The home had a three-level deck on the back of the house which was falling apart and from which there was no access via the kitchen or breakfast area. Additionally, water run-off was washing a large amount of dirt against the lower level basement door because there was little in terms of landscaping in place. The homeowners wanted to entertain in the backyard and have a good flow from the family room and kitchen onto the back patio. To help them achieve their goals, they hired Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes as their contractor. The first step in the renovation was to remove the entire back deck. Next, they designed and built an 18’x 45’ concrete foundation and slab; designed and built a tall retaining wall coved with flagstone to support the upper level patio; and installed a new patio with flagstone and brick pavers. The new patio level only requires two short steps to get inside of the house. A new set of French doors with sidelights replaces the old breakfast room window to improve the traffic pattern. A new set of French doors with ½ arched transom and two side windows connects the new gourmet kitchen to the back patio. Our client approached us while he was in the process of purchasing his ½ lot detached unit in Hermosa Beach. He was drawn to a design / build approach because although he has great design taste, as a busy professional he didn’t have the time or energy to manage every detail involved in a home remodel. The property had been used as a rental unit and was in need of TLC. By bringing us onto the project during the purchase we were able to help assess the true condition of the home. Built in 1976, the 894 sq. ft. home had extensive termite and dry rot damage from years of neglect. The project required us to reframe the home from the inside out. To design a space that your client will love you really need to spend time getting to know them. Our client enjoys entertaining small groups. He has a custom turntable and considers himself a mixologist. We opened up the space, space-planning for his custom turntable, to make it ideal for entertaining. The wood floor is reclaimed wood from manufacturing facilities. The reframing work also allowed us to make the roof a deck with an ocean view. Our client was a family with younger children that came to us through the recommendations of former customers. Their existing house had been remodeled by them 10 years earlier and was well-suited to the married couple. With the addition of two younger children, they realized that the house just didn’t function very well for their family. Fortunately, the husband and wife took their time thinking about what they wanted, and by the time they met with us, had their needs well laid out. We brought in local Architect, James Stroupe, and recommended him to the client as a collaborative professional who could help us achieve their goals. This proved to be the case. Jim quickly produced design drawings for them within six weeks that clearly reflected all of the client’s needs and preferences while at the same time dramatically re-creating the home in a beautiful contemporary design. The new home required a complete reconstruction of the existing house that left only one bathroom unaltered. New square footage was added at the lower level to expand and reconfigure the living area, while an entirely new upstairs wing was constructed to create space for a new master suite with views out toward the ocean. The entire roof was rebuilt, all new windows and interior doors were added and the full exterior received a new modern looking stucco finish. Stainless steel cable railings were added to the decks to create an updated look, and fine hardwood accents were used to pull the design together. Our efforts produced a new three bedroom, three bath home with a large and inviting ground floor patio area, wide open living areas on the first floor with new kitchen, bathroom and dining room. The Indian Wells Chef’s Kitchen was transformed from a 1980s traditional closed in architectural style by removing an existing support pillar from a previous expansion and island that separated the kitchen and dining room. The structural work required to create this open kitchen and now family room was engineered to extend the header at the location of the new custom maple Double French doors that open up to the rear yard patio and built-in BBQ. The more noticeable improvements include the 48” GE Monogram Professional Range and Commercial Hood together with the new 12’ Kitchen Island that serves as a seating area for 4 with a prep counter space including a Vegetable sink and a Boos Walnut End Grain Butcher Block, maple weathered grey cabinetry, and “ice white” granite countertop with a Manhattan Tribeca Mosaic backsplash. Saturday, May 30, 9:30 to 11:00am | Atlanta Restoration of the Goodrum House & Garden by Spencer Tunnell II and Matt Sussman of Tunnell + Tunnell Landscape Architecture (TTLA) A prominent central driveway punctuates the front lawn, guiding visitors toward the exquisitely restored house and inner grounds. Completed in 1932 and recently restored to its original period design, this English Regency-style home was designed by renowned architect Philip Trammell Shutze for May Patterson Goodrum, the widow of a wealthy Atlanta businessman. Originally built on five acres in the Buckhead neighborhood of north Atlanta, the stucco exterior and geometric design of the house and landscape emulates the grand architectural concepts popularized during the reign of King George IV in early 19th century England. Combining their professional expertise, the site’s architect and landscape architect worked closely throughout the restoration process, drawing on the home’s original design plans, historic photographs, and interviews with former neighbors to ensure that the project accurately reflected Shutze’s intent. An archaeological excavation and detailed paint analysis provided further insight. Restoring the property’s grounds required recreating lost elements of the period-style landscape, including stunning allées and large boxwood and perennial gardens framed by restored garden walls.
