Resource Sustainability - Photos & Ideas

"The quiet elegance of the Ventura nightstand is all about celebrating the beautiful grain of solid Amber bamboo. The modern style and simple clean lines of the nightstand show off the rich variety of Amber’s colors and feature a craftsman-built frame made from solid bamboo, resting on legs that lift the nightstand up off the floor. The solid bamboo drawer displays rich bamboo grain uninterrupted by hardware, with the drawer beautifully finished inside and out. The Ventura nightstand drawer is built using English dovetail joinery, with a soft touch latch for easy opening and closing. Sustainable and earth friendly, Amber is not a surface stain, the color is the result of an innovative new process using earth friendly heat and steam, to entirely transform the solid bamboo material into Amber’s deep color. Each Ventura nightstand is beautifully finished on all four sides and ships professionally assembled. Discover the expert craftsmanship packed into each piece of Greenington bamboo furniture. Greenington furniture is made using an earth friendly, renewable resource harvested from fully sustainable and rapidly growing forests. House of Earth and Sky, Aidlin Darling Design

American Institute of Architects, San Francisco

This sustainable home by Aidlin Darling Design celebrates the intersection of earth and sky. One enters below grade and ascends vertically through the ground to arrive in a series of glass pavilions, anchored by rammed earth walls and sheltered under kite-like floating roofs. Ecological responsibility guided the design of this LEED-Platinum, Net Zero Energy home. Earth walls utilize on-site material resources and provide thermal mass. Lightweight roof planes orient photovoltaics toward the sun, guide rainwater to cisterns, and provide shade through calibrated overhangs. Photo courtesy of Aidlin Darling Design

Asbury Park Condos

Resource Furniture

In the beach-side town of Asbury Park, New Jersey, stands Palomino Blackwing, a newly renovated 1920s Art Deco building. Now home to 23 modern duplex apartments, the building was designed with sustainable living in mind. Rather than seeking more space, the ideal design was shifted to using space ingeniously. Some highlights of each unit include: The Atoll 000 sofa/wall bed system transforms the living room into a guest bedroom for two when needed. A Lollisoft bunk bed system with a desk, which allows the downstairs flex space to function in multiple ways as needed: a home office/work space, lounge, or bedroom for two. The two steel frame, single beds easily fold down and comfortably accommodate two children or adults. Goliath transforming Console/Dining Table eliminates the need for a separate dining room, yet can easily accommodate up to 10 people. Folding Pocket Chairs that are less than 1” deep when closed; 8 chairs are stored on a rack less than 5.5” deep and hung on the wall above the Goliath.

California Coastal Master Suite Remodel

LIVDEN Designs

Lisa Rossman, co-owner of Huntington Beach design firm LL Design Co, reached out to us right after our launch in March 2020. She needed tile options for her client—a local homeowner embarking on an ambitious, complete master suite remodel. We were delighted to connect with Rossman and rushed to send over a few of our favorite samples, so her client had some chic and sustainable tiles to choose from. Her client went back and forth on which tile sample to select, but eventually landed on the stylish STELLA 5-Flower tile in the colorway Fog on our recycled 12x12 Polar Ice Terrazzo. One of the added benefits of this tile—and all LIVDEN tiles for that matter—is its tile body type. LL Design Co’s client selected the STELLA tile on our 12x12 Polar Ice Terrazzo, which is made from recycled materials and produced by manufacturers committed to preserving our planet’s resources.

Organic Mill Valley

Ann Lowengart Interiors

The three-level Mediterranean revival home started as a 1930s summer cottage that expanded downward and upward over time. We used a clean, crisp white wall plaster with bronze hardware throughout the interiors to give the house continuity. A neutral color palette and minimalist furnishings create a sense of calm restraint. Subtle and nuanced textures and variations in tints add visual interest. The stair risers from the living room to the primary suite are hand-painted terra cotta tile in gray and off-white. We used the same tile resource in the kitchen for the island's toe kick.
