When the Gimbels department store chain closed in 1986, many of its selling floors were converted into luxury apartments, including those of this branch at 86th Street and Lexington Avenue. The retailer’s soaring ceilings allowed Axis Mundi to create bedroom mezzanine spaces overlooking the living and dining rooms. Defining them with translucent glass welcomed natural light while retaining privacy. Downstairs, spaces bleed one into another, their basic monochromatic black-and-white palette acting as a unifying leitmotif. Yet each space feels distinct, with its own programmatic purpose, a feat largely achieved by varying floor and wall treatments—a graphic tile pattern in the entry, a red wall in the hall leading to the master suite, a colorful area rug in the living room. In the retailer’s heyday, the then-common saying, “Would Macy’s tell Gimbels?” implied the strategies the competitors kept from each other to gain the upper hand. Here, a structure iconic in its day also conceals something: a handsome, wholly contemporary repurposing that represents just the sort of innovation that made Gimbels the celebrated name that it was.

This is our newest addition to our industrial retail fixtures. This modern shelving unit is adorned in riveted rounded elements that give it that vintage turn of the century look. This piece was built with four total shelves made of solid, heavy gauge steel, but can be made with two, three or any number you would like. The shelves could be made with any of our beautiful reclaimed woods you see on any of our other pieces, or new wood stained any color you prefer. The durable shelving has been evenly spaced (approximately 17″ apart) but can be built with any spacing needed for what may be stored on the shelves. The frame has been painted black but can be left raw or painted any color. The overall dimensions of this retail display are 48” W x 24” D x 62.5” H, but it can be made any size you would like to accommodate the size of your shop or home. This piece has been made mobile by adding rugged casters to the base, and it can be made with larger casters, smaller, hidden casters or straight legs. **The spacing of the shelves and the overall number needed will affect the overall height of the piece. This piece is our modern industrial retail cabinet and shelving unit. The sleek design could fit any modern boutique or vintage style retail setting. When used as a retail fixture, the small footprint does not take up valuable real estate in your establishment! It is handmade by us and can be made in any size or configuration imaginable. The lower cabinet area measures 24” W x 27 ¾” D x 27 ¾” H and is ordained with vintage industrial rivets. We have treated the sides and doors of the piece with a chemical patina that gives it its neutral dark color that matches any décor. The doors could be made with a mesh face or one of our beautiful reclaimed woods. Behind the doors is a fixed center shelf, but it could be made with a removable shelf, none at all or a vertical partition. Locks could also be installed to keep your belongings safe. The upper hutch has been designed with three removable shelves to display your wares, but more could be added. The hutch measures 24” W x 14 3/8” D x 54 ¼” H. The shelves are spaced at 12 ¾” and could also be made fixed or adjustable. The sides of the hutch are constructed of the same durable steel, but could be made with new or reclaimed wood (stained any color you like), or mesh for more visibility. Doors could also be added to the hutch to make it a cabinet area, with options including solid steel, mesh, and glass. The back of the unit is decorative, so it could be used as the centerpiece of your retail store. The back paneling is solid steel, but holes could be made in the back at no additional charge to accommodate power cords for LED lighting. This unit is made with straight legs but could be outfitted with casters for a mobile industrial retail fixture that can continue to adapt with the dynamic of your establishment. Creature’s Plants + Coffee is a 12,000-square-foot ground-up retail café and greenhouse project in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, designed as a layered commercial environment that brings together plant retail, specialty coffee, and outdoor gathering within a single cohesive destination. The project is organized around a series of distinct yet connected zones, including a 50-foot greenhouse, specialty coffee bar, curated retail areas, indoor and outdoor plant displays, and generous exterior seating set within lush landscaping. Rather than functioning as a single-purpose storefront, the space was conceived as an immersive retail and hospitality environment where shopping, dining, and informal community use could coexist naturally. This project reflects experience in ground-up commercial design, retail architecture, café design, greenhouse environments, and outdoor-oriented planning. The result is a design-forward destination that balances circulation, planting, retail display, and food-and-beverage use while creating a warm, inviting setting for everyday use in Northeast Los Angeles.
