Lincoln Farmhouse

OVERVIEW. This LEED Platinum certified modern farmhouse ties into the cultural landscape of Lincoln, Massachusetts - a town known for its rich history, farming traditions, conservation efforts, and visionary architecture. The goal was to design and build a new single family home on 1.8 acres that respects the neighborhood’s agrarian roots, produces more energy than it consumes, and provides the family with flexible spaces to live-play-work-entertain. The resulting 2,800 SF home is proof that families do not need to compromise on style, space or comfort in a highly energy-efficient and healthy home.
CONNECTION TO NATURE. The attached garage is ubiquitous in new construction in New England’s cold climate. This home’s barn-inspired garage is intentionally detached from the main dwelling. A covered walkway connects the two structures, creating an intentional connection with the outdoors between auto and home.
FUNCTIONAL FLEXIBILITY. With a modest footprint, each space must serve a specific use, but also be flexible for atypical scenarios. The Mudroom serves everyday use for the couple and their children, but is also easy to tidy up to receive guests, eliminating the need for two entries found in most homes. A workspace is conveniently located off the mudroom; it looks out on to the back yard to supervise the children and can be closed off with a sliding door when not in use. The Away Room opens up to the Living Room for everyday use; it can be closed off with its oversized pocket door for secondary use as a guest bedroom with en suite bath.
NET POSITIVE ENERGY. The all-electric home consumes 70% less energy than a code-built house, and with measured energy data produces 48% more energy annually than it consumes, making it a 'net positive' home. Once the endless winter has finally subsided, it is time to start thinking about your spring tree care! Once the last of the snow and ice has finally melted away, your trees and garden will be released once again. It is finally time to prepare for your spring tree care. If you want to maximize your tree’s new growth, you are going to want to follow Five Star Tree Services spring checklist! You can also start planning for new trees as well. We are going to give you all the information you need to know in order to properly take care of your trees this spring.
Inspect Your Trees
When all the ice and snow has left your trees, this is a good time to inspect for any damage done from the harsh winter. There aren’t any leaves that will get in your way, making it easier to see anything amiss, like damage or diseases. If you hire an arborist to do this initial spring inspection, you can guarantee that they will analyze every tree on your property very carefully to make sure they can provide you with the most accurate report. This report will make you aware of any and all tree problems on your property. The arborist will also go over all possible ways that you can fix these problems and explain them to you.
Preemptive Pruning
In order to properly prepare your trees for their spring growth, you will need to prune them. A trained arborist will be able to identify dead branches and cut them off. They will also deal with damaged branches, weak branches, and any unsafe branches and make sure they remove them before they become a problem or hazard. We recommend that you prune or hire an arborist to prune your trees in the early spring. If you wait and prune your trees after their spring growth, they are more likely to be attacked by pests and diseases. When done properly, your spring pruning is going to have a major positive impact on the overall health of your trees.
Cleanup the Gardens
Part of your spring cleaning is not limited to your home. You also need to clean your gardens too! This is an important part of your checklist routine. Fertilization of Your Trees
After the winter has subsided, it usually takes most of the nutrients out of the soil. Which is why you should be taking advantage of fertilizing your trees in the spring. It is important to feed your trees in order to provide them with the adequate nutrients they need in order for them to be healthy and grow during the spring. When trees are properly fertilized, this helps them fight off diseases and pests.
Add Some Mulch
There are many marvelous benefits to mulching in the spring. This improves the soil quality that’s around your tree. It also helps to keep the soil fertilized and moist. Mulch is also a fantastic way to prohibit weeds from developing and growing in your gardens. This is very important for newly planted and young trees. We recommend that you add 2-4 inches of mulch around each tree in the early spring.

This transitional home blends a modern aesthetic with a character home in a historic neighborhood of Metro Vancouver. Featuring custom architectural concrete, paving stones, horizontal cedar fencing and siding, backyard metal trellis and a very unique and modern landscape, this home is a perfect space for entertaining.

2018 DESIGN OVATION HONORABLE MENTION/ TRADITIONAL LIVING ROOM. Years after a major remodel, this couple contacted the designer as they had for 25 yrs to work with the contractor to create this Living Area Addition. To warm up the room and bring the ceiling down, the designer recommended the use of wood planks on the ceiling, along with 2 large-scale iron chandeliers. The double row of windows brings the outdoors in, providing wonderful daylight. The wall space above the opening to the adjacent Library was the perfect location for canvas panels inspired by the wife’s favorite Japanese artwork and commissioned by the designer with a local artist. The room provides plenty of seating for watching TV, reading or conversation. The open space between the sofa table and library allows room for the client to explore her heritage through Japanese Sword practicing or her Ikebana creations using their landscape. Why Mattress Thickness Is One of the Most Misunderstood Specs
When most people shop for a memory foam mattress, they focus on firmness, materials, and brand. Thickness tends to be an afterthought — or worse, treated as a proxy for quality. The assumption goes: thicker equals better. That assumption is wrong in a meaningful number of cases, and getting it wrong means waking up with exactly the kind of stiffness, pressure pain, or lower back ache you bought a new mattress to avoid.
The right thickness for a memory foam mattress is not a single number. It is a combination of your body weight, your sleep position, and any specific health conditions you are managing. A 14-inch mattress that provides ideal support for a 250-pound side sleeper may cause a 115-pound stomach sleeper to experience spinal misalignment all night. A 10-inch mattress that works perfectly for a back sleeper of average build offers inadequate pressure relief for a heavier side sleeper whose hips need to sink further into the comfort layer before the support base engages.
