Another view of refaced kitchen. We added a functional vent hood. All wood used in the refacing process was real solid cherry. Our process uses 1/4" thick milled hardwood facings on the cabinet fronts. these eliminate the need for corner moldings. In this job the customer chose mitered doors and matching drawer fronts and had us apply a dark clean glaze on top of the custom stain she chose.

Planning a Modern Kitchen Remodel
Every successful kitchen remodeling project begins with careful planning. Before construction starts, it is important to evaluate the existing layout, cabinet storage, lighting conditions, appliance placement, and how the kitchen connects to surrounding living spaces.
For this project, the primary design goals included:
Creating a brighter open concept kitchen
Improving functionality and circulation
Increasing pantry and cabinet storage
Maximizing natural light with skylight integration
Creating a clean and timeless design aesthetic
The final layout centered around a large kitchen island that functions as both a workspace and gathering area. Open concept kitchens remain highly desirable because they improve communication between living areas while helping the home feel larger and more connected.
Importance of Natural Light
Natural lighting plays a major role in modern kitchen remodeling. In this renovation, the skylight significantly improved brightness throughout the space and helped create a softer, more inviting atmosphere during the day.
Combined with recessed lighting and pendant fixtures above the island, the layered lighting design provides both functional task lighting and balanced ambient illumination.
Construction and Material Selection
Kitchen remodeling projects require coordination between multiple construction trades including demolition, framing, electrical, plumbing, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, countertops, and finish carpentry.
Bi-Color Kitchen Remodel Design
One of the standout features of this project is the bi-color kitchen remodel design. The warm natural wood island creates contrast against the surrounding white cabinetry while maintaining a clean and balanced appearance.
This approach helps:
Add visual depth to the kitchen
Create separation between functional zones
Prevent the space from feeling overly monochromatic
Introduce warmth into modern kitchen designs
The oversized island also provides additional storage, countertop workspace, and seating opportunities for everyday use and entertaining.
Countertops, Cabinetry, and Finishes
The kitchen includes:
Quartz countertops with waterfall-style edges
Custom shaker-style cabinetry
Stainless steel appliances
Modern pendant lighting
Wide plank engineered hardwood flooring
Full-height backsplash surfaces
The neutral color palette was selected to create a timeless appearance while allowing flexibility for future décor and furniture changes.
Pantry Kitchen Renovation
Storage planning is one of the most important aspects of kitchen remodeling. The pantry kitchen renovation focused on improving organization and accessibility while maximizing usable storage space.
Modern pantry systems help homeowners:
Reduce countertop clutter
Improve kitchen organization
Store small appliances more efficiently
Increase long-term functionality
Thoughtful storage design can significantly improve the daily usability of a kitchen without increasing square footage.
Real Estate Value and Long-Term Benefits
Kitchen remodeling remains one of the highest-value residential renovation projects in the Bay Area real estate market. A professionally designed open concept kitchen can improve buyer perception, increase property appeal, and modernize outdated layouts.
Features such as large islands, skylights, pantry storage, and bi-color cabinetry continue to remain highly desirable among homeowners and future buyers alike.
Common Kitchen Remodeling Mistakes
Some common mistakes homeowners should avoid include:
Insufficient lighting design
Poor circulation planning
Limited storage solutions
Choosing low-durability materials
Overcrowded layouts
Inadequate electrical preparation
Working with experienced remodeling professionals can help avoid costly design and construction issues later in the process.
Common Questions
How long does a kitchen remodel usually take?
Most kitchen remodeling projects take approximately 6–12 weeks depending on the project scope, inspections, material lead times, and structural modifications.
Do kitchen remodels require permits?
Permits are often required when plumbing, electrical, structural, or layout changes are involved. Requirements vary depending on the city and scope of work.
What is a bi-color kitchen remodel?
A bi-color kitchen remodel uses two cabinet finishes or tones to create visual contrast and a more customized design appearance.
Does an open concept kitchen increase home value?
Open concept kitchens are highly desirable because they improve functionality, natural lighting, and overall flow throughout the home.
Conclusion
A well-planned kitchen remodeling project combines thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship, and durable materials to create a space that is both functional and visually appealing. Features such as skylight integration, open concept layouts, pantry kitchen renovations, and bi-color cabinetry continue to remain popular among Bay Area homeowners seeking timeless and practical kitchen designs.
Careful planning, professional coordination, and attention to detail are essential for creating a kitchen that performs well aesthetically and functionally for many years.

This stunning retaining wall and walk-out basement showcase the Quarry Mill's Cheyenne real granite cobblestone thin veneer. Cheyenne is a natural granite thin stone veneer in earthy browns and greys. The stone is cut from natural granite that is collected rather than quarried in the traditional sense. Cheyenne is a true fieldstone in that it is the top layer of the bedrock; the pieces broke off over time and worked their way through the topsoil. This process naturally stained the black and white stone to the brown and tan pieces we see today. To add variation, we split some of the pieces to show the interior colors. The split pieces technically fall into more of the mosaic style but as a whole Cheyenne is a cobblestone.

The Quarry Mill's Smokey Gold natural low height ledgestone thin stone veneer creates stunning and stately pillars and wainscoting on this home's front entrance. Smokey Gold real stone veneer is a natural low height ledgestone. The stone itself is a natural quartzite and the thin veneer is cut from the edges of the sheets of stone as they are quarried. The process of sawing the raw stone into natural thin veneer turns the diamond blade bright red due to heat that is generated and the density of the natural quartzite. Smokey gold is predominantly gold but also showcases some grey and white pieces giving it a subtle range of color. The textures are mainly smooth with some rippling. Although all of our natural stone veneers are high density, low water absorption, and approved for use in all climates, Smokey Gold is exceptionally hard and sturdy.

This residential home uses the Quarry Mill's Cambrian Creek thin stone veneer to complement the grill and pool area. Cambrian Creek is a classic real stone veneer cut into the dimensional (sawn-height) style. The stone is natural dolomitic limestone with the timeless colors of gold, buff and the occasional grey. The quarrying and production process for Cambrian Creek is quite impressive. The stone is cut from the ground in blocks roughly the size of a car. Then, the blocks get sawn or sliced as it is called into large sheets of stone in heights of 2.25”, 5” and 7.75”. The sheets are fed into the splitter where the hydraulic press breaks them every four inches. At this stage, the stone is considered building stone or full veneer. Finally, the pieces are run through the saw to create the beautiful thin veneer.

This stunning outdoor kitchen and wood-burning fireplace are made with London real thin stone veneer from the Quarry Mill. London is one of our more popular natural thin stone veneers with its undeniable rustic beauty. The thin stone is cut from natural hand-picked fieldstone. After the fieldstone is collected from centuries-old fence lines, it is squared up with the hydraulic presses. This process of chopping the naturally irregular fieldstone into the more formal squares and rectangles adds another element of visual appeal. London has heavy variations in the colors but primarily consists of a blend of earth tones. This color variation comes from the individual pieces of stone and where they were located within the pile on the fence line.

Pennington real thin stone veneer from the Quarry Mill adds a layer of dimension with the brick and stucco on this beautiful home exterior. Pennington is a natural Wisconsin quarried dolomitic limestone. The stone is adored for its warm and bright colors including tans and soft reds. The thin veneer process starts with the slabs or sheets of limestone being split into smaller manageable pieces. The slabs are split with a large heavy-duty hydraulic press producing 300 tons of pressure. The pieces are then fed into the diamond blade saw where the thin veneer is cut. Pennington is unique in that the thin veneer is cut exclusively from the edges of the natural stone slabs. This stone is referred to as weathered edge, seamface, or simply rustic due to the unique stratifications in the stone.

Custom Home Built for Real Life
Our clients came to us with a clear vision: a home that could adapt to their lifestyle and growing family. They needed a home built with intention, designed with the future in mind, and built around the routines they loved and the people they loved more.
Open-Concept Living With Hosting in Mind
Our clients hosted often and lived actively, so the main level had to be flexible for all of life’s moments. The goal was a space that felt grand without losing its warmth.
Cooking together as a family mattered to our clients – the Wolf range, farmhouse sink, integrated appliances, and large island gave them a kitchen that flowed effortlessly while looking beautiful. This space also served as the bridge between other parts of the main level so that they would stay in view of the next. This created the perfect environment for gathering where everyone had their own spot without ever feeling apart from the whole group.
For the living room, our clients wanted space that felt open without losing its warmth. Soaring ceilings created that sense of scale, while warm tones and materials, like the wood coffered ceiling and fireplace wall, kept it grounded. That same warmth carried outside, where an outdoor lounge with a fireplace and dining area made sure guests felt welcomed the moment they stepped out.
A Backyard Built for Real Rest
Every corner of the backyard was designed with one goal: to be the ultimate outdoor retreat. The elevated, white-brick-framed pool and integrated spa hot tub gave them a place to truly exhale. As the sun set, the fire pit lounge next to the pool became the hangout spot when they hosted their youth groups and family gatherings.
Room to Grow
With kids in the house, “custom” had to also mean flexible. Our clients had 2 young sons and needed their rooms to grow with them through the years. The two bedrooms and a full bath sat beside a loft that served as both their hangout-and-homework spot. The guest suite sat on the same level where a four-poster bed, floor-to-ceiling wood-look tile, and a frameless glass shower welcomed their guests from day one.
A Retreat That’s Actually Theirs
Between hosting and raising kids, this couple needed a suite that felt like a true escape. The wood-planked tray ceiling and French doors grounded the room in warmth the moment you walked in, while the ensuite bathroom carried a spa-like feeling with a freestanding soaking tub, custom double vanity, and a glass-enclosed shower.
This Is What Approachable Luxury Looks Like
The approachable luxury experience meant starting with conversations about how they wanted their space to live with them – how they hosted, how their kids played, how they wanted to feel walking through their own front door, and how we took their goals and experience and used it as the foundation of every decision that was made from start to finish. We wanted our clients to feel taken care of through the process and, most importantly, feel heard.

This beautiful front porch with a stone wall showcases a custom blend of the Quarry Mill's Castle Ridge and Baltic Hills natural thin stone veneer. Castle Ridge is a quintessential natural thin cut limestone veneer. The warm and comforting golds, tans, and light yellows showcase classic limestone colors. Castle Ridge is cut from Wisconsin quarried dolomitic limestone which is world-renowned for its durability. The stone is known for its high tensile strength and low water absorption with the stone waste being crushed into DOT-approved gravel. Castle Ridge has been split with a hydraulic press on all four sides to create the rectangular shapes. This chopping or breaking process allows the stone to retain a rustic or natural look compared to a sawed edge. Castle Ridge’s large pieces are great for large-scale exteriors and install quickly.
