The King’s Hill Residence is also known as the WR Mackenzie Residence and is on the National Register of Historic Places and located in the historic King’s Hill neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. The home is a classic architectural example of the Federal Style, designed by the prominent Portland architectural firm of the day, Whidden and Lewis. Prior to being placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1978, the house had undergone a significant two-story addition on it’s SW side and a few unfortunate interior renovations. The house felt dark, dreary and mostly disregarded on the interior. My client, relocating from Northern California, fell in love with Portland and had been looking for a home that was within walking distance of all of Portland’s finest amenities - Downtown, Northwest 23rd, the Pearl District and Washington Park. They purchased the home with the vision of lovingly restoring it while also respectfully renovating the interior to support the needs of a modern family. The house is approximately 6000 square feet with three stories of living space and a previously unfinished basement. The main level has a traditional formal Entry Foyer with flanking Dining Room and Living Room at the front of the house with a Library, Family Room, Kitchen and original Butler’s Pantry located on the west side of the main level. The second level includes a Master Suite, Sun Room, Dressing Room and two guest rooms with shared guest bath. The third level, originally the servant’s quarters, were mostly unfinished and in disrepair, as was the basement. With the client’s program and functional needs defined, Katy began the design process by studying a wide range of floor plan options for all three levels while also focussing on retaining, enhancing and also restoring the historic character and details of the home. Once the floor plans had been refined Katy, working closely with her client, designed, selected and specified the palette of interior materials, cabinetry, architectural details, lighting, hardware and windowcoverings throughout the home. All of the systems incuding HVAC, plumbing, electrical and structural were also replaced throughout the home. The house is currently under construction and set for completion Spring 2019. Katy Krider Interior Design collaborated with a talented and professional team of consultants including Olson and Jones Construction, Jeffrey Miller Architecture, Full Circa Restoration, Earl Levin Lighting Constultant, Westside Electric, Hood-McNees Mechanical, Heritage Woodcraft, Young and Son Woodworks, Joshua Durrand tilesetter, De LaTierra stone fabrication, Sundeleaf Painting, Kip’s Hardwood Flooring and The Shade Store.

This fantastic Travertine tiled kitchen floor was in a bad way. Not only had it not been treated to a proper clean and seal in a long while, but it has also suffered from natural pitting, leaving lots of little holes that damaged the overall appearance of the floor. Travertine is very aesthetic, but suffers from the drawback of being quite soft compared to other types of stone (typically it sits between 3-4 on the Moh’s scale of mineral hardness). The customer, who lives in the town of Sleaford a small Lincolnshire market town, was keen to have the situation remedied through a complete restoration. This would need to include small repairs, along with a deep clean and a fresh seal. My first job was to deep clean the whole area, which I did using a solution of Tile Doctor Pro Clean and clean water. Pro Clean is a strong alkaline product which has a long history of producing reliable results of a wide range of natural stone floors, including Travertine, Granite, Limestone, and Slate. I applied the solution to both the tiles and the grout lines, and proceeded to scrub it in using a scrubbing pad fitted to a rotary floor machine. This left the floor fresh and clean, but I would also need to restore the polish to the Travertine to really take its appearance to the next level. To do this I used the process known as burnishing, which essentially involves the consecutive application of different gritted pads to achieve a high quality polish on tiles. Our burnishing system, which consists of four pads, achieves fantastic results on high-end polished stone like Limestone, Marble and, of course, Travertine. I started by applying the Coarse grit burnishing pad, before gradually working my way through to the Medium, Fine, and finally Very Fine pads to achieve a brilliant shine and light reflection finish. To round off the first day of the restoration, I used a flexible matching filler to fill up any pitted holes present on the surface of the tiles. Following this, I installed a turbo dryer to make sure the floor would dry fully overnight, and be ready to seal the following day. The next day I returned to the property and proceeded to seal the Travertine tiles using several costs of Tile Doctor Colour Grow sealer to protect the tiles and also really enhance the natural colours in the stone. As an impregnating sealer, Colour Grow penetrates into the stone and fills its pores to safeguard it against ingrained dirt and stains from within. As you can see from the photographs, the combination of a deep clean, high quality polish and fresh seal really transformed the appearance of the floor from dull and lifeless to a really asset to the kitchen. This Italian marble gazebo was rescued from a ruble pile in Alabama where it had sat for 20 years before I brought it to Atlanta to restore. The marble had been stained by the dirt it had laid in for decades requiring the development of several customized cleaning processes to prevent further damage. After cleaning all the components, we poured a foundation and slab to build it on. the stones were delicate and very heavy 200 - 300 lbs each and had to be placed very precisely. to accomplish this, we built custom scaffolding and a custom gantry crane to place each stone. Then we restored the wrought Iron work and installed it on top tying all the components together. where it will stand for decades of garden tours.

The Mediterranean mixed with Pueblo styles fit with the "Old West" theme that was popular in the 1920's and '30's in Scottsdale. In the process of putting the house on the National Register, Julia Miner (architect and owner) discovered several neighboring adobe houses that would have been visible in what was then an empty desert landscape. The house was unique in its two story design, with a roof-top sleeping porch off each bedroom, punctuated by a dove cote at the far end.
