Castle Building & RemodelingThis modern home, near Cedar Lake, built in 1900, was originally a corner store. A massive conversion transformed the home into a spacious, multi-level residence in the 1990’s.
However, the home’s lot was unusually steep and overgrown with vegetation. In addition, there were concerns about soil erosion and water intrusion to the house. The homeowners wanted to resolve these issues and create a much more useable outdoor area for family and pets.
Castle, in conjunction with Field Outdoor Spaces, designed and built a large deck area in the back yard of the home, which includes a detached screen porch and a bar & grill area under a cedar pergola.
The previous, small deck was demolished and the sliding door replaced with a window. A new glass sliding door was inserted along a perpendicular wall to connect the home’s interior kitchen to the backyard oasis.
The screen house doors are made from six custom screen panels, attached to a top mount, soft-close track. Inside the screen porch, a patio heater allows the family to enjoy this space much of the year.
Concrete was the material chosen for the outdoor countertops, to ensure it lasts several years in Minnesota’s always-changing climate.
Trex decking was used throughout, along with red cedar porch, pergola and privacy lattice detailing.
The front entry of the home was also updated to include a large, open porch with access to the newly landscaped yard. Cable railings from Loftus Iron add to the contemporary style of the home, including a gate feature at the top of the front steps to contain the family pets when they’re let out into the yard.

Lowcountry Custom Pool and SpaThe pool had plumbing and structural issues that we resolved through the following:
-All plumbing was pressure tested to find and repair all leaking pipes
-Pool shell was stripped of plaster and tile
-Decking was overlaid with new light walnut 3" bullnose coping around pool and spa edge
-Pool waterline tile is opalescent glass 1 x 2 arctic ice
-Pool interior finish was done with 3M Florida stucco, glass and quartz pool plaster.
-Entire pool equipment set was upgraded using Zodiac, Jandy Pool Systems
-Variable speed energy efficient pumps
Tutto InteriorsThe Renovation of this home held a host of issues to resolve. The original fireplace was awkward and the ceiling was very complex. The original fireplace concept was designed to use a 3-sided fireplace to divide two rooms which became the focal point of the Great Room.
For this particular floor plan since the Great Room was open to the rest of the main floor a sectional was the perfect choice to ground the space. It did just that! Although it is an open concept the floor plan creates a comfortable cozy space.

The bathroom required subfloor repairs, which allowed us to remove the oversized, outdated spa tub and design a brand-new layout featuring a full standing shower/tub combination with built-in shelving for better function and storage. Throughout the home, we installed new LVP flooring, refreshed the interiors with new paint, and completed repairs to the existing deck — creating an inviting outdoor space to enjoy the private lake views.

Michelle's InteriorsLack of symmetry in this angled, open floor plan kitchen was the key challenge. The L-shaped island, which I lined up with two of the walls, resolved the issue. The renewable Red Grandis Wood cabinets (eucalyptus) are finished in weathered gray along the perimeter and creamy white on the island. I provided layers of lighting, including the oversized drum chandelier above the table, which is enclosed on the bottom so that the bulbs are not visible. I also chose a branch chandlier above the island workspace and recessed can lights on the ceiling for whole-room illumination.
