question we took inspiration from our clients' shared profession in education and developed a craft area/homework station for both of their boys. The semi-custom cabinetry of the desk area carries over to the adjacent wall and forms window bench base with storage that we topped with butcher block for a touch of warmth. While the boys are young, the bench drawers are the perfect place for a stash of toys close to the kitchen. The kitchen begins just beyond the window seat with their refrigerator enclosure. Opposite the refrigerator is the new pantry with twenty linear feet of shelving and space for brooms and a stick vacuum. Extending from the backside of the pantry the kitchen island design incorporates counter seating on the family room side and a cabinetry configuration on the kitchen side with drawer storage, a trashcan center, farmhouse sink, and dishwasher. We took careful time in design and execution to align the range and sink because while it might seem like a small detail, it plays an important role in supporting the symmetrical configuration of the back wall of the kitchen. The rear wall design utilizes an appliance garage mirrors the visual impact of the refrigerator enclosure and helps keep the now open kitchen tidy. Between the appliance garage and refrigerator enclosure is the cooking zone with 30" of cabinetry and work surface on either side of the range, a chimney style vent hood, and a bold graphic tile backsplash. The backsplash is just one of many personal touches we added to the space to reflect our client's modern eclectic style and love of color. Swooping lines of the mid-mod style barstools compliment the pendants and backsplash pattern. A pop of vibrant green on the frame of the pantry door adds a fresh wash of color to an otherwise neutral space. The big show stopper is the custom charcoal gray and copper chevron wall installation in the dining room. This was an idea our clients softly suggested, and we excitedly embraced the opportunity. It is also a kickass solution to the head-scratching design dilemma of how to fill a large and lofty wall. We are so grateful to bring this design to life for our clients and now dear friends.

In addition to the logistical issues of working in a high-rise, some of Deuble’s biggest challenges came with incorporating appliances, such as properly venting the 48-inch pro-style range. To integrate several large appliances into the relatively small space while maintaining a seamless appearance, she included custom panels over the refrigerator, dishwasher drawers, and refrigerator drawers. She then housed a microwave and a TV in identical wall cabinets. Since the kitchen opens to the living room, Deuble needed to design it as a space to be shown, not hidden. To achieve this, custom details were included throughout, such as a table-style peninsula with decorative legs, three-stage crown molding, mullion doors, an entertainment center with wine and liquor storage, and a desk designed to match the cabinetry. Well-thoughtout details such as the push-to-open hardware on the peninsula’s full-height cabinet doors provided the finishing touches to this showcase-worthy space.
