Franklin added the four season porch on to the back of the barn, making it the only part of the home that is new construction. "The design was intended to have a completely different atmosphere, yet still work in harmony with the original structure," Franklin explains. An intimate dining area is endowed with vast proportions thanks to the soaring vaulted ceiling and eight-foot tall windows. Franklin designed and fabricated the dining room group out of glass and solid light maple. While much of the ground floor houses utility areas for the home, the main entrance, acts as a reliquary of the barn that once was. Franklin discovered the pot-belly stove in pieces buried around the property. While they were covered in mud, Franklin refurbished each part and reassembled the stove for a handsome reminder of the home's history. The triptych above the console table appropriately displays original drawings and schematics of the farmland. The entertainment loft is the homeowner's favorite spot in the house. "It's sunny and cozy," Franklin states. "I like looking over the railing down to the lower level," he says of the twelve-foot drop. "…not for those who are scared of heights!" Pool Table: Custom made, designed by Tim Franklin

Franklin utilized as much of the barn's original layout as possible, which not only saved in construction costs, but also helped to maintain the integrity of the two-hundred-year-old structure. Rather than completely reconfigure the interior spaces, the designer worked within them and chose materials, such as this steel railing, that highlight and define each area.

The neutral color palette continues into the sunroom. Franklin chose more graphic patterns such as plaid and animal prints to complement dark wooden furnishings. Instead of choosing a conventional entertainment system, Franklin designed integrated shelving in his gathering area. By utilizing the flip-side of his dining room storage, he has created a system that effectively serves many purposes without interrupting the flow of the main floor.

Not only do these pre-finished rustic faux wood beams scream Tuscan farmhouse, but they also visually widened this long and narrow room. This was also achieved by eliminating the tall wall unit (formerly centered in the room) and mounting TV on the wall.
