Herbs are one of the cornerstones of Edible Gardens, particularly those which require special attention to spatial restrictions, like balcony gardens. Sun lovers like Mediterranean herbs are perfect for S or SW exposures. Herbs grow quickly, generally need very little space (they can grow in as little as 6" of soil if you are hard-pressed, but prefer 7-8").

Looking down at the original planting created for this property. A tapestry of foliage colors, shapes and textures was used to liven up this somewhat shady space. Key plants in this photograph are Autumn Brilliance Autumn Fern, Climbing Hydrangea, Hot Lips Chelone, Winter Hellebore, Weeping English Yew, Dwarf Rhododendron, Azalea and Gulfstream Nandina.

Pictured here are Dianthus, also known as Pinks. Great for spilling over rock walls. Select a site with full sun and well-drained soil, preferably with neutral to alkaline soil pH. Dianthus won't tolerate wet soils, especially in winter.
