This kitchen remodel was designed by Phil Rudick, Architect of Urban Kitchens + Baths, Austin, Texas. The original kitchen was built with a boomerang shaped peninsula which severely restricted traffic flow and only allowed for a small island. one long wall was totally underutilized, and no thought was given to storage and accessibility. We wanted to redesign the space to maximize it's potential. The redesigned kitchen space features a proper work triangle where the areas at the triangle points were fully developed for food prep, cooking and cleanup. The new large island offers seating thanks to a graceful granite counter top overhang, and the bank of tall pantry cabinets is outfitted with mobile full extension self/soft close shelves.

This is an existing cabin on Lake Owen in Northern Wisconsin that has went through an earlier addition in the 1960s. The cabin was in need of overall renovation and their was a desire to expand in order to fit the expanded family that treks to the north woods for summer and winter fun. Due to zoning restriction, the footprint could not be altered except for a 90 square foot addition to create a formal entry off the driveway. Because of the restrictions on lateral expansion, the addition had to be vertical. The solution to create the different spaces required by the owners was to utilize a saltbox building form to simplify the roof lines and unify the garage with the rest of the home. The main living is located on the ground floor along with the Primary Bedroom suite. The rest of the bedrooms along with an office, gym and Japanese style spa-like bathroom are located on the second floor. Above the garage space is a quilting room, and the attic of the main home is a usable loft space with access from a spiral staircase. A combination of lap siding and shingle siding is used on the exterior of the building as a nod to the vernacular style of the saltbox home. Cedar slats and accents are used throughout to bring in warmth, and a stone base helps protect the exterior from snow in the winter and ground the structure.

A flood inspired the owners of this 1980’s home in Ocean Ranch to update and minimize. Our restriction was that the homeowners did not want to use any color, so we needed to create a harmonious balance with the contemporary architecture using a palette of neutrals. We opted for a “soft contemporary” feeling using moss green, pale green, soft brown, dark beige, and cream alongside dark wood in some rooms and pale driftwood in others. Texture, rather than pattern, creates visual interest in the rooms. Organic materials mixed with dark bronze metal details add a natural touch. Designing the fireplace was a meticulous process due to the strict fire codes surrounding wood-burning fireplaces – plus the clients wanted an elevator for firewood retrieval. Additionally, the clients requested a very custom wood access detail, requiring careful coordination among the elevator manufacturer, builder, millworker and our design team. Although we aimed for a traditional wood mantle over the fireplace, we faced restrictions that led us to collaborate with Moda Concrete Studio, which crafted a poured concrete mantle that beautifully mimics the look and texture of wood.

A Gilmans Kitchens and Baths - Design Build Project (REMMIES Award Winning Kitchen) The original kitchen lacked counter space and seating for the homeowners and their family and friends. It was important for the homeowners to utilize every inch of usable space for storage, function and entertaining, so many organizational inserts were used in the kitchen design. Bamboo cabinets, cork flooring and neolith countertops were used in the design. A large wooden staircase obstructed the view of the compact kitchen and made the space feel tight and restricted. The stairs were converted into a glass staircase and larger windows were installed to give the space a more spacious look and feel. It also allowed easier access in and out of the home into the backyard for entertaining.
