This house in the high Mesa desert of Southwestern Utah is sustainable. It is built with non-combustible fire-resistant materials of steel, concrete, copper and stucco. Water-recapturing, passive heating and passive cooling are used for a low impact on the environment and energy efficiency. Large overhanging eaves provide essential shade in the summer, solid concrete floors release the heat absorbed from the low winter sun. A skylight provides natural light to the kitchen, which is away from windows and in the center of the plan. The skylight also doubles as a solar chimney.

Meticulously renovated 2 years ago, this circa 1889 brick row house has been thoughtfully designed for today’s urban family. Currently configured as a 2 family home, the owner’s triplex features 3 bedrooms, den and 2½ bathrooms. Keeping future expansion in mind, the oversized 1 bedroom garden apartment can easily be recaptured to integrate with the main residence for a total of 3,000+ square feet of living space across 4 floors.

The previous award winning remodel of their Burr Ridge home brought these clients back to LaMantia and designers Jackie Prazak and Katie Suva, CKD, CBD when they decided it was time to build out their unfinished lower level. As before, their main objective was to create areas to accommodate their extended (and now grown) family.
During the 2013 main floor remodel, a bedroom and Powder Room had been given up to gain the large award winning kitchen, so recapturing those two spaces were high on the “list of desires.” Also on the list was the need for a pool table, a comfortable movie/TV space, lots of game storage and plenty of open area for grandchildren game playing.
The stairway into the lower level was the main challenge in this build-out; both the stair run and tread depth needed to be lengthened to perform to code. To create greater head room on the staircase the main beam was cut and a portion was relocated 18”. A second column at the end of the stair run was added to match the required structural column, allowing the last tread to wrap decoratively onto each side.
Throughout the design planning many details built-into the main level project were repeated to marry the main and lower levels together. The built-in cabinetry and the mirrored doors in the bedroom can also be found in the Guest Room on the main level. The mirrored element over the bed is actually an interior door glazed with mirrors and hung on its side. The parquet look tile flooring of the new bath is reminiscent of the main level wood parquet flooring while the carpenter built wainscoting also can be found in the main hall of the first floor.
The custom walnut stair spindles were fabricated from a photo the homeowner found and loved. In the Movie/TV area the theatre seats are fully powered to accept iPhones, iPads, Laptops, etc. Also note the large chalkboard scorekeeping area with seating for the game players. And, one very special detail can be found under the (now longer) staircase; a private room under the stairs was created with touch-lighting and bean bag chairs for anyone seeking a quiet space.

Our client wanted a SIP built home and we incorporated this and many other energy and sustainability features into this home which was in the Sheboygan County Parade of Homes.
Named "The Green Balanced Home", this project was all about creating practical and stunning living spaces that combined with sound environmental building materials and methods. By showcasing an assortment of leading-edge- green technologies, the Green Balanced Home was the talk of the Parade that year. In cooperation with our client, our methodology was:

4. R-24 Structural Insulated panels (SIPs) for exterior walls, including garage
5. Sprayed foam in basement box sills and attic separation walls

A 750 square foot top floor apartment is transformed from a cramped and musty two bedroom into a sun-drenched aerie with a second floor home office recaptured from an old storage loft. Multiple skylights and a large picture window allow light to fill the space altering the feeling throughout the days and seasons. Views of New York Harbor, previously ignored, are now a daily event.

This is the first burnished solid bronze workstation sink in existence. We recently introduced bronze sinks to the market as an alternative to brass, copper, and stainless steel. Every sink we manufacture is custom-designed with the homeowners. We do not stock sinks at all. As every family is different, the efficiency of the sink should be different. This is a top mount replacement sink in our innovative workstation design we call NexGen. The ledge, instead of a step, offers significant advantages over the typical workstation sink. The lost width that occurs with other workstation sinks is recaptured, offering 34 additional square inches of bowl space on a 36" sink. The design also affords the perforated grid to sit on the bottom of the bowl in the same orientation shown in the photo. In that position, you can wash on the right and set off on the grid on the left. You can also place your colander on the grid and pour your cooked pasta without the fear of "backwash".

This once charming bungalow was typical of many of the homes that were built in the Berkeley/Oakland neighborhoods that date back to the ‘20s and ‘30s—small rooms, limited counter space and closets.
We removed and replaced 85% of the foundation and did a complete seismic upgrade. Structural engineers on the project, Frameworks Engineering, designed the new foundation and the framing for the home’s 220 sq.ft. addition. We transformed the dated bungalow into an energy-efficient, bright, modern home that recaptured its previous architectural interest. Because the owner was going to flip the house, he could have minimized his construction costs with inexpensive solutions. Instead, he chose enhancements that truly added value and made this home attractive to today’s energy-conscious buyers. We installed insulation, LED lighting and dual-pane windows throughout the home. The owner also chose quality appliances, marble countertops and refinished the hardwood floors. The addition of 220 sq.ft. helped make this traditional Berkeley bungalow more attractive to potential buyers; it was quickly snatched off the market for a very good price.

The classic styling of the original home was recaptured and modernized with a vaulted ceiling, wood details, a new brick fireplace and TV focal point, and classic design.

An empty corner space was opened up and a roll-out storage unit installed. Touch latches eliminated the need for handles or pulls. It's handy for dining room supplies and makes good use of wasted space.

The new driveway is straighter, making for easier tandem parking, and recapturing more space for the front yard -- a big improvement.

Mid-sized transitional gray two-story stucco house exterior idea in Other with a hip roof and a shingle roof

The Farley Residence is a dramatic remodel aimed at recapturing the views of the Pacific Ocean. The existing residence, located on a prime ocean facing lot in Shell Beach, was reworked and enhanced to incorporate larger glazing and 8' tall pocketing sliding doors. With these doors open, a corner of the home is completely opened up to the outside, without any columns or walls obstructing the view to the ocean. This blend of traditional Spanish style Architecture and contemporary amenities transform this residence into a timeless gem within the neighborhood.
