With tall ceilings, an impressive stone fireplace, and original wooden beams, this home in Glen Ellyn, a suburb of Chicago, had plenty of character and a style that felt coastal. Six months into the purchase of their home, this family of six contacted Alessia Loffredo and Sarah Coscarelli of ReDesign Home to complete their home’s renovation by tackling the kitchen. “Surprisingly, the kitchen was the one room in the home that lacked interest due to a challenging layout between kitchen, butler pantry, and pantry,” the designer shared, “the cabinetry was not proportionate to the space’s large footprint and height. None of the house’s architectural features were introduced into kitchen aside from the wooden beams crossing the room throughout the main floor including the family room.” She moved the pantry door closer to the prepping and cooking area while converting the former butler pantry a bar. Alessia designed an oversized hood around the stove to counterbalance the impressive stone fireplace located at the opposite side of the living space. She then wanted to include functionality, using Trim Tech‘s cabinets, featuring a pair with retractable doors, for easy access, flanking both sides of the range. The client had asked for an island that would be larger than the original in their space – Alessia made the smart decision that if it was to increase in size it shouldn’t increase in visual weight and designed it with legs, raised above the floor. Made out of steel, by Wayward Machine Co., along with a marble-replicating porcelain countertop, it was designed with durability in mind to withstand anything that her client’s four children would throw at it. Finally, she added finishing touches to the space in the form of brass hardware from Katonah Chicago, with similar toned wall lighting and faucet.

The sliding closet doors were damaged when the property was purchased. With the intention of it being a vacation rental, the decision was made to forgo replacing the doors and create another seating area for couples who may be traveling together and wanting more privacy, instead. We painted the closet a dark gray, added a hanging sconce that we'd repurposed from a hurricane, and introduced two printed club chairs to create a private seating area. Because this room gets so much light, we added a lot of drought tolerant plants that could handle not having daily care.

We worked with Astrid Newton Rush Interiors on this kitchen design. The client origiinally planed to keep the exsisting kitchen. However once they started to purchase all new furnishings it became evident they needed to update the kitchen. She kept the clients needs in the forefront of all her design decisions. The owners looked to her to assist them in keeping consistancy in all the rooms of their home and creating a beautiful focal point in the main kitchen.

Believe it or not, this award-winning home began as a speculative project. Typically speculative projects involve a rather generic design that would appeal to many in a style that might be loved by the masses. But the project’s developer loved modern architecture and his personal residence was the first project designed by architect C.P. Drewett when Drewett Works launched in 2001. Together, the architect and developer envisioned a fictitious art collector who would one day purchase this stunning piece of desert modern architecture to showcase their magnificent collection. The primary views from the site were southwest. Therefore, protecting the interior spaces from the southwest sun while making the primary views available was the greatest challenge. The views were very calculated and carefully managed. Every room needed to not only capture the vistas of the surrounding desert, but also provide viewing spaces for the potential collection to be housed within its walls. The core of the material palette is utilitarian including exposed masonry and locally quarried cantera stone. An organic nature was added to the project through millwork selections including walnut and red gum veneers. The eventual owners saw immediately that this could indeed become a home for them as well as their magnificent collection, of which pieces are loaned out to museums around the world. Their decision to purchase the home was based on the dimensions of one particular wall in the dining room which was EXACTLY large enough for one particular painting not yet displayed due to its size. This project involved renovating and decorating a co-op in Center City, Philadelphia. It was a one-bedroom/one bath apartment with a kitchen at 700 s.f. We decided to give it a Mid Century Modern feeling in the living/dining area. The client was not involved in any of the decision-making, but did give us a few requests. We put in the Brazilian hardwood througout the living/dining room/kitchen. All the fixtures, paint, and window treatments are new. We purchased the new living room sofa and blue swivel chair. The wing chair (owner's) was re-upholstered. Since this was a high-low project, we purchased the hard pieces on Craig's list and at auction. The windows in this room face South, so we put in taupe/white solar blinds and softened them with creamy custom made chantung silk panels. The sofa was done in a tweedy orange color and is flanked by two floor lamps of chrome and lucite.

The prior owner lived there from 1940s until she died at age of 98! The old home had loads of character and charm but was in pretty bad condition and desperately needed updates. The clients purchased the home a few years ago and did some work before they moved in (roof, HVAC, electrical) but decided to live in the house for a 6 months or so before embarking on the next renovation phase. I had worked with the clients previously on the wife's office space and a few projects in a previous home including the nursery design for their first child so they reached out when they were ready to start thinking about the interior renovations. The goal was to respect and enhance the historic architecture of the home but make the spaces more functional for this couple with two small kids. Clients were open to color and some more bold/unexpected design choices. The design style is updated traditional with some eclectic elements. An early design decision was to incorporate a dark colored french range which would be the focal point of the kitchen and to do dark high gloss lacquered cabinets in the adjacent coffee bar, and we ultimately went with dark green.

By expanding the kitchen we were able to reconfigure the layout and create additional prep space and a more functional location for the range.
