This project was driven by a commitment to sustainability and repurposing existing materials, seamlessly blending the old with the new while minimizing waste. The goal was to transform the backyard into a lush garden oasis with a low-water and low-maintenance design. Despite challenges posed by the property's proximity to the golf course and specific guidelines, a harmonious integration of desert plant life and low-water lush plants was achieved. Reusing existing materials and replacing natural grass with synthetic turf minimized water usage, while strategic plant placement utilized run-off water for sustainable irrigation. Navigating the constraints imposed by the Country Club, the project created a cohesive outdoor space and repurposed cobblestones to bridge the gap between the golf course and the rear of the property. This project achieved a balance between ecological consciousness and aesthetic beauty, allowing the garden oasis to coexist harmoniously with the golf course backdrop, providing the clients with a serene and vibrant landscape that aligns with their vision and respects the natural resources of the community.

The expansive grounds surrounding this residence, designed anew in the 1990’s while the home was undergoing renovation and expansion, had since fallen into neglect. The new owners envisioned a landscape of tailored spaces accommodating adult recreation and children’s play, gatherings of family and parties with friends. A studio building on the site was also in need of repurposing. The young couple were visionary and believed the studio could house a swimming pool and spa, with potential use year-round. A series of design iterations resolved all the clients program including formal courtyards with strong axis, a lawn for play, a place for basketball, tailored evergreen plantings, fountains, a fireplace, an outdoor kitchen and subdued lighting. The studio building was transformed into a natatorium with expansive amounts of glass added to open physically to the courtyards and visually to foliage surrounding the building.

Inspiration for a contemporary home design remodel in Denver

Alongside Jeff King & Company, Marina Blvd., won CotY 2016 National Winner of Landscape Design/Outdoor Living The project was to transform an existing flat roof and master bedroom suite floor into a dramatic deck with kitchen, dining and living areas leading to a stair to an upper deck for America’s Cup race viewing. The existing home is a 3-story 4,000 square foot Spanish Mission-style home built in the 1920’s and sits directly across from the St. Francis Yacht Club on Marina Boulevard in San Francisco – a prime location. No changes were possible for the historic façade and the new construction was to be out of view from the street, as much as possible. Going up the traditionally detailed stairway with decorative railing, you land at the third floor which becomes contemporary in style for the redesigned master bedroom suite, guest bath, sitting room and the roof deck. Large roof decks require careful attention to waterproofing and a Bison pedestal system was used to create a level deck surface and easy maintenance. Heavy ceramic tile pavers were interspersed with walkable in-floor skylights on the main deck with ipe wood floors at the upper deck and stairs. From both the master bedroom and the outdoor deck you can access a sitting room with large pocket or sliding doors to enclose it. If watching the fireworks on July 4th and it gets cold, people can move to the sitting room which has a fireplace to watch in a heated environment. The sitting room gas fireplace is surrounded by steel with a figured steel panel re-purposed from old sea pier metal that has been cleaned and sealed. A guest bath is adjacent to the master bath for guest use. A square recessed pattern tile was used to tie the old Spanish Mission-style feeling into the new more contemporary walls. In a large home that was short on storage, a large built-in armoire was built into the master bathroom for extra capacity. The project took two and a half years to complete including design and construction, in part due to historic reviews by the State of California.

The patio showcases a fireplace and conversation spot. The metal coffee table is topped with a small woven rug to protect and comfort feet when used as an ottoman. Mixing patterns makes this a fun "room".

In this kitchen, a new island was installed with Waypoint 540F Painted in Boulder color with Eternia Quartz in Snow White 3cm countertop. The wine bar is Homesite 3 cabinets that were custom painted to match existing cabinets. The original island countertop was repurposed and installed on the wine bar. The staircase balusters were replaced and painted.

Bedroom - contemporary bedroom idea in Denver

This dramatic remodel reinvigorated mid-century modern with an updated contemporary vibe after earlier updates had traditionalized the home. Completed in 2022, a significant reorganization of the space removed an existing fireplace and reallocated a living room to create a centrally located open-concept Kitchen and Dining Room. Dominating the kitchen is the spectacular emerald-toned glass cabinetry. Vivid and rich, the matte glass provides a depth and softness unmatched by painted cabinetry. Natural quartzite slabs wrap the waterfalled island and backsplashes, the unique graining provides interest without competing against the bold cabinetry. The home’s unique butterfly floorplan is reflected in the various angles incorporated into the architectural elements of the island, new walls and directing paths through offset openings. A series of interconnected beams, soffits, and columns impose spatial order and break the space into digestible visual components. The gas range is incorporated into a niche that contains a generous backbar, full-height backsplash and integrated spice storage. The island features brass inlays at slab breaks and a contrasting granite backchannel with an inconspicuous ‘scrubby-dubby cubby’ at one end for concealing cleaning supplies. The knee space is clad in the white oak planks of the floor, aligned and turned vertically as if folded. A distinctive black stained buffet with touch latch drawers is comprised of strips of cherry repurposed from paneling found in den. Matching woodwork is incorporated into the Foyer and wraps the Fireplace.

This client didn't have budget to build a fireplace but we used a small portable one with a faux fireplace surround. They had plenty of eclectic pieces they wanted to repurpose.
