Deep Drawers Allow for Planty of Storage - Our clients wanted to remodel their kitchen so that the prep, cooking, clean up and dining areas would blend well and not have too much of a kitchen feel. They asked for a sophisticated look with some classic details and a few contemporary flairs. The result was a reorganized layout (and remodel of the adjacent powder room) that maintained all the beautiful sunlight from their deck windows, but create two separate but complimentary areas for cooking and dining. The refrigerator and pantry are housed in a furniture-like unit creating a hutch-like cabinet that belies its interior with classic styling. Two sinks allow both cooks in the family to work simultaneously. Some glass-fronted cabinets keep the sink wall light and attractive. Plants are vital to our outdoor environments for many reasons; several of these - cooling and cleaning the air and providing visual interest - reach indoors as well. At Roots First Design, we jump at the opportunity to bring the regenerative properties of plants across the threshold. The integration of plants into a healing environment like a bathhouse is an obvious place to make this happen. Bada Bastu wanted plants to be a major design feature in the otherwise spare space and looked to Roots First to develop concepts incorporating indoor plants in fresh and unexpected ways. Roots First worked with Andrew Hayes to design a series of suspended steel trays that were strong enough to support the potted plants while maintaining a light, weightless appearance.

Spaces and moments... This is a little vignette in front of the fireplace in the master bedroom. It is a collection of found, collected, pieces from countries around the world. A perfect example of bringing different cultures and styles together in a way that makes sense. NOTE: Persian Tribal rug with Asian lacquered chairs (a Restore find). Chairs were reupholstered in leopard print and accentuated with fun, glam-y blush pink throw pillows. A bit of a wink to the fun, sparkly, girly side of my personality! Also, of note: The his and her alpaca teddy bears. A purchase from one of the artisan markets in Peru. My foundational philosophy: If you like it... Buy it! You like it for a reason. In late 2017, the Paintzen team connected with Perry regarding a very special design project he was working on. Design Exchange was renovating, redesigning and re-furnishing The Ali Forney Center. The Ali Forney Center, based in New York City, is the largest and most comprehensive organization dedicated to housing homeless LGBTQ youth. Nearly 40% of the homeless youth population is LGBTQ. Homeless LGBTQ youth are eight times more likely to experience violence, discrimination, and suicide. AFC houses 124 youths each night and provides services to over 1,400 homeless young people per year. Although the organization does an incredible job to provide safety and shelter to homeless youth, Perry and his team felt the space itself could use some updating and could feel more welcoming. Rooms were dark, cold, and lacked proper storage. Furniture was in poor shape and didn’t work. The rooms were being under-utilized; overall, there was so much more that could be done within the walls of the AFC that could be improved using interior design & paint! We at Paintzen were excited to partner with Design Exchange to do our part in this transformation. The dark, paneled walls were re-painted white. This entirely opened up the space, making it brighter, warmer and more welcoming. The white walls also served as a much better backdrop for smart lighting, as well as for the furniture, wall decor, and new flooring. Beyond painting, Perry and his team used FLOR carpet tiles for durability in a bright Fuchsia shade for a pop of color. They created a more functional layout to maximize the space and make better use of its architectural details and added new furniture including lamps, tables, throws, a sofa, a TV and a Roku to make the space beautiful, and even fun. “Design increases connection and community,” Perry told us. “When we revamp a shelter space, history tells us that the residents spend more time in the space, more time with their peers, building connections and community; a greater sense of home.” Perry’s goal was to create an environment that set its residents up for success by improving their quality of life, outlook and self-esteem. “This isn’t extreme home makeover (although I wish I had that budget!). It’s about improving the aesthetics of the space to create a better environment and experience for people who are going through challenging times. I’ve been lucky enough to have an amount of work that allows me to donate a portion of profits to Design Exchange Projects.” Sean Carlson Perry founded Design Exchange as a way to use his talent, passion, and skills to help those who are struggling, or in a place of immediate need. He was searching to bring deeper meaning and a humanitarian component to his work. Perry has worked with clients in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. “Good design—functionally, aesthetically and ergonomically—promotes a better quality of life.” This is a mantra that describes why Perry does what he does through Design Exchange, working to help the underserved of New York City and other cities across the country. “I grew up gay in Nebraska, and have gone through some hard times when I was younger, but I can’t imagine going through what these kids go through – rejection from family, being kicked out of the house for being who they are, homeless and having nowhere else to turn,” said Perry. “Luckily, there is The Ali Forney Center. Doing these projects for AFC strikes close to home for me, so they are extra special and close to my heart.”

Having large windows in the entryway of your home is great for a number of reasons. They allow the sunlight to enter your front room, making it appear bigger and brighter. And they break up the flat surface of the wall, adding diversity to your architectural design. But sometimes this open windows can pose an issue of privacy. These homeowners wanted a way to prevent outsiders from looking into their home without making the room dark and dim. So we designed these leaded stained glass windows to create a more comfortable, relaxing environment for their guests and family.

This project is full of unique features, and as always lots of variation in textures and materials. The homeowners had just finished complety renovating the inside of this home, and were ready to tackle the outside environment surrounding it. Now the outside is just as gorgeous as the inside!!! We have a two tiered IPE (Brazillian Walnut) deck with a covered pergola over half of the space. Large 10"x10" cedar post & large cedar beams make this not just any........ "PERGOLA". Fans, TV, and lighting make this an area to enjoy all year long. The lower deck features a linear firepit stacked with dual 8' gas burners. Since its an elevated deck railing is important for saftey of their guests, but who wants to obstruct the view of those beautiful sunsets over the pond, so we decided to use custom cable railing to finish the deck space. We then hardscaped along the front of the home layering it into the natural terrain of the property. As you enter the front entrance there is a wonderful piece of artwork that is highlighted in hte space. As if that is not enough we then transformed the north end of the home with a private patio space with "ANOTHER" one of a kind pergola. It is so hard to put all this work into perspective in just photos, but we tried our best. We hope you enjoy the awsome transformation!!! Things To Know About Traditional And Structural Steel Home Construction Constructing a home is not an easy task. It requires a lot of planning. Traditional ways to construct a home would include stick framing, wherein the frame would be setup and the skeleton of the home would be created followed by building each floor and finally the roof. Another method is using concrete. Though this is widely used worldwide it is not used that prominently in US homes. Though the traditional methods of construction are good, a new and energy efficient construction method has come into being namely structural steel home construction. The advantages of structural steel for building homes are manifold. Firstly steel is very strong and in the construction business steel is used because it combines strength with flexibility. A home is prone to various types of stresses and steel because it adapts well to the stress levels is able to withstand these external pressures. In fact, the ability of steel to adapt is the main reason that it is preferred in earthquake prone areas. Big buildings and bridges are made of steel because steel is able to handle stress.
