This unique home on edge of downtown Calgary is a longer term project we had the privilege to design and implement. We were involved early in the extensive renovation process to provide input on design elements and help resolve logistical issues on the site. Among the many elements in the garden a large water feature was desired, in part to help mask traffic noise, as well as numerous areas to entertain, relax, and explore. Both large and dry-pack Rundlestone was utilized along with stamped concrete for much of the hardscaping. The slope was manipulated to construct the water feature which includes numerous falls, a stream, pond and bio-filter. Stucco walls were constructed on part of the property and river-stone walls were reconstructed to match the existing walls from the previous development. Extensive plantings throughout the grounds highlight and accent the hardscape and were designed for four seasons of interest.

This warm, inviting kitchen remodel is located in Williamsville, NY! This customer wanted a more open layout so we took down a wall dividing her eat-in kitchen and the dining room, to free the space. Now the customer can see the entire length of their house when coming through the front door! A soft maple stain cabinet is complimented nicely by light tile floors and a graceful granite top. Remediate excessive moisture Although moisture can appear as condensation on the inside of basement walls and isn’t a difficult thing to resolve, serious water problems have their source outside the basement. Thus, inexpensive interior “fixes” such as sump pumps or dehumidifiers will mitigate seasonal dampness to a degree, but living spaces may still smell musty and be plagued by mold. Increasing sunlight and ventilation is always welcome, but to keep moisture from entering, you’ll need a solution that stops water before it gets through the basement walls.

Custom-built in the early eighties, this contemporary home was cloaked in all brown board siding with brown windows and a cumbersome street-facing carport. The current owners had raised their family there on property that borders serene conservation land. Now they were ready for a new, brighter exterior look that would include all new windows to take in the exquisite view, unobscured by the fog of failing window seals; new siding that wouldn’t be subject to woodpecker wear and tear; a refinished screen porch; a new garage to replace the undersized carport; and new entry access. On the interior, they wanted the new, fresh vibe to extend to the design of three renovated modern bathrooms. In response, KHS proposed black-framed windows throughout in simpler configurations; fiber-cement (and PVC) exterior cladding in three textures to differentiate functions and features; a unifying light-gray and white palette teamed with clear-finished mahogany/sapele to carry across the exterior as well as the bathroom renovations; a stream-lined screen porch with cable rails; a new shed-roofed garage to resolve the exterior massing; and a new covered walkway entrance delivering those arriving into a repurposed interior space. Once the overall design was resolved, the owners elected to complete the work in phases over several years. Phase 1 included renovating the powder room, guest bathroom, and primary bathroom, and refreshing the screen porch. See the reconceived modern bathrooms here on the KHS website. Next came constructing the new garage and entry, which on the interior included new floor tile and a new entry wall-paneling system to conceal electrical, solar, and security panels/controls. Phase III involved installing the rest of the new windows and completing the comprehensive new exterior cladding and palette to tie the earlier phases together. To cap it off, KHS worked with the owners to select new clean-lined furnishings for the living area in colors inspired by their coastal view.

I designed this custom built in desk and storage cabinetry inorder to meet all their needs. To the right bottom are laterial files and to the left bottom is a pull-out shelf which houses their printer/scanner. Since this is a small space, it is important to be able to tuck things away when not in use. Providing easily accessible pull-outs and drawers resolves this issue and prevents clutter, which hampers productivity.

In consideration of the bumpout and mantle, it was decided that cabinets should be slightly recessed behind it to accentuate its form. In doing so, it made it a challenge for the designer to fit in a range deep enough to accommodate for the deepest counter/cabinetry. To resolve this, the designer put in a curved hood. In doing so, it connects itself without issue to the top of the cabinets, while providing ample ventilation and coverage for the range below. Abstractly, it also acts a gesture to a canopy!
