Hammer & Hand, Alice Design, and Domestic Arts worked together to transform an unfinished basement into a multifunctional guest bedroom and family room. The finished basement now serves many purposes: family entertainment room, guest bedroom, extra storage, laundry room, and mudroom when entering from the carport. When not in use by guests, a Murphy bed (built by Big Branch Woodworking) is easily stored away to make extra space. Photography by Jeff Amram.

Custom drapery from Signature Series paired with light filtering blinds provide a fresh take on window coverings to control the sun's glare. The lively accent wall color is repeated in drapery, rug and custom pillows to complete the look.

Sunroom - cottage sunroom idea in New York with a standard ceiling

Multi-purpose room designed to have everything AND the kitchen sink! Space planned very carefully to include all of the client's needs. This bonus room was previously used primarily for laundry and storage. A custom walnut desk with beautiful quartz countertops was designed to maximize leg room and function. Frosted glass cabinet doors hide office supplies. A huge 6 foot barn door was custom designed to hide the washer and dryer when not in use. Door by Rustica Hardware. White Shaker cabinetry for storage and a beautiful white fireclay sink with a classic chrome bridge faucet finishes off the laundry side. Client wanted a space for an extra refrigerator, we also housed a hidden ironing board in the long cabinet adjacent to the fridge.

Basement - large transitional walk-out medium tone wood floor and beige floor basement idea in Chicago with gray walls and no fireplace

This 3200 square foot home features a maintenance free exterior of LP Smartside, corrugated aluminum roofing, and native prairie landscaping. The design of the structure is intended to mimic the architectural lines of classic farm buildings. The outdoor living areas are as important to this home as the interior spaces; covered and exposed porches, field stone patios and an enclosed screen porch all offer expansive views of the surrounding meadow and tree line.
The home’s interior combines rustic timbers and soaring spaces which would have traditionally been reserved for the barn and outbuildings, with classic finishes customarily found in the family homestead. Walls of windows and cathedral ceilings invite the outdoors in. Locally sourced reclaimed posts and beams, wide plank white oak flooring and a Door County fieldstone fireplace juxtapose with classic white cabinetry and millwork, tongue and groove wainscoting and a color palate of softened paint hues, tiles and fabrics to create a completely unique Door County homestead.

Note the large scale tile juxtaposed against the quilt style tile on the oven wall. This large and simple toned grey field allows the other area to stand out, yet this window wall detail also serves a purpose of showing how every area can be unique, but not glaring in contrast.
