The brief from the owners was loud and clear – they wanted an industrial, organic aesthetic with lots of steel and easy-clean, robust surfaces. An entertainer’s kitchen with a good connection to the barbecue deck was high on their list of priorities. They were also keen to display ornaments and plants, so some shelving with LED lighting was desirable. The designer says, although the existing kitchen was a high-end kitchen, it was visually overpowering and it wasn’t practical, with bench space around the cooking centre greatly compromised. “The kitchen was quite congested – it didn’t have a good flow.” However, the biggest challenge was the awkward shape, which was determined by the contemporary architecture. “When I first saw it, I had to leave it for a week as it was quite overwhelming with all the corners and angles. And it’s true, sometimes the best ideas come to you in the middle of the night.” The family had a system in place that worked well, and therefore they had very specific ideas on where they wanted two of the main working centres. “The clean-up centre with a large sink, DishDrawers, bins and a stainless steel bench top was to be located in the scullery, with a smaller secondary sink located out in the main kitchen for preparation.”

The goal for the Levo was to create a bedside wall fixture with great task lighting articulation that was intuitive enough to be used without prior knowledge of the fixture - all the while making it slender, sexy, and very robust.

This 1,000ft² recording and production studio, built in 2021 for producer couple Latifah Alattas and Lucas Morton, was designed as a fully custom creative environment that supports writing, mixing, and collaboration at the highest level. Both Latifah and Lucas are multi-instrumentalists, engineers, and mixers, and the studio reflects the full range of their workflows—visually inspiring, technically precise, and intuitive in every room. The facility was built from the ground up with a strong emphasis on architectural acoustics and plug-and-play connectivity. The layout includes two Control Rooms, multiple isolation booths, and shared common spaces, all tied together with seamless audio integration. No matter where you are in the studio, routing, monitoring, and communication remain effortless and consistent. Behind the aesthetic, the acoustic design is exceptionally robust. Six independent floating-floor systems support the suites, ensuring each room operates with minimal sound transmission. Tailored sound-reducing wall assemblies, full-lite doors, engineered window systems, and intentional treatment plans deliver clarity, isolation, and precision for tracking and mixing. Each space is mechanically decoupled, allowing multiple rooms to run simultaneously without compromise. For monitoring, both Latifah and Lucas chose Genelec “The Ones” series monitors with GLM calibration to ensure accurate translation and consistency across the entire facility. Built upon a robust dark steel skeleton frame, the piece is finished with a stunning solid wood countertop and matching solid wood side panels, providing a rich, organic contrast to the dark metal. Designed as the ultimate living room centerpiece, the unit features an expansive, open horizontal shelving bay across the top—ideal for housing a soundbar, media players, or gaming consoles. The focal point is the built-in electric fireplace insert, flanked by two highly functional storage cabinets. These side compartments are secured by custom cabinet doors featuring industrial expanded metal mesh inserts heavily encased in welded steel frames. This mesh design not only adds raw visual texture but also allows for excellent airflow and remote control functionality for any housed electronics.

This featured project was designed as a contemporary theme with an Asian twist with clean straight lines and right angles to mirror the architecture of the home. We also incorporated many native and adapted species. Highland Landscaping designed and installed the irrigation, drainage, landscaping, and sod for this residential new construction. We installed drip irrigation in as many areas as possible versus the traditional above ground sprinkler system design. The design of drip irrigation, native and adapted plant species, coincides with Highland Landscaping’s mission to provide leading edge water conservation designs. We strive to create robust, hardy landscapes that require very little water or maintenance, and thrive in Texas.

In the residential periphery of Lisbon, two physicians are establishing a home to grow their family. The original interior was conscientiously updated to serve as a pristine haven for the pair of professionals with busy schedules. Neutral walls, left bare to the interplay between light and shadow, are humanized by a verdant leitmotif inspired by their love of outdoor travel. Custom furniture from local craftsmen features simple volumes in wood and white tones that evoke a sense of both the natural and the minimal. Robust yet luxurious, child- and pet-friendly materials dress the interior. The kitchen and dining room were united into one open entertaining space at the heart of the home. Composite countertops chosen to match the existing stone window sills allot ample workspace and serve as a buffet for the adjacent dining room. There, a custom-crafted table and floating shelf provide a neutral canvas for soirées, while mid-century chairs and a dry floral arrangement by a local ikebana artist add a spray of color. The kitchen entrance was transformed into a virescent, multi-purpose pantry corridor, complete with integrated refrigerator and freezer. A corner niche in the foyer features the ceramic sculpture Gato Assanhado (Hissing Cat) by Bordallo Pinheiro, and a bespoke mirror reflects upon double doors to a living room configured for both work and relaxation; a tailored desk and drawer unit support the former, an ample couch and welcoming armchairs the latter.
