Description: In early 1994, the architects began work on the project and while in construction (demolition, grading and foundations) the owner, due to circumstances beyond his control, halted all construction of the project. Seven years later the owner returned to the architects and asked them to complete the partially constructed house. Due to code changes, city ordinances and a wide variety of obstacles it was determined that the house was unable to be completed as originally designed. After much consideration the client asked the architect if it were possible to alter/remodel the partially constructed house, which was a remodel/addition to a 1970’s ranch style house, into a project that fit into current zoning and structural codes. The owner also requested that the house’s footprint and partially constructed foundations remain to avoid the need for further entitlements and delays on an already long overdue and difficult hillside site. The architects’ main challenge was how to alter the design that reflected an outdated philosophical approach to architecture that was nearly a decade old. How could the house be re-conceived reflecting the architect and client’s maturity on a ten-year-old footprint? The answer was to remove almost all of the previously proposed existing interior walls and transform the existing footprint into a pavilion-like structure that allows the site to in a sense “pass through the house”. This allowed the client to take better advantage of a limited and restricted building area while capturing extraordinary panoramic views of the San Fernando Valley and Hollywood Hills. Large 22-foot high custom sliding glass doors allow the interior and exterior to become one. Even the studio is separated from the house and connected only by an exterior bridge. Private spaces are treated as loft-like spaces capturing volume and views while maintaining privacy. Limestone floors extend from inside to outside and into the lap pool that runs the entire length of the house creating a horizon line at the edge of the view. Other natural materials such as board formed concrete, copper, steel and cherry provides softness to the objects that seem to float within the interior volume. By placing objects and materials "outside the frame," a new frame of reference deepens our sense of perception. Art does not reproduce what we see; rather it makes us see.

This private residence in Arizona has 22 exquisite slabs of onyx in the master bathroom. The overall goal of this project was to create a museum experience for the homeowners, yet have it remain comfortable and livable. The master bathroom contains an 18 ft. long x 10 ft. tall backlit shower wall that opens to a private outdoor space. Walls within the 440 sq. ft. master bath were floated square and plumb, water proofed and clad with the direct adhered method per the MIA installation standard for wet areas-stone slab residential showers. The onyx slabs were sized, templated for random colors, cut and fabricated with a 1/6" chamfer to create a jeweled edge. Hidden in these walls were backlit medicine cabinets, trash bins, and accent panels. Each panel was highlighted with a stainless muntz bar on all sizes. The custom backlit trough sinks were fabricated to contain a slot drain and functioning drawers. The entire master bath floor was treated as a wet area with suspended shower floor. A secondary shower floor underneath, pitched water to drain system below.

This project was designed, and developed by Rhodes Architecture + Light while Josh Meharry was a team member. Set along the Puget Sound coastline with views over the water of islands and the Olympic Peninsula beyond, Seaview Residence locates all of the primary living spaces along these panoramic views and provides a variety of framed views as well as the ability to completely open interior spaces to the natural environmment beyond. The house is broken up into three “blocks” situated around a central entry courtyard. The main living spaces spill out onto waterfront terraces and decks, while the guest block opens onto the vegetated garden court within. A glass jewelbox separates these two blocks and functions as both the main entrance and the stairs. This space incorporates open stairs and bridges with areas that are left open to visually connect all three levels and allow daylight to penetrate the interior of the residence. Horizontal screens were integrated along the stairs to provide a combined sense of openness and privacy between the main living areas and the private guest wing. The garage block screens the property from the street and provides a lower level apartment/ gym which opens onto it’s own sunken court. The roof incorporates a large photovoltaic array that provides more power than the house consumes. All roof stormwater runoff is treated by a bioretention planter in the entry courtyard, and the pavers used on the terraces are all pervious, allowing water to penetrate and be held by the soil below rather than being diverted to the public stormwater system. The eco-friendly exterior materials, a combination of resysta shingles, shou sugi ban charred boards, metal roofing, concrete and steel, were selected to remain maintenance free in the demanding coastline environment and to be a modern reflection of materials typically seen on coastal homes throughout the Pacific Northwest. The muted and light interior materials were selected to tie in with the natural colors, textures and materials found in the sand, pebbles, rocks, driftwood, and water which is typical along this coastline.

This project features a handcrafted cedar barrel sauna with a panoramic front window and integrated porch, installed as a complete outdoor wellness setup. The sauna is built from solid Western Red Cedar and equipped with a wood-burning sauna stove capable of reaching temperatures of up to 194°F, providing a traditional and authentic sauna experience. Western Red Cedar is naturally resistant to moisture, mold, and decay, making it one of the most durable wood species for long-term outdoor use. The solid cedar construction remains stable through seasonal temperature changes and requires only simple and occasional maintenance. The interior typically needs only basic cleaning and ventilation, while the exterior can be treated with standard wood oils if desired. This product combination features a rare aesthetic match in the looks of interior and exterior wooden flooring. On top of that, application is nearly unlimited, even in circumstances with extreme changes in humidity and temperature. This is a result of a meticulous attitude and wise use of raw materials during manufacturing. This particular floor finish in anthracite shades is based on application of natural hardwax oils on engineered oak flooring inside, and on solid ash flooring outside. The oak and ash wood have both been pretreated with 100% natural processes resulting in a dark, warm appearance into the deepest grains. The thick top layer of the engineered oak floorboard (6+mm) provides that the floor and the dark colour will remain for a lifetime. The pretreatment of the solid ash flooring also highly improves its stability and durability, and is now even suitable along a pool! The outside terrace or patio will now be a TRUE extension of the living room, and designed for a smooth transition. No standard products, but personalized as desired. Last but not least exterior siding and paneling can even be matched. ‘WOODlife-Inside out’ is available in European oak, (thermo) ash and Douglas fir.

I was recently contacted by a client who lives in the small coastal town of Bridlington, East Yorkshire. Bridlington has a small sea fishing port known for its great shellfish. My client had a Limestone floor that was really in need of a fresh up: over the years the tiles had become dull and worn-looking, and she was keen to restore a nice shine to the surface. I was on hand to treat the floor to a much needed clean, polish and seal. My first job was to strip off the old sealer. I did this using a coarse diamond burnishing pad fitted to a rotary machine. The floor was then given a thorough rinse with clean water to clear off any dirt and excess sealer. Following this, the excess water was quickly soaked up with a wet-dry vac machine to make sure there was no leftover moisture, as this could have potentially affected the performance of the new sealer (which I would apply at a later stage). To polish the floor I continued with the system of burnishing pads, starting first with a medium burnishing pad, followed by the fine and very fine pads to achieve the desired effect. The result was a very nice overall sheen. After cleaning and polishing, the only task remaining was to provide the floor with a durable seal. I did this using Tile Doctor Ultra Seal, which is a premium, natural-look penetrating sealer that is specially designed to provide maximum stain protection from within. This particular product is suitable for use on a range of different natural stone floors, including Limestone, Slate, Granite, Marble and Travertine. Overall, my client was very happy with the results. As you can see from the photographs, the clean, polish and seal made a marked difference on the condition of the floor, turning the tiles from dull and lifeless to full of character and colour once again.

This Victorian tiled hallway floor at a property in Twickenham was in great physical condition considering its age but just hadn’t been cleaned or sealed in quite a few years. Over the years the protective sealer has worn away and dirt tracked in from outside had sunk deep into the pores of the tile. The floor looked dull, and my customer was finding it hard to clean and maintain effectively. To remove the ground in dirt from within the pores of the tile I needed to apply a strong cleaning product that would breakdown the dirt and deal with any remaining sealer left on the floor. Usually, I find the sealer down the center of the hallway is worn away with use, but you still find traces towards the wall. To do the renovation effectively I would need to remove all the sealer during cleaning otherwise you risk an uneven appearance. The best sealer stripper and cleaner for the job is a product called Tile Doctor Remove and Go so I mopped a strong dilution onto the floor and then left it to soak in for around fifteen minutes. To get the best from this product it’s advised to give it a long dwell time thereby allowing it to break down old sealer and dissolve the dirt and contaminants. The floor was then scrubbed with a rotary floor machine to work the product into the pores of the tile and release the trapped dirt. After the first pass the floor was rinsed with a little water and the soil extracted using a machine. After inspecting the floor some areas were re-treated using the same process to ensure all the sealer and dirt had been removed. After a final inspection I left the tiles to dry off overnight. The following day I returned and started by taking moisture readings from different parts of the floor. Its not a good idea to apply a sealer to a damp tile and damp areas should be dried out with a heat gun first. My client was keen to have a classic shiny appearance, so I chose Tile Doctor Seal and Go to add protection to the tiles. The sealer will prevent dirt becoming ingrained in the tile and protect the floor from staining caused by spillages whilst making it very easy for our customer to maintain in the future. As you can see from the pictures, it also gives a nice sheen finish to add lustre to the floor as requested by my customer. Before leaving we had a quick chat about maintaining the floor and a warning about the use of strong floor cleaning products which can be over strong and prematurely strip the sealer away over time. For this floor I recommend Tile Doctor Neutral cleaner which is an effective cleaner but as its name suggests is pH neutral and mild enough not to harm the sealer. This product combination features a rare aesthetic match in the looks of interior and exterior wooden flooring. On top of that, application is nearly unlimited, even in circumstances with extreme changes in humidity and temperature. This is a result of a meticulous attitude and wise use of raw materials during manufacturing. This particular floor finish in anthracite shades is based on application of natural hardwax oils on engineered oak flooring inside, and on solid ash flooring outside. The oak and ash wood have both been pretreated with 100% natural processes resulting in a dark, warm appearance into the deepest grains. The thick top layer of the engineered oak floorboard (6+mm) provides that the floor and the dark colour will remain for a lifetime. The pretreatment of the solid ash flooring also highly improves its stability and durability, and is now even suitable along a pool!
