In coming to Minnesota from Iceland, the owners of Home 4 found themselves more than 3,000 miles away from home, hoping to build something new – literally and figuratively – that would feel like home for their family of five. They purchased a scenic piece of land in Rochester and identified a general idea of the spaces they would need, but they struggled with how to define a sense of character that would incorporate their culture and identity into the design. The architect-led design team was tasked with creating a house that would help establish the homeowners’ roots in a new country while still recalling familiar comforts of their heritage.
The result is a warm family home that combines elements of Nordic design with a touch of American farmhouse aesthetic. Gracious proportions, custom woodworking, and cheerful details create a welcoming atmosphere, while modern conveniences like a large mudroom and second-floor laundry help day-to-day life feel easy.
Around each corner, a new detail greets the eye, from the Lundie-inspired column at the staircase, to the double-heart detail inscribed in the woodwork, to the custom table designed for the breakfast nook. Each element is lovely individually, but experiencing the holistic effect as the details intentionally pair and play together helps to craft a house that feels like home.
Most important, the homeowners’ history, heritage, and hopes are melded together into a home that represents their family. Each unique element and carefully considered material combine to form a house that feels as if it could have belonged to this family for generations, even though it is brand new.

In the heart of Chicago's vibrant West Loop, this transformative renovation reimagined the main level of a distinguished home, meticulously enhancing its functionality and aesthetic appeal.
The project ambitiously relocated the laundry facilities to the basement and removed the existing pantry, strategically reclaiming valuable square footage to expand the kitchen area. This thoughtful redesign paved the way for a more expansive, state-of-the-art culinary space.
Central to the kitchen's allure is a striking aged brass chandelier, suspended with precision above the island. This elegant fixture not only serves as a luminous focal point but also embodies the sleek and sophisticated design ethos that permeates the entire renovation.
The primary aim of this project was to elevate the home's guest entertaining capabilities, a goal achieved with remarkable success. The guest bathroom received a significant upgrade, adorned with the distinctive charm of Harlequin, a British brand wallpaper, known for its bold and whimsical designs. This choice adds a layer of refined eccentricity and texture to the space, enhancing the guest experience.
Furthering the enhancements, the entryway to the house was also updated, setting a welcoming tone that harmonizes with the overall design narrative. These alterations collectively contribute to a more inviting and functional environment, perfectly suited for hosting and entertaining.
This comprehensive renovation, encompassing design, labor, and materials, represented an investment of just over $160,000. The result is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and strategic planning, culminating in a space that not only meets the contemporary needs of its inhabitants but does so with unmatched elegance and style.

Inspiration for a mediterranean formal and enclosed living room remodel in Orange County with green walls and a standard fireplace

In this beautifully crafted home, the living spaces blend contemporary aesthetics with comfort, creating an environment of relaxed luxury. As you step into the living room, the eye is immediately drawn to the panoramic view framed by the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, which seamlessly integrate the outdoors with the indoors. The serene backdrop of the ocean sets a tranquil scene, while the modern fireplace encased in elegant marble provides a sophisticated focal point.
The kitchen is a chef's delight with its state-of-the-art appliances and an expansive island that doubles as a breakfast bar and a prepping station. White cabinetry with subtle detailing is juxtaposed against the marble backsplash, lending the space both brightness and depth. Recessed lighting ensures that the area is well-lit, enhancing the reflective surfaces and creating an inviting ambiance for both cooking and social gatherings.
Transitioning to the bathroom, the space is a testament to modern luxury. The freestanding tub acts as a centerpiece, inviting relaxation amidst a spa-like atmosphere. The walk-in shower, enclosed by clear glass, is accentuated with a marble surround that matches the vanity top. Well-appointed fixtures and recessed shelving add both functionality and a sleek aesthetic to the bathroom. Each design element has been meticulously selected to provide a sanctuary of sophistication and comfort.
This home represents a marriage of elegance and pragmatism, ensuring that each room is not just a sight to behold but also a space to live and create memories in.

The original house was built in 1951 for a Jewish immigrant family from Libya. At first it was a tiny unit, typical of the houses built by the Jewish Agency in those years. Through the years, as the family grew, the house was enlarged.
In the renovation process I preserved its central elements which represented it along the years and were an integral part of its form and content. Into those I weaved new content to accommodate it for its new lodgers – a cook and a designer.
As the walls and the ceiling were exposed, a unique visual form was created which led to a clear deliberation as to the proceedings of building the house. The oldest part, which belonged to the first unit, contains the kitchen, dining area and bedroom. The room at the entrance, which was a later addition, is now singled out by a "carpet" of grey floor tiles. On the other end of the house which contains the living room, wooden roof beams belonging to the original house had been exposed and preserved, as well as the old book-shelves, which were an important core of the original house.

This residence represents the dynamic collaboration between artist and architect. The architectural experience seeks to unite the tactile warmth of earth and clay with the compositional elegance of craft. Against a textured canvas of linen and limestone, light is leveraged to bring dimension and life to the architecture on every level.
Through the radical embrace of nature, guests are greeted by a 16’ tall Australian Brachychiton tree as they enter the double-height entry. The home is organized around a large, outdoor courtyard which creates fluid continuity and access between the indoor and outdoors. Living room - coastal medium tone wood floor and brown floor living room idea in New York with white walls, a standard fireplace and a tile fireplace

The 722 Ash Street residence consists of a 1500 sf primary house with a contiguous 500 sf accessory dwelling. The project is set in the rich culture of North Lawrence, its rear property line abuts the Lawrence levee trail which runs for nine miles along the north bank of the Kansas River.
North Lawrence is known for its quality soil, large trees, curbless streets and random size parcels before it breaks into larger farms further from the urban center. It is built on the typical orthogonal grid of American development, but it represents the older growth of the city prior to urban planners and zoning regulations. The rumble of freight trains and farm trucks in the shadows of the towering grain elevators are only blocks away. It is home to many who enjoy being only a bridge crossing away from Lawrence’s vibrant downtown but are far enough away to maintain their independence from many of the restrictions on living near the historic district. They can work in their large gardens and toiling in their garages and shops in a manner more rural than urban.
The house on 722 Ash St. is imbued with the character of North Lawrence and the Levee Trail area. The design was inspired by the Midwestern farmstead vernacular of the region. These timeless vernacular qualities house all the accommodations necessary for modern, sustainable living. A unique feature of this house is the Accessory Dwelling Unit permitted in the zoning district. It is a small separate residence on the same lot that can be used for income property or for extended family members. It also supports the city of Lawrence’s goals of increased density close to downtown rather than continued sprawl into the countryside.
The buildings use technology and common-sense design to reduce the building’s footprint and assure the owners low energy use and costs. A 4.9 Kw solar collection system is located on the only south facing gable and the super insulated envelopes (r-62 roof and r-35 walls) of all three forms easily exceeds the standards. Studio 804 continues their long standing pattern of maintaining the highest level of sustainable design while remaining contextually sensitive to the surrounding community. This house, like every Studio 804 project since 2008, is USGBC LEED Platinum Certified.

In an area represented by diverse architectural character, this Net Zero Passive Home’s unique modern style stands out, yet blends flawlessly back into its setting.
This project is West Vancouver’s First Certified Passive House and first Net Zero Energy home in West Vancouver.
