Context
Norbert and Robin had dreamed of retiring in a Passive House-certified home overlooking the Lubberland Creek Preserve in Southeastern New Hampshire, and they’d done their homework. They were interested in using four integrated Zehnder America (www.zehnderamerica.com) technologies to make the 1,900 square foot home extremely energy efficient.
They didn’t miss any opportunity to innovate or raise the bar on sustainable design. Our goals were focused on guaranteeing their comfort in every season, saving them money on a fixed income, and reducing the home’s overall impact on the environment as much as possible.
Response
The home faces directly south and captures sunlight all winter under tall and vaulted ceilings and a continuous band of slim-lined, Italian triple-pane windows and doors that provide gorgeous views of the wild preserve. A second-story office nook and clerestory provide even deeper views, with a little more privacy.
Zehnder, which previously sold its innovative products only in Europe, took on the project as a test house. We designed around Zehnder’s vent-based systems, including a geothermal heat loop that heats and cools incoming air, a heat pump cooling system, electric towel-warmer radiators in the bathrooms, and a highly efficient energy recovery ventilator, which recycles heat and minimizes the need for air conditioning. The house effectively has no conventional heating system—and doesn’t need it. We also looked for efficiencies and smart solutions everywhere, from the lights to the windows to the insulation.
The kitchen exhaust hood eliminates, cleans, and recirculates cooking fumes in the home’s unique kitchen, custom-designed to match the ways Norbert likes to prepare meals. There are several countertop heights so they can prep and clean comfortably, and the eat-in kitchen also has two seating heights so people can sit and socialize while they’re working on dinner. An adjacent screened porch greets guests and opens to the view.
A roof-mounted solar system helps to ensure that the home generates more energy than it consumes—helped by features such as a heat pump water heater, superinsulation, LED lights and a polished concrete floor that helps regulate indoor temperatures.

The 722 Ash Street residence consists of a 1500 sf primary house with a contiguous 500 sf accessory dwelling. The project is set in the rich culture of North Lawrence, its rear property line abuts the Lawrence levee trail which runs for nine miles along the north bank of the Kansas River.
North Lawrence is known for its quality soil, large trees, curbless streets and random size parcels before it breaks into larger farms further from the urban center. It is built on the typical orthogonal grid of American development, but it represents the older growth of the city prior to urban planners and zoning regulations. The rumble of freight trains and farm trucks in the shadows of the towering grain elevators are only blocks away. It is home to many who enjoy being only a bridge crossing away from Lawrence’s vibrant downtown but are far enough away to maintain their independence from many of the restrictions on living near the historic district. They can work in their large gardens and toiling in their garages and shops in a manner more rural than urban.
The house on 722 Ash St. is imbued with the character of North Lawrence and the Levee Trail area. The design was inspired by the Midwestern farmstead vernacular of the region. These timeless vernacular qualities house all the accommodations necessary for modern, sustainable living. A unique feature of this house is the Accessory Dwelling Unit permitted in the zoning district. It is a small separate residence on the same lot that can be used for income property or for extended family members. It also supports the city of Lawrence’s goals of increased density close to downtown rather than continued sprawl into the countryside.
The buildings use technology and common-sense design to reduce the building’s footprint and assure the owners low energy use and costs. A 4.9 Kw solar collection system is located on the only south facing gable and the super insulated envelopes (r-62 roof and r-35 walls) of all three forms easily exceeds the standards. Studio 804 continues their long standing pattern of maintaining the highest level of sustainable design while remaining contextually sensitive to the surrounding community. This house, like every Studio 804 project since 2008, is USGBC LEED Platinum Certified.

The original structure at Yankee Point was a simple 1970s home with “good bones.” Unfortunately, it was also a case where less-than-poetic considerations threatened to eclipse design. Setbacks, height and footprint restrictions and other building regulations had boxed in the renovation to the point where there was literally nowhere left to build. Fortunately, the house sat 6' above grade on the ocean side. With some three-dimensional ingenuity, this ultimately provided ample space to add a new full height lower level without exceeding stringent lot coverage limitations. Today, upon entering the residence, you catch a quick glimpse of the ocean views and of the cascading roof lines designed to echo the motions of ocean waves beyond. The space opens up as you move toward the ocean to reveal a panoramic view.

The warm texture of a rammed earth anchors this light-filled home. Cocooning living areas and lining the entry, providing thermal mass, aesthetics and regulating humidity. The rammed earth is a spine, leading visitors from the double-height entry to a warm, bright living area. Living areas and kids' bedrooms are warmed by winter sun, looking north. Recycled timber pergola and portico continue the theme externally. A careful plan and high-performance thermal envelope create an energy efficient home with 8.3 EER. Solar-powered hydronic slab heating and winter sunshine keep the house warm in winter. Thermally massive concrete floors + rammed earth walls keep cool in summer, protected by highly-insulated external walls. The double-height entry acts as thermal chimney, venting warm air as it rises from living areas. Triple-glazed composite windows complete the energy efficient design. Modern materials + colours plus recycled red brick combine contemporary Canberran architecture and style.

In this primary bathroom, the lighting scheme was key to achieve the client’s goals and create a space where the client would enjoy being. The bathroom felt cramped, dark, visually heavy. The client was also claustrophobic, making the use of the space uncomfortable.
The goal was to transform this space into a relaxed modern spa-like atmosphere, rethink and simplify the floorplan avoiding visual clutter, access natural light, add efficient lighting, and create more visual space.
The lighting plan was crucial to increase visual space. My first thought was to add a skylight to access natural light that is so effective in enlarging the feel of a space.
After looking at the attic and roof lines it became clear that this was not an option. After some research I found the perfect solution: a smart light fixture that mimics a window. It is installed between studs or ceiling joists. The fixture replicates the light of the sun during the day. It goes from soft morning light - to bright noon - to soft dawn light. By recessing the fixture into the ceiling, the skylight-look and extra height was achieved.
The benefits of this light go beyond beautiful design. The fixture is sustainable, energy efficient, and made to last for decades. It regulates the body’s circadian rhythm, helping against sleeping problems and seasonal affective disorder. It also integrates biophilic design, creating connections to nature and benefiting people that spend hours indoors.
The use of mood lighting was also key, creating a cozy, welcoming feel to this home-spa. All the lights are dimmable, and plenty of indirect light sources, like the gorgeous vanity pendants and LED mirrors, create the perfect setting. Not forgetting to mention the soft curves of the bathtub chandelier. This is the perfect place to relax in the bubbly bathtub!

CertainTeed MainStreet vinyl siding in Autumn Yellow along with CertainTeed Cedar Impressions 1/2 round shingles in Colonial White bring durable beauty to this home. With realistic wood textures, shadow lines and a beautiful collection of fade-resistant colors, you can give your home classic curb appeal without the maintenance!
This farmer’s porch was finished using Timbertech AZEK Harvest Collection decking in Kona and a Timbertech rail system in White. AZEK decking captures the look of natural wood without having to worry about resealing, splinters, and rot! Made to also handle different weather conditions this composite decking will not fade or split when under pressure. It is the perfect place to read a book, visit with guests, or enjoy a morning cup of coffee! With a gorgeous collection of colors and realistic wood textures, there is something to suit everyone’s style.
We also installed Harvey Classic Double Hung Replacement Windows in the color, White. Our most popular selling window for good reason Harvey Classic Windows has a timeless look that will never go out of style. They are customized to order so homeowners can get their dream perfect windows!
Lastly, we installed two Therma-Tru doors in the color, Mahogany. Made out of fiberglass Therma-Tru doors require less maintenance, stay painted longer, and regulate your home’s temperature. These doors come in a variety of styles and colors so you can really make your home stand out!

Waterview Times Two
It is all about view here where river meets sea. The “new home” (actually an addition) is well-positioned on the site. Views are framed in traditional double hung windows with a six lites over one lite configuration. The waterside elevations are clad in a variety of multi-leaf sliding glass doors for view and access to the outdoor decks. For these glass panels, a simple “top row” of lites fits the bill. Here they seem to say, “I’m a traditionalist, but I’m walking a modern edge along the shore to promote better view, light and connection to the water.”
The views require no detailing or enhancements, but the house does. The roofline is unmistakably traditional. It keeps the roof line low, a must for a structure designed to conform with the FEMA prescribed BFE (Base Flood Elevation.) The exterior comes to life thanks to generous trim at the rake, fascia, soffits and frieze boards of the traditional gambrel roof. A skin of cedar shingles at 5” exposure reinforces the site-specific design. As you look around everywhere on this vacation peninsula, you’ll notice the consistency of weathered shingled exteriors. Its “dormered” second floor is tucked nicely in the roofline to also make sure it fits within the context of the neighboring older homes.
Because the coastal FEMA regulations pushed our home higher from the surrounding ground and safely from the impending storm surges, expansive decks extend along the water side. The decks are our de facto landscape and outdoor rooms. They are positioned vertically two stair risers below the finished first floor. The drop in deck heights preserves interior views over furniture and guests from inside the home. Steel cable railings provide a see-through safety “guard” as required by the building codes.
The open plan on the interior provides the perpetual connection to the water. View dominates and directs the floor plan. Symmetrical window groupings will organize the first-floor plan. There will be plenty of space to handle the guests, but its mission is to provide good order for day to day living for just the homeowners themselves. Beds on the upper level are positioned with view in mind too. Waking up to the sun reflecting off the water is opportunity not to pass up.
With the dust and noise finally behind us, we begin our plan for phase two. More Updates coming soon!

The clean lines, and bold design covered in black perfectly frame this pool area, and work to transform this suburban backyard, into an updated, modern outdoor space.
The panels are aluminum, designed specifically to meet pool code regulations, with a flush bottom-rail, and 54" tall flat top-rail. The gate is 4' wide, and has self-closing hinges, and a D+D Tech Magna Latch.
This fence is everything it needs to be. Strong. Stylish. Safe.

a classic city home, built in the 50’s. Her family moved in August of ’18, and in less than a year, she’s already completed a number of remodel projects including additions to the master bedroom and 2-bedroom + bath “kids’ wing.” She’s opened walls from the kitchen to the living and dining rooms creating a massive open floor plan and refinished all the original hardwood floors. After seeing her beautifully furnished space and hearing her listing everything she’s done to get her house the way it looks today, I had so many exciting ideas to help her add the finishing touches she was needing and to give her the look she was going for.
Referencing her inspiration pics saved to Houzz and Pinterest, the first item on the list was to add window treatments. These were presented in a soft, crisp white fabric which maintains the brightness for each room, diffusing the sunlight throughout, keeping each space light and airy. The simple functional panels give her the privacy she wanted from all the passersby walking the park, which are lined to help regulate the temperature differences she needed. The hardware for these panels is something to mention –simple, modern, matte black rods and brackets, highlighted with acrylic finials and gold rings. This combination is an exclamation point showcasing what custom window treatments can really do for a room. The main dining room window boasts a striking contrast of rich black wide leather tape, drawing your eye right to the beautiful picture window, which in and of itself is a perfect accent to this space.
From there, adding the right wall hangings and artwork, task lighting, accessories, and accents layered throughout, mixing lots of textures, metal finishes, and varying shades of color synchronizes one room to the next buttoning up the entire design concept she was striving to achieve.

We had designed and fabricated this grand curved stair on UK Stair Regulations “Approved_Document_K”.The client had chosen a curved glass stair instead of a traditional wood stair to create modern, safe, efficient, and different spaces. The stylish grand entrance curved staircase makes the house very impressive.
