Victorian black and white tiles in the hallway of a house in Wanstead (E11), laid in what is often referred to as the York Pattern with a Kingsley Border, however sadly neglected for many years after being covered with a heavy underlay and carpet.
First we cleaned the tiles with a dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-clean which releases the dirt stuck in the pores of the tiles; the solution was scrubbed into the floor with a buffer machine fitted with a black scrubbing pad and then the released soil extracted with a wet vacuum. The floor was then rinsed with water and extracted again with the wet vacuum. It was left to dry for thirty minutes and the floor inspected which revealed a few stubborn areas that were then treated using Nano-Tech Heavy Build-up remover (HBU) which was left to dwell for forty minutes and then scrubbed and then extracted again with water.
To Slow down or stop the possibility of an issue we sometimes have with older floors such as Victorian Tiles we often use a product developed by Tile Doctor called Acid Gel, this is left on the surface for 5 minutes and then removed with light agitation and water and a wet vac machine, the floor is then rinsed with water again just to make sure there is no Acid Gel left in the Tile or on the surface. The Acid Gel not only Keeps mineral salts (efflorescence) at bay but also helps as a bonding agent for the sealer to make sealing theses type of tiles a lot easier.
After leaving the floor to dry overnight I came back the next day to seal the floor using four coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go which is ideal for Victorian tiled floors as it leaves a low sheen finish whilst providing excellent stain protection.

One Riverside Park is New York’s most distinguished new address, introducing a new level of luxury to waterfront living on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. With floor to ceiling windows throughout you enjoy sweeping views of the Hudson and feel the energy of the fast-paced city that never sleeps just floors below you. With this interior the client wanted to capture that excitement but maintain a cool + comfortable environment. What we came up with is what we refer to as Industrial Chic – an interior that celebrates the grit and sexiness of the city but also embraces the metropolitan chicness that only Manhattan can provide. We took raw elements such as blackened steel, bronze and concrete and paired them with soft, tactile fabrics like cottons, silk, leathers + furs in subtle shades of greys + neutral tones to create an inviting, artistic + unique atmosphere. It’s the small yet subtle details of this interior that set the mood – buffalo leather clad columns + walls, crystal + LED wallpapers, fur rugs + bed throws and polished precious metal details throughout.
DL featured product:
DL Custom Upholstery: multi-directional sofa, DLUSH media group, modernist bedroom suite. I give you a recent kitchen project complete. The kitchen back splash is a place of impact. It is a place where you can say, "welcome to my kitchen and this is how I would like you to feel in it". What does this design say to you? It tells me that the homeowner appreciates fine things, they are traditional and lean a bit toward formal.
Trending now are very plain back splashes without a lot of detail so I have to confess, it was nice giving a nod to tradition in this lower Fairfield County delight. After many iterations and decisions, I finally came up with the winning combination that spoke to the homeowner! This was not a simple design. Quite intricate with the dueling mosaics between the area over the range and the area over the sink in the Butler Pantry. I also wanted to connect the two spaces with coordinating frames and complimentary stone in the field area of the perimeter. Here I added random touches of the mosaic frame work creating little slats of the dark brown limestone material.
Used in this scheme were products from three different vendors and all resourced at Karen Berkemeyer Home Ltd. It is how things combine that make it work so well.
The Butler Pantry and Bar Area is given focus. Here the expert installer was asked to surround the herringbone 3x6 stone tile with limestone 3/8ths inch square mosaic pieces. This job was not for an amateur. I used a round pencil to transition and frame. Here is what the client said, "Thanks again. Everything looks amazing! Mike did a fantastic job....the crew were neat, get and efficient. Thanks also for referring Mike to us."
Here is where I started: I posted this earlier knowing it was the one that would make it all come together:
So many looks, so many choices and one is just right for you. Whether you are refreshing your kitchen or starting over new, the back splash is the place of impact. It is where it all comes together and is a very important aspect of the kitchen. Ideally it should be considered in concert with all the other materials in order to get it just right.
