Designer Dawn Johns specified Norcraft Cabinetry’s Cottage Maple door style in White for the bathroom vanity and wall cabinet above the toilet for additional storage. The beadboard door style is a staple design piece for any coastal design and brings some subtle texture to the space. A Recycled Glass Surface from Curava in the color Savaii was selected for the vanity countertop and was a unique way to include natural elements that resemble the look of sea glass into this coastal space. The vanity was complete with the Ribbon & Reed Hardware in Pewter Antique from Top Knobs Hardware. Mikonos 12x24 tile in Coral from Tesoro was used for the bathroom floor as well as the shower walls in a vertical layout. The shower was complete with a recessed niche and a frameless glass hinge door. Coastal décor was used to complete the space such as a rustic framed mirror and nautical inspired light fixture.

Melanie's inspiration for this luxurious room was an artfully crafted Tresserra Bolero pool table that was built for recreation with incredible style and function, exemplifying the sophisticated and sporty Hampton resident. Our firm created a glamorous entertainment space where family and friends can get away and spend time together playing backgammon, chess, billiards and even a simple game of tic tac toe. A Guy Stanley Monopoly board painting greets you as you enter the room, a nod to the past. We used grass cloth wallpaper to create warmth, intimacy and texture, bringing a bit of nature into the space. The deep velvet custom sofa sits in front of a custom mirrored media cabinet, which sits below a large TV. The cabinet and TV are flanked by Carl Springer stools from Todd Merrill with glamorous Bakalowitz inspired sconces above. The Arteriors Indogene chandelier illuminates the metallic hand painted ceiling, which we designed to resemble the star filled Hamptons sky. A Jane Martin diptique ties in the room's color palette and is complemented by the whimsical sculptures that stand on either side. One ironically named "Road Runner" is also a reference to the past. A yellow lollipop sculpture by Desirez Obtain Cherish sits adjacent to an art-inspired fireplace. Melanie Roy Design created a modern, high style recreation space for family and friends to relax and spend time together in an elegant, comfortable space that complements the chic Hamptons lifestyle, showing that family fun can be stylish whether in the country or the city. The Illuminated Room A new client in Burr Ridge, Illinois, asked me to design his living room and said he wanted a unique design. He further said he wanted me to create “the WOW! factor” with a design that I’ve never done for another client. Exciting challenge for a designer, right? Well, after giving it some thought, I decided to create “sculptural” window treatments for the five windows in the room. The room has a curved wall with a faux finish with honey, gold, gray and a hint of golden green. That was my base for a color scheme. We selected furniture with contemporary styling, in black and gray with a hint of rust/copper. The coffee table was very interesting! It’s oval-shaped and finished in copper, resembling a smooth pebble. Deep thought was given to the design of the five tall, slender all windows. I needed to create a design to enhance the overall look of the room and the play up the height of the windows. I found this amazing fabric that was perfect in terms of colors and texture. The background was in blackened, antiqued silver with woven lines of copper that stretched up and down across the length of the fabric. Perfect choice! I also found an amazing trim with diamond stones woven in rows across the band, which added amazing elegance and style. So, I thought to myself, “Why not create curved cornices to echo the curved wall?” I imagined covering the cornices with that perfect metallic fabric and using the diamond-covered trim as a decorative element to add sparkle and draw the eyes up to enhance the height. Another thought: “Why not install LED lights within the cornices to illuminate the ceiling, and install drapery sheers under the cornices?” Voila! Unique idea, I hadn’t done this before, and I was positive that my client would love it! As expected, the client approved. Construction and installation took 12 weeks, a little longer than average; the delay was because I had to find the perfect electrician to make my design come to life. I found the perfect light fixture for the narrow wall that one sees when entering the room. It looks Like a shield with the light right in the center. Unique choice for a unique room! The room is not quite complete. We need an area rug, side tables, and accessories. I will post photos of the room when we have selected the right elements to complete the look. The following photos show the room as it is now:

AM2245 ROCK DROP LIGHT DESCRIPTION: The light installation is a chandelier with deliciously unique lights that celebrate the fascinating nature of the rock, where no rock is the same as the next. When you see a light sculpture designed to increase the visual appeal of a room and define its luminous character, you stop on your way to admire it. The word "crystal" comes from Ancient Greek and it means ice which is, similar to real crystal, characterized by purity, clarity, and coolness. Greeks were always surprised when ordinary water turned into "rock". But they soon discovered that something resembling ice can be found deep in the mountains – they found colorless, pure, transparent, and cold mono-crystals of silicon dioxide. The Greek word for ice was quickly transferred to this sought-after material and since then these colorless silica mono-crystals are known as rock crystal or quartz. However, people were fascinated by rock crystal even before the Greek civilization; it can be even said that it is an important part of human history. It is astonishing how quickly ancient civilizations learned to cut rock crystal using sand, a material of equal hardness. Rock crystal was used to make jewelry, luxury items for the upper classes, and also items related to magic. This led to the perception of crystal as something noble and mysterious. Inspiration for a large modern gender-neutral carpeted reach-in closet remodel in New York with flat-panel cabinets and white cabinets

The major kitchen renovation of this old country farmhouse was a task of love, one that had been planned for many years by these Barrington seasoned homeowners. After interviewing no less than five companies, the homeowners chose the design team at Advance Design Studio to make the transformation they had long planned for. “They had an understanding of the right design for the space almost from the instant they walked in the room”, says Sharon Scott of the design team of Nicole Ryan at Todd Jurs at Advance Design Studio. “They were the only designers who laid out ideas in the first meeting at the house that we really loved”, she says. “It was obvious that they understood the house, and understood us - and from then on the decision to hire them literally made itself”. The original kitchen had a dividing “wall” of cabinetry…that made the rather large space seem very small, and cut off the kitchen from the eating area that has a beautiful garden view completely hidden from the main kitchen. Circulation was poor, leaving family members on top of one another when entertaining family and friends. The new kitchen design nearly doubles the kitchen size within the original space; opening it up completely and enjoying an expansive island containing a new Kohler Whitehaven Smart Divide farm sink, a dishwasher, and pull out double trash receptacle. The great new gathering space accommodates four pull out stools beckoning grandchildren and friends alike. Removing the range from the island and relocating it to create a dramatic “feature” wall, completely out of the way of guests; it is now crowned with a beautiful completely customized wood hood designed to ventilate much more efficiently than the original island range containing a limited downdraft system. The much more efficient use of the space after removing a pantry closet made way for a fully functional “tall wall” housing a double oven and refrigerator, out of the way of guests. Removing the restrictive cabinetry wall now allowed for an expansive floor to ceiling pantry cabinet with full extension pull out shelving, and an elegant display area complete with a beautiful furniture detailed buffet. Fitting perfectly into the farmhouse charm of the old estate, Medallion Silver Lancaster cabinetry was chosen in a soft white Maple Divinity paint finish lining the perimeter. The stunning island hints to this old home’s past with Medallion Gold’s Maple Devonshire style graced with a Carriage Black Heirloom painted finish. The rubbed off black paint finish reveals the soft wood tones beneath, mimicking furniture you’d see in your grandmother’s home that has lovingly been polished for years to reveal a soft, subtly rubbed-off sheen. Counter tops reverse contrast with perimeter tops of black “Raven” granite possessing a subtle honed finish, and a shift to Quartz Difinity Viareggio - resembling white Carrera marble on the island. A simple herringbone detail completes the decorative range wall, and subtle porcelain subway tiles grace the backsplash throughout. The design is finished off with crisp Thermador and Bosch stainless steel appliances, and bright brushed cup pull and handle combination hardware. A pull down Kohler Bellaria faucet makes cleanup a breeze, and soft under-cabinet LED lighting throughout makes every work surface shine softly, and highlights the cabinetry display area with grace. One special detail was created to make the dramatic ceiling transition to a vaulted area above the breakfast nook extra special. A tongue and groove solid wood ceiling was hung above, and a subtle greenish-grey distressed paint finish was hand developed on site by the talented crew, complementing the new kitchen with a completely unique surface that appears as if it’s been there for many, many years. It’s just one standout feature in the amazing new space that is sure to be in every conversation as newcomers enjoy the newest best hangout in this old home renewed! After 30 years of renovating homes, this now content homeowner sips a cup of tea enjoying her new garden view, and reminisces projects of past – and lastly reports their experience with Advance Design Studio culminating with their amazing new kitchen to be the most enjoyable and satisfying home experience yet.
