By first removing all interior walls of an existing guest suite, a single 7 foot tall partition was placed defining the living, bed and dining areas. To increase the square footage and visual size of the suite, a large box window was placed on the south elevation projecting over the pool and grove of mature oak trees. Along the stairwell four frosted glass panels were installed to filter the west sun. White palette interiors enhanced the beauty of the soft filtered light. The Ackerman-Dater House was built in 1745 and is the recipient of the prestigious State of New Jersey Historic Preservation Award. Ensuing years had taken their toll on the house and major intervention was needed when the owners engaged Morpurgo Architects to restore their home. Our collaboration has protected and preserved this house, perpetuating its continued use. Today, the Ackerman-Dater House is a historic residence that incorporates various contextual building periods, each in harmony with the original, producing a cohesive whole. With the sensitively-placed addition of a new wing, compatible with the style of the existing architecture, we enhanced the Ackerman-Dater House and ensured that it would meet the functional needs of a family living in current times. HIGH PERFORMANCE ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE SACRED SPACES The professionals at Barrett Studio Architects always come up with the most functional design and appealing aesthetics while also achieving high performance structural integrity resulting in minimal maintenance and graceful aging. This is an understatement when it comes to the St. Walburga Abbey (featured in the New York Times and recipient of the Faith & Form Millennium Award for Religious Architecture). As a subcontractor to GH Phipps, our ICF expertise helped during the various expansions to the facility. Phase Four resulted in a new high mountain plains two-story, 20-room living quarters, as well as an addition to the main Sanctuary. Our team installed 12” ICF wall systems from the footings to the roof. The ICF block we used contains recycled content (not virgin foam) enabling the building to achieve R-50+ and a 4-hour fire ratings.
