A little over a year ago my retaining wall collapsed by the entrance to my house bringing down several tons of soil on to my property. Not exactly my finest hour but I was determined to see as an opportunity to redesign the entry way that I have been less than happy with since I got the house.
I wanted to build a structure together with a new wall I quickly learned it required foundation with cement caissons drilled all the way down to the bedrock. It also required 16 ft setbacks from the hillside. Neither was an option for me.
After much head scratching I found the shed building ordinance that is the same for the hills that it is for the flatlands. The basics of it is that everything less than 120 ft, has no plumbing and with electrical you can unplug is considered a 'Shed' in the City of Los Angeles.
A shed it is then.
This is lead me the excellent high-end prefab shed builders called Studio Shed. I combined their structure with luxury vinyl flooring from Amtico and the 606 Universal Shelving System from Vitsoe. All the interior I did myself with my power army called mom and dad.
I'm rather pleased with the result which has been dubbed the 'SheShed'

Freedom Showers supplies ADA compliant as well as Accessible showers and accessories.
This 5 piece shower is easy to install and meet commercial code requirements.
The acrylic walls are fully backed and reinforced.
The shower bench folds up out of the way.

The back of the home faces Skaneateles Lake and has a raised deck constructed with DuraLife decking and glass panels to optimize the view. Building code requires that deck rails be at eye level when a person is seated. Since solid rails would obstruct the view for a person seated in a wheelchair, a special impact resistant safety glass railing was used with the glass panels. There is a lower level exit from the home to a pathway that leads to the dock. Windows and glass doors were strategically installed to provide a view of the lake from the interior.

"Aging-in-Place in Style" is the story of a senior couple nearing retirement and wanting to remodel their main bathroom for aesthetics, functionality, and safety.
Like most homeowners who remodel, figuring out the budget is a big challenge that requires fully transparent collaboration among all parties. It also takes patience, thoughtfulness, and, well, as they put it "A pretty good sense of humor."
This particular remodel came with an even bigger challenge—a large built-in Jacuzzi-type tub positioned in a square space, which is notoriously difficult to design around. We had one of our top designers on it, however, and he came through in style, creating a very efficient, bright universal design to accommodate these homeowners now and far into the future.

This section is a new gable dormer that adds much-needed volume to this attic. The challenge when adding a dormer is maintaining structural support of the ridge beam. In this case, given the age of the house, finding point loads to support the existing beam would have created unknown conditions and required renovation work on the first and basement levels. The engineer's solution was to create an A-frame girder supported on existing exterior bearing walls. The new gable dormer is tied into this girder.

The Crystal Keyline island, range-hood and accessible cooktop area are focal points, finished in Antique Ivory w/Brown Highlights, that contrast nicely with Crystal Keyline Toasted Rye w/Brown Highlights cabinetry. The Bayfield door style unifies the design.
Typhoon Bordeaux granite countertops are layered in staggered heights for added visual interest.
The on-set of a neuromuscular disorder was the basis for this custom kitchen and required the complete customization of this space to the specific needs of the client, as well as to his wife who does most the cooking on a daily basis. The layout was designed for the couple to be able to work together in the kitchen, or independently.
An accessible prep area next to the stove allows plenty of room for multiple cooks in the kitchen. Note the placement of the microwave is not only ideal for wheelchair accessibility, but eliminates potentially dangerous overhead lifting of hot or heavy containers.
Although largely dictated by the husband's need for accessibility, the universal design of this kitchen is also extremely friendly for a person of smaller stature (his wife!)
The couple feels at home in this kitchen yet, it’s not obvious that someone with physical limitations utilizes this space.

This custom built home was designed for a couple who were nearly retirement and caring for an elderly parent who required the use of a wheel chair. All of the spaces were designed with handicap accessibility, universal design, living-in-place and aging-in-place concepts in mind. The kitchen has both standing and seated prep areas, recessed knee space at the cooktop and bathroom sinks, raised washer and dryer, ergonomically placed appliances, wall oven, hidden microwave, wide openings and doors, easy maneuvering space and a perfect blend of private and public areas.
The Transitional design style blends modern and traditional elements in a balanced and pleasing way. An abundance of natural light supported by well designed artificial light sources keeps the home safe, pleasant and inviting.

AFIRE Modern times no longer favors the uniformity of objects and mass production. Faced with the globalization of manufactured objects, everyone wants to take control and create their own unique universes. The beauty and complexity of fire is part of this new lifestyle. Whether using remote-controlled ethanol inserts of ecological bio-fireplaces, the important is to design the style of your own home independently or, even better, with the help of an interior designer. Only one thing is definitely off-limits: the constraint of using complicated apparatus requiring hassle straight out of another time.

Our client required a Universal Design for a San Diego downtown master bathroom that was functional, safe, and comfortable. The client requested a design for her father who had disability challenges. The design encompassed a slide-in tub and a comfort height toilet with fold down balance bars on each side. The magnificent slide-in bathtub is guaranteed to bring back the pleasure of a peaceful bath once again. The interior designer, Marie Cairns, also designed the new bathroom to be vanity wheelchair accessible with plenty of storage. In addition a wall hung medicine cabinet was installed to provide additional storage.

I built this on my property for my aging father who has some health issues. Handicap accessibility was a factor in design. His dream has always been to try retire to a cabin in the woods. This is what he got.
It is a 1 bedroom, 1 bath with a great room. It is 600 sqft of AC space. The footprint is 40' x 26' overall.
The site was the former home of our pig pen. I only had to take 1 tree to make this work and I planted 3 in its place. The axis is set from root ball to root ball. The rear center is aligned with mean sunset and is visible across a wetland.
The goal was to make the home feel like it was floating in the palms. The geometry had to simple and I didn't want it feeling heavy on the land so I cantilevered the structure beyond exposed foundation walls. My barn is nearby and it features old 1950's "S" corrugated metal panel walls. I used the same panel profile for my siding. I ran it vertical to match the barn, but also to balance the length of the structure and stretch the high point into the canopy, visually. The wood is all Southern Yellow Pine. This material came from clearing at the Babcock Ranch Development site. I ran it through the structure, end to end and horizontally, to create a seamless feel and to stretch the space. It worked. It feels MUCH bigger than it is.
I milled the material to specific sizes in specific areas to create precise alignments. Floor starters align with base. Wall tops adjoin ceiling starters to create the illusion of a seamless board. All light fixtures, HVAC supports, cabinets, switches, outlets, are set specifically to wood joints. The front and rear porch wood has three different milling profiles so the hypotenuse on the ceilings, align with the walls, and yield an aligned deck board below. Yes, I over did it. It is spectacular in its detailing. That's the benefit of small spaces.
Concrete counters and IKEA cabinets round out the conversation.
For those who cannot live tiny, I offer the Tiny-ish House.

This Waukesha bathroom remodel was unique because the homeowner needed wheelchair accessibility. We designed a beautiful master bathroom and met the client’s ADA bathroom requirements.
Original Space
The old bathroom layout was not functional or safe. The client could not get in and out of the shower or maneuver around the vanity or toilet. The goal of this project was ADA accessibility.
ADA Bathroom Requirements
All elements of this bathroom and shower were discussed and planned. Every element of this Waukesha master bathroom is designed to meet the unique needs of the client. Designing an ADA bathroom requires thoughtful consideration of showering needs.
Open Floor Plan – A more open floor plan allows for the rotation of the wheelchair. A 5-foot turning radius allows the wheelchair full access to the space.
Doorways – Sliding barn doors open with minimal force. The doorways are 36” to accommodate a wheelchair.
Curbless Shower – To create an ADA shower, we raised the sub floor level in the bedroom. There is a small rise at the bedroom door and the bathroom door. There is a seamless transition to the shower from the bathroom tile floor.
Grab Bars – Decorative grab bars were installed in the shower, next to the toilet and next to the sink (towel bar).
Handheld Showerhead – The handheld Delta Palm Shower slips over the hand for easy showering.
Shower Shelves – The shower storage shelves are minimalistic and function as handhold points.
Non-Slip Surface – Small herringbone ceramic tile on the shower floor prevents slipping.
ADA Vanity – We designed and installed a wheelchair accessible bathroom vanity. It has clearance under the cabinet and insulated pipes.
Lever Faucet – The faucet is offset so the client could reach it easier. We installed a lever operated faucet that is easy to turn on/off.
Integrated Counter/Sink – The solid surface counter and sink is durable and easy to clean.
ADA Toilet – The client requested a bidet toilet with a self opening and closing lid. ADA bathroom requirements for toilets specify a taller height and more clearance.
Heated Floors – WarmlyYours heated floors add comfort to this beautiful space.
Linen Cabinet – A custom linen cabinet stores the homeowners towels and toiletries.
Style
The design of this bathroom is light and airy with neutral tile and simple patterns. The cabinetry matches the existing oak woodwork throughout the home.
