The master bedroom, while snug, receives a dose of grandeur from the vaulted ceiling and wide arched window. The original slats in the ceiling offer contrast to the white elements, while a skylight lends an open feeling. The ladder was also a piece of the original barn. It becomes an interesting sculptural element as it mirrors the staircases in the house.

Fresh white walls and clean geometry highlight original features of the barn. For maximum efficiency, Franklin lined exterior walls with structurally insulated panels (SIP's). Utilizing this system over standard stick-building processes saved construction time, and insulates more efficiently than traditional insulation.

Pairing dark furniture pieces with a white washed environment proves that all white is anything but boring. Continuing the color to the floor expands the feeling of the space, while espresso-stained pieces punctuate the arrangement with a welcome contrast. Adrienne DeRosa Photography

Located on the second level, Franklin's home office graciously overlooks the front entrance via a massive arched window. The key to successfully transforming the design of the barn into a home, according to Franklin, was to scale windows and doors according to the massive volume that existed. "The majority of windows are 4'x8' in size, and main-level doorways are eight feet tall", he says. Franklin runs his firm, Franklin & Associates, from his office on the main level. Being in plain view of the stairwell calls for a quick means of concealing the trappings of the workday. The request from my client for this kitchen remodel was to imbue the room with a rustic farmhouse feeling, but without the usual tropes or kitsch. What resulted is a beautiful mix of refined and rural. To begin, we laid down a stunning silver travertine floor in a Versailles pattern and used the color palette to inform the rest of the space. The bleached silvery wood of the island and the cream cabinetry compliment the flooring. Of course the stainless steel appliances continue the palette, as do the porcelain backsplash tiles made to look like rusted or aged metal. The deep bowl farmhouse sink and faucet that looks like it is from a bygone era give the kitchen a sense of permanence and a connection to the past without veering into theme-park design.
