The only departure from our clean modern scheme is found in the dressing room where the client was looking for a more dressed up feminine feel but we kept a thread of grey consistent even in this more vivid colour scheme. Designing the fireplace was a meticulous process due to the strict fire codes surrounding wood-burning fireplaces – plus the clients wanted an elevator for firewood retrieval. Additionally, the clients requested a very custom wood access detail, requiring careful coordination among the elevator manufacturer, builder, millworker and our design team. Although we aimed for a traditional wood mantle over the fireplace, we faced restrictions that led us to collaborate with Moda Concrete Studio, which crafted a poured concrete mantle that beautifully mimics the look and texture of wood.

The removal of some of the other walls allowed for the addition of the wet bar accented by a floral pattern back-splash. Now family and guests don't need to go back upstairs to the kitchen to put together some refreshments. Instead they can use the black walnut wood counter top to organize the plates, utensils, and napkins retrieved from the white custom cabinetry and pull out cold beverages from the stainless steel built-in cooler. The addition of strategic, recessed lighting created a bright atmosphere without the worry of hitting one's head on any hanging light fixtures. To keep the balance of child-friendly area and charming entertainment space, vinyl flooring was installed in order to give the look of hardwood flooring but be easier to clean and maintain. With some well-thought out planning and intuitive insight, this finished basement was transformed into a charming multi-use living space.

For many of us, our mudroom is often the first place we enter when arriving home. For our clients, a family of four with 2 young children, the mudroom had to be well designed with ample storage and an efficient lay-out. A combination of closed door and open shelving provides an abundance of storage and hanging space to house everything from boots, shoes, coats and miscellaneous gear. Ample shelving provides space for baskets of varying sizes to corral a plethora of smaller items. A generous cushioned bench for and decorative deer hooks installed above it for those easy to access items allows the family to hang and organize things and still have a space that looks clean and organized. Personal storage lockers with screen doors also provide a separated space for each person so that things can be easily stored, found and retrieved.

The outdoor spaces function as an extension of the house and support the family’s casual, sports-oriented lifestyle. The design, for a family of seven, provides spaces for individual privacy and family gatherings. The design challenge was to incorporate a number of sustainable features into the design. The south-facing roof is integrated with a 5-kilowatt photovoltaic system, generating electricity for the home and furnishing emergency backup power. The heating is exclusively radiant with high efficiency boilers partially burning biofuel. Measures taken to produce an efficient building envelope include a drainage plane behind the siding, spray foam insulation, and high performance, insulated window glass.

As we move into the 21st century, more and more people are moving away from the stove/cooktop combination and adopting a separate, stacked oven with a separate cooktop. This allows for easier access to the ovens with less bending down and lifting of hot objects, but also allows for extra storage under the cooktop. This client decided on deep drawers instead of doors, which allows her to store and retrieve her pots and pans with much more ease than having to cram everything into a shelf. Tabitha Stephens
