The fact that this home is in a development called Providence now seems perfectly fitting. Chris, the owner, was merely considering the possibility of downsizing from a formal residence outside Atlanta when he happened on the small complex of luxury brownstones under construction in nearby Roswell. “I wandered into The Providence by chance and loved what I saw. The developer, his wife, and the agent were there and discussing how Cantoni was going to finish out one of the units, and so we all started talking,” Chris explains “They asked if I wanted to meet with the designer from Cantoni, and suggested I could customize the home as I saw fit, and that did it for me. I was sold.”
Cantoni was originally approached by Mike and Joy Walsh, of Lehigh Homes, to create a contemporary model home to be featured on the Roswell Woman’s Club home tour. “Since Chris bought the brownstone right after we agreed to do the design work,” Lorna Hunter recalls, “we brought him in on the meetings with the architects to help finalize the layout.” From selecting tile and counter tops, to designing the kitchen and baths, to the furniture, art and even linens—Cantoni was involved with every phase of the project. “This home really represents the complete range of design and staging services we offer at Cantoni,” says Lorna. “Rooms were reconfigured to allow for changes Chris found appealing, and every tile and doorknob was thoughtfully chosen to complete the overall look.”
Chris found an easy rapport with Lorna. “I have always been drawn to contemporary décor,” he explains, “ so Lorna and I hit it off immediately.” Among the custom design ideas the two conceived for the 2,600 sq. ft. 3/3 brownstone: creating a “wing wall” (open on both sides) to form a sitting area adjacent to the guest room
downstairs, removing the elevator to enhance a sense of openness while leaving the 3-story shaft as a unique focal point, and choosing to expand the height of windows on the third level to maximize the flow of natural light.
The Providence is ideally located near quaint shops, great restaurants, jogging trails and a scenic river—not to mention it’s just four miles from Chris’ office. The project represents the breadth and depth of Cantoni’s in-house creative resources, and proves again that GREAT DESIGN IS A WAY OF LIFE.

The use of two 'islands' one in as an oval and the other seen pictured as a kidney shape invoke the islands of Japan often stylized in some traditional Asian gardens. The use of succulents represent the plant life while keeping it very low water need for California's drought. The various uses of rock represent the land and the sea while framed as if a picture.

Camel Back in Black is the quintessential “mullet house,” which is the common name for a renovated historic home in the front (business) with a modern addition in the rear (party). In this case the existing structure was an early 20th century New Orleans Shotgun Duplex Home that was adapted to be shorter due to both site constraints and an existing carport addition, which was removed. The design strategy was to create a distinct new entry to the main unit of the home along the side of the property. This was achieved through a clear delineation of a modern massing of a second story addition (called a Camelback in New Orleans) with a roof that wraps to frame an exterior gate. The gate leads to a raised rear yard, which was filled in to be the same height as the main home to make it more of an extension of some of the public spaces rather than a small sunken pit, which can often be a lifeless space.
Many time you will see new Camelback additions in the city that take a more blended approach, but in this case because of the corner lot and the desire to create a prominent entry (along that side) a clear line is delineated between old and new. This was done intentionally to clearly represent the original form with appropriately renovate historic details true to the original, without creating a false sense of history through an addition that would have not represented a proportion that was standard for the time the original structure was built.
The existing home was the childhood dwelling of the owner, who inherited it years after it fell into disrepair. There was mold, rot and structural disrepair, but it was important to the owner that NFA preserved as much of the existing portions of the home as possible; so where there was flooring that could be preserved (and refinished) it was, where there were historic interior and exterior trim detailing that could be preserved it was and if not it was replicated in kind to the original. On the other hand, there were certain modern needs and updates that were desired and didn’t want the design to feel overly constrained by certain replicas of historic troupes. So, the addition and many of the interior finishes were intentionally contemporary.

The IL-1 Beta table was a unique and personalized birthday gift for renowned scientist Charles DInarello. We were commissioned to build a custom gift to represent three defining elements of his life; the refining of IL-1 Beta, one of his first monumental scientific achievements; his love of gardening and outdoor living spaces; and his enthusiasm for entertaining guests and fitting as many people around his table as possible (both figuratively and literally). We combined these three defining elements, and designed an outdoor table, a courtyard centerpiece, that would represent IL-1 Beta and enhance the scientist’s garden parties.
One of the most important and challenging design aspects of the IL-1Beta table were the pedestal legs. The recipient of this beautiful gift, Dr. Dinarello, loves entertaining guests, introducing strangers, and encouraging conversation, so we designed a table that could sit many and then add more. The pedestals are each composed of seven pieces of wood that had to be assembled in a precise order for strength, stability and beauty. The table stands delicately with just the tips of the pedestal legs touching the ground, like a couple mid-waltz, poised and strong and light on the dance floor.
