Just like in the french louvered door we have added a semi-gloss black iron window frame over tempered clear glass. One of the benefits of a reclaimed wood garage door is that the aged wood comes from old trees that provide longer wider boards. As shown in this project the long wide planks make this modern garage door fit nicely with this Newport Modern house.
There are several benefits of using reclaimed timber. Because we live in a world where supply is ever shrinking as we diminish our natural resources, in addition to, over-forestation and the ever growing environmental concerns of global warming or pollutants and wood Beatles killing 15 million trees in our forests of the past decade. Using reclaimed wood helps to preserve our forests and reduces the need for cutting young trees to keep up with the growing demand for timber. The other benefit of using the old timber from barns and old structures has to do with the maturation of the tree originally. Back in the day the only cut mature trees that had reached full potential growth. This wood tends to be stringer and less likely to split or fracture. What they call virgin timber is young trees that are softer and have a greater potential to split. Using reclaimed timber give you yet one more added benefit too, the wood has been aged in an environment that allows the wood to naturally preserve and tarnish with unique characteristics. The wood in old buildings has expanded and contracted constantly over the years and has fully dried out, making it more durable and less prone to warping and splitting. Old wood also tends to have a dense grain making it more stable. Those are natural design elements that make each reclaimed door different! Not one door will be exactly the same. Since the wood has naturally preserved and tarnished then all you have to do is apply a clear coat to the door and you’re done! Thus, leaving your garage, a beautiful naturally finished garage door, that is full of rustic beauty and charm. The wood has done what the wood is going to do and colors and scars tell the 100 year plus, history. What could be more original and charming than a reclaimed wood garage door from Ziegler!
You should always remember that reclaimed timber is itself, a finite resource. There are only so many old structures out there to source the wood from and eventually these too will become unavailable. In the meantime, reclaimed wood provides a valuable source of characterful material for farmhouse, traditional and rustic garage doors, and gates and shutters too! Ziegler is one of the oldest wood door manufactures in California and now body does it better than the originator of style and design. Winning Best New Home of 2013 and labeled “Passive House Perfection” by Fine Homebuilding, this 1600-square foot farmhouse achieves the highest performance standards without sacrificing aesthetic standards. The owners “learned that good design and modern aesthetics were compatible with the kind of energy we were seeking and we couldn’t be more pleased.”
Beyond Efficiency coached the team in resource-efficient framing, and builder Rob Nicely incorporated practices such as 24” stud spacing and appropriately sized insulated headers to reduce lumber costs, speed construction and maximize insulation. He planned ahead by pre-insulating components such as doubled I-joists to ensure an uninterrupted thermal boundary. To achieve the strict Passive House heating demand requirements, phase-change materials (PCMs) are installed behind drywall in walls and dropped ceilings to absorb the sun’s heat from large south-facing windows and release it for passive heating once temperatures cool down. PCMs provide temperature moderation and peak load shifting benefits that were traditionally available only in heavy, high-thermal mass materials.
The house is designed to use about 70% less energy than its code-level counterpart. The homeowners have reported that temperatures remain very stable throughout the home, varying no more than 2 degrees from north to south and top to bottom.

Like many modern homes, this family's primary entrance is through the garage, making the laundry and mudroom an essential part of everyday life. Rather than treating it as a purely utilitarian space, the renovation transformed the room into a beautiful, highly functional transition area that welcomes the homeowner with the same level of design and craftsmanship found throughout the rest of the home. Thoughtful cabinetry, durable finishes, and refined details prove that hardworking spaces can be both practical and luxurious.
In keeping with the project's commitment to sustainable luxury and thoughtful resourcefulness, the natural stone countertop from the original kitchen island was repurposed for the laundry room. Reusing this premium material not only reduced waste but also introduced the elegance and durability of natural stone into a hardworking space. The result is a custom laundry room that combines timeless design, environmental responsibility, and everyday functionality—demonstrating that luxury is as much about thoughtful planning as it is about beautiful materials.

This Master Bathroom was dated, dark, and in dire need of an overhaul. Our clients were inspired by a vacation home and wanted black and white basket-weave tile and tiled wainscoting. We used traditional plumbing fixtures, cabinets, and finishes that would complement the tile. We modernized the shower with dual shower heads, DTV, and teak seat. Detailed tile plans were executed to ensure the tile was impeccably installed throughout. This bath was further enhanced with added lighting and radiant heat flooring. This renovation came together beautifully and our clients are thrilled with their classically elegant new master bathroom. Design by: Hatfield Builders | Photography by: Travis G Lilley

They began the project by paving an area of the garden with naturally beautiful stone paving to form the floor of the seating area. Once all this was in place, it was our turn to help transform the area into a relaxing oasis for the client to enjoy with friends and family. Vistafolia® artificial living green wall panels were assembled to form lush green walls to work alongside the cedar panels. UV protected, our green panels are perfect for outdoor use as they are weatherproof and, will not fade in strong sunlight. As we take environmental responsibility very seriously, our green walls are completely recyclable as well as helping to save resources such as water and, reduce the use of pesticides.
The resulting effect was a modern yet sophisticated seating area, privacy protected and surrounded by vibrant greenery and set on a foundation of beautiful natural stone. The client was so pleased that he is already considering his next project in conjunction with Vistafolia®.

Our pioneer project, Casita de Tierra in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, showcases the natural building techniques of a rubble trench foundation, earthbag construction, natural plasters, earthen floors, and a composting toilet.
Our earthbag wall system consists of locally available, cost-efficient, polypropylene bags that are filled with a formula of clay and aggregate unearthed from our building site. The bags are stacked like bricks in running bonds, which are strengthened by courses of barbed wire laid between each row, and tamped into place. The walls are then plastered with a mix composed of clay, sand, soil and straw, and are followed by gypsum and lime renders to create attractive walls.
The casita exhibits a load-bearing wall system demonstrating that thick earthen walls, with no rebar or cement, can support a roofing structure. We, also, installed earthen floors, created an indoor dry-composting toilet system, utilized local woods for the furniture, routed all grey water to the outdoor garden, and maximized air flow by including cross-ventilating screened windows below the natural palm frond and cane roof.
Casita de Tierra exemplifies an economically efficient, structurally sound, aesthetically pleasing, environmentally kind, and socially responsible home.

New Residential Apartment Building
New York, New York
We designed a new four-story 5,400 sf apartment building on a city-owned vacant lot. With a very modest construction budget of under $250/sf, we planned well proportioned living spaces and fully equipped kitchens with Energy Star appliances. Exposed concrete and bamboo flooring give the interiors a warm and contemporary look. At the exterior, zinc rain screen panels, bluestone trim, stucco, and brick complement the neighborhood’s rich texture, while the building’s energy consumption is reduced by the installation of a high-albedo roof and individual thermostats in each apartment.
The completed HPD-funded project resourcefully integrates design features commonly found in more expensive developments with Harlem’s need for mixed income housing.

Red cedar shingle siding looks beautiful on this historic home located in the heart of the village in Fairhaven, MA.
Many homeowners choose this timeless wood siding for their homes. Here are several reasons why cedar shingles are popular:
Curb Appeal: Homeowners who prefer classic New England style will often opt for the elegance of cedar shingle siding. It’s timeless beauty can be showcased naturally with a weathered patina or be treated with clear, semi-transparant, or solid finishes.
Natural Insulator: Low-density softwoods, like cedar, are more cellular in composition in comparison to other siding materials. This makes cedar shingle siding a natural insulator which helps regulate temperatures and reduce noise.
Rot and Insect Resistant: Red cedar shingles have oils and acids that naturally repel insects and resist rot. With regular cleaning and/or treatment, this long-lasting siding will provide homeowners with a lifetime of protection and curb appeal.
Environmentally Friendly: As one of the most popular siding choices, homeowners who are conscience of their planetary footprint love red cedar because it’s a renewable resource. According to the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association, North American forests have grown by 20% since 1970 thanks to the replacement of harvested trees by lumber production companies.
