Karen and Chad of Tower Lakes, IL were tired of their unfinished basement functioning as nothing more than a storage area and depressing gym. They wanted to increase the livable square footage of their home with a cohesive finished basement design, while incorporating space for the kids and adults to hang out. “We wanted to make sure that upon renovating the basement, that we can have a place where we can spend time and watch movies, but also entertain and showcase the wine collection that we have,” Karen said. After a long search comparing many different remodeling companies, Karen and Chad found Advance Design Studio. They were drawn towards the unique “Common Sense Remodeling” process that simplifies the renovation experience into predictable steps focused on customer satisfaction. “There are so many other design/build companies, who may not have transparency, or a focused process in mind and I think that is what separated Advance Design Studio from the rest,” Karen said. Karen loved how designer Claudia Pop was able to take very high-level concepts, “non-negotiable items” and implement them in the initial 3D drawings. Claudia and Project Manager DJ Yurik kept the couple in constant communication through the project. “Claudia was very receptive to the ideas we had, but she was also very good at infusing her own points and thoughts, she was very responsive, and we had an open line of communication,” Karen said. A very important part of the basement renovation for the couple was the home gym and sauna. The “high-end hotel” look and feel of the openly blended work out area is both highly functional and beautiful to look at. The home sauna gives them a place to relax after a long day of work or a tough workout. “The gym was a very important feature for us,” Karen said. “And I think (Advance Design) did a very great job in not only making the gym a functional area, but also an aesthetic point in our basement”. An extremely unique wow-factor in this basement is the walk in glass wine cellar that elegantly displays Karen and Chad’s extensive wine collection. Immediate access to the stunning wet bar accompanies the wine cellar to make this basement a popular spot for friends and family. The custom-built wine bar brings together two natural elements; Calacatta Vicenza Quartz and thick distressed Black Walnut. Sophisticated yet warm Graphite Dura Supreme cabinetry provides contrast to the soft beige walls and the Calacatta Gold backsplash. An undermount sink across from the bar in a matching Calacatta Vicenza Quartz countertop adds functionality and convenience to the bar, while identical distressed walnut floating shelves add an interesting design element and increased storage. Rich true brown Rustic Oak hardwood floors soften and warm the space drawing all the areas together. Across from the bar is a comfortable living area perfect for the family to sit down at a watch a movie. A full bath completes this finished basement with a spacious walk-in shower, Cocoa Brown Dura Supreme vanity with Calacatta Vicenza Quartz countertop, a crisp white sink and a stainless-steel Voss faucet. Advance Design’s Common Sense process gives clients the opportunity to walk through the basement renovation process one step at a time, in a completely predictable and controlled environment. “Everything was designed and built exactly how we envisioned it, and we are really enjoying it to it’s full potential,” Karen said. Photography by: Amy Birrer This lovely beach cabin was completely remodeled to add more space and make it a bit more functional. Many vintage pieces were reused in keeping with the vintage of the space. We carved out new space in this beach cabin kitchen, bathroom and laundry area that was nonexistent in the previous layout. The original drainboard sink and gas range were incorporated into the new design as well as the reused door on the small reach-in pantry. The white tile countertop is trimmed in nautical rope detail and the backsplash incorporates subtle elements from the sea framed in beach glass colors. The client even chose light fixtures reminiscent of bulkhead lamps. The bathroom doubles as a laundry area and is painted in blue and white with the same cream painted cabinets and countertop tile as the kitchen. We used a slightly different backsplash and glass pattern here and classic plumbing fixtures.

It gives a great visual appeal while also complementing the interior of the house and matching the client's lifestyle. Because we have a consistent design, we went for a vanity that matches the floor design, and other accessories in the bathroom. We used accent lighting in some areas such as the vanity, bathtub, and shower which brings a unique effect to the bathroom. Besides the artificial light, we go natural by allowing in more natural lights using windows. In the walk-in shower, the shower door was clear glass therefore, the room looked brighter and gave a fantastic result. Also, the garden tub was effective in providing a deeper soak compared to a normal bathtub and it provides a thoroughly relaxing environment. The bathroom also contains a one-piece toilet room for more privacy. The final look was fantastic.

We had so much fun picking out stone with these clients! They had fantastic out-of-the-big-box-store taste. We helped them find this Rainforest Green Granite and Red Dragon Granite to pair with their red and white cabinets and stunning patinated copper fixtures. The overall effect is playful and eclectic...yet still balanced and sophisticated. This lovely little bar corner got a full does of the mixed stone tile and Red Dragon Granite fabricated in a curved front to match the design of the island.

This gorgeous light-filled kitchen pairs vintage and classic elements for a beautiful, airy feeling space. The original built-in natural cherry cabinets are offset by new crisp white cabinetry; the old and new with comparable door styles alongside meticulously crafted woodwork and moldings. At the heart of the space is a curved, two tier-island which is the perfect spot for food prep and entertaining. A mix of metals have been used, blending chrome hardware with Victorian style copper pendant lights, continuing to blend the old with the new for a layered look. The neutral color scheme is punctuated by the green dragon granite countertop and backsplash with a fire engine red Lacanche range.

This luxury transitional residence was visualized to help the client evaluate and finalize the exterior material palette and landscape design before construction. The project focused on exploring various combinations of finishes, allowing the client to compare different design directions and understand how each choice would influence the overall character of the home. Throughout the design process, multiple options were tested for the roofing materials, exterior wall finishes, and window trims. These visualizations provided a clear representation of the subtle differences in texture, color, and architectural expression, helping the client make confident design decisions. The version presented here is the final selected scheme, combining timeless materials with refined detailing to create a sophisticated and elegant appearance that perfectly complements the home's transitional architecture. The project was modeled in SketchUp and rendered using D5 Render, delivering high-quality visuals that streamlined the material selection process and brought the design vision to life.
