Our inspiration for this home was an updated and refined approach to Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Prairie-style”; one that responds well to the harsh Central Texas heat. By DESIGN we achieved soft balanced and glare-free daylighting, comfortable temperatures via passive solar control measures, energy efficiency without reliance on maintenance-intensive Green “gizmos” and lower exterior maintenance. The client’s desire for a healthy, comfortable and fun home to raise a young family and to accommodate extended visitor stays, while being environmentally responsible through “high performance” building attributes, was met. Harmonious response to the site’s micro-climate, excellent Indoor Air Quality, enhanced natural ventilation strategies, and an elegant bug-free semi-outdoor “living room” that connects one to the outdoors are a few examples of the architect’s approach to Green by Design that results in a home that exceeds the expectations of its owners. The quiet, formal landscape responds both to the architecture and the client’s desire for a restful garden space that pleases the eye and speaks softly to the senses.

The key design driver for the project was to create a simple but contemporary extension that responded to the existing dramatic topography in the property’s rear garden. The concept was to provide a single elegant form, cantilevering out into the tree canopies and over the landscape. Conceived as a house within the tree canopies the extension is clad in sweet chestnut which enhances the relationship to the surrounding mature trees. Large sliding glass panels link the inside spaces to its unique environment. Internally the design successfully resolves the Client’s brief to provide an open plan and fluid layout, that subtly defines distinct living and dining areas. The scheme was completed in April 2016

The design of this residence began as a collaboration between Alka Construction and Rush Dixon Architects to continue Fulton Neighborhood’s “unique modern living” approach to the built environment. The collective goal was to create a “lowcountry modern” aesthetic that responds to the site. Prior to the commencement of construction the current homeowner purchased the property; we were then able to customize the design to their priorities and preferences.

New brick garden pathways and regimented rectangular planting beds wrap the breakfast room addition. A small brick patio occurs at the junction of the two paths. A semi-circular planting bed responds to the axis formed by the breakfast room's gable and box-bay-window centerline.

The deck geometry responds to varied elements in the split-level house, including multiple rooflines, window/door heights, and a horizontal water-table midway up the main house wall. These elements set the locations for the transom, handrail, and roofline at the screened porch addition.

Our client’s modest, three-bedroom house occupies a beautiful, small site having views down the length of Lake Oswego. The design responded to their appreciation of Hawaiian Island/Pacific Rim architecture and to the strict limitation to construction imposed by local zoning.
