The Angelino ADU is a two-story ADU in Burbank, California, designed as a two-bedroom accessory dwelling unit that balances privacy, natural light, and efficient residential living on a constrained site. Positioned between two existing units, the project places a 1,000-square-foot upper-level residence above a generous three-car garage, creating a well-resolved living environment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a full kitchen. The design was shaped by the challenge of building alongside taller multifamily structures, where privacy, daylight, and ventilation all had to be carefully considered. Strategic window placement and thoughtfully located skylights bring natural light deep into the interior while maintaining a strong sense of seclusion. This approach also supports cross ventilation throughout the living spaces, contributing to a more comfortable and functional home. Rather than treating the ADU as a secondary structure, the project was designed as a complete residential environment with a clear emphasis on livability, efficiency, and contemporary use. The result is a thoughtfully planned Burbank accessory dwelling unit that responds to site constraints with practical spatial organization, natural light, and everyday comfort.

This dining table features a wide-plank butcher-block style top constructed from alternating strips of multiple wood species. The species present include a dense, dark-grained exotic wood alongside lighter, warm-toned domestic species, producing a strong visual rhythm of contrasting tones and grain patterns across the full surface. The table includes a leaf extension mechanism. Scope of Work: Surface Preparation - The tabletop was prepared through careful sanding across the full surface, working with the grain of multiple species simultaneously. Multi-species surfaces require particular attention during sanding as different species have varying hardness and respond differently to abrasion, requiring a measured approach to achieve a level, consistent surface across all materials. Finish Application - A clear finish was applied to protect the surface while preserving the full visual contrast and grain character of the different wood species. The finish strategy for a multi-species top prioritizes clarity and depth rather than color modification, allowing each species to read at its natural tone under the finish coat. Gray and cedar colored modern architectural panel siding alternate patterns on all facades of the house, accentuating the different volumes. These volumes are then capped off by low sloping metal panel roofs. Exposed steel beans and columns are utilized to create long spans of covered outdoor spaces that then easily recede into the backdrop of the landscape. The design of this modern home is in harmony with the site and landscape creating a warm welcoming feeling and one that conveys that the house belongs there.

Located on a wooded site, a single-story 1950s house with an awkward floor plan was strategically remodeled to provide living spaces that connect to the outdoors and respond to the needs of a young family. This home had undergone successive alterations over the years, resulting in a fragmented, confusing layout. With only minor changes to the footprint, the architects redesigned this midcentury home to blur the boundary between indoor living and the landscape beyond. The new design effects a dramatic change by reorganizing the space into linear zones, raising the roof in key places, and making two small additions. A concrete wall links a new music studio and detached garage to the main house, forming an entry court that welcomes visitors and screens the private bedroom spaces nearby. The entry is marked by a series of round skylights, while the living room has been opened up with taller ceilings, a new fireplace and walls of glass. A series of long colored boxes provides storage and utility spaces, while planar elements draw the eye through the house to the landscape beyond. Teak cabinets, blackened steel and Douglas fir contrast with more modest materials such as painted MDF panels, fiber-cement siding and painted gypsum wallboard. Good design must reflect the personality of the client. So when siblings purchased studios in Downtown by Philippe Starck, one of the first buildings to herald the revitalization of Manhattan’s Financial District, the aim was to create environments that were truly bespoke. The brother’s tastes jibed synchronously with the insouciant idea of France’s most popular prankster converting a building that once housed the buttoned-up offices of JP Morgan Chase. His collection of Takashi Murakami works, the gallery-like centerpiece of the main area, announces his boldness and flair up front, as do furnishings by Droog, Moooi and, of course Starck, as well as hide rugs and upholstery, and a predominantly red palette. His sister was after something soothing and discreet. So Axis Mundi responded with a neutrals and used glass to carve out a bedroom surrounded by drapes that transform it into a golden cocoon. Hide (albeit less flamboyantly applied) evokes a familial commonality, and built-in furniture and cabinetry optimize space restrictions inherent in studio apartments.
