In Raleigh, North Carolina, we installed a 36-foot white oak slide in a custom home. The client loved it so much they ordered a second one—literally 15 minutes after we finished the installation. When Clyde returned to the office, there was already a check in the mailbox for slide number two. This 14,000-square-foot home now features 72 linear feet of curved white oak slide: one connecting the second floor to the main level, another linking the main floor to the finished basement. The Challenge This beautiful waterfront home was begging for an update. Our clients wanted a contemporary design with modern finishes. They craved improved functionality in the kitchen, hardwood flooring in the living areas, and a spacious walk-in closet in the master bathroom. With two children in school, our clients also needed the project completed during their summer vacation – leaving a slim 90 days for the entire remodel. Could we do it? …Challenge accepted! Our Solution With their active summer travel schedule, our clients elected to vacate their home for the duration of the project. This was ideal for the intrusive nature of the scope of work. In preparation, our design team created a project plan to suit our client’s needs. With such a clear timeline, we were able to select and order long-lead items in plenty of time for the project start date. In the kitchen, we rearranged the layout to provide superior ventilation for the cooktop on the exterior wall. We added two large storage cabinets with glass doors, accented by a sleek mosaic backsplash of glass tile. We also incorporated a large contemporary waterfall island into the room. With seating at one end, the island provides both increased functionality and an eye-catching focal point for the center of the room. On the interior wall of the kitchen, we maximized storage with a wall of built-in cabinetry – complete with pullout pantry cabinets, a double oven, and a large stainless refrigerator. Our clients wisely chose rich, dark-colored wood flooring to add warmth to the contemporary design. After installing the flooring in the kitchen, we brought it into the main living areas as well. In the great room, we wrapped the existing gas fireplace in a neutral stack stone. The effect of the stone on the media and window wall is breathtaking. In the master bathroom, we expanded the closet by pushing the wall back into the adjacent pass-through hallway. The new walk-in closet now includes an impressive closet organization system. Returning to the master bathroom, we removed the single vanity and repositioned the toilet, allowing for a new, curb-less glass shower and a his-and-hers vanity. The entire vanity and shower wall is finished in white 12×24 porcelain tile. The vertical glass mosaic accent band and backlit floating mirrors add to the clean, modern style. To the left of the master bathroom entry, we even added a matching make-up area. Finally, we installed a number of elegant enhancements in the remaining rooms. The clients chose a bronze metal relief accent wall as well as some colorful finishes and artwork for the entry and hallway. Exceptional Results Our clients were simply thrilled with the final product! Not only did they return from their summer vacation to a gorgeous home remodel, but we concluded the project a full week ahead of schedule. As a result, the family was able to move in sooner than planned, giving them plenty of time to acclimate to the renovated space before their kids returned to school. Well situated in Mont Royal, this split-level home had many positives apart from its dated interior, and layout of many small and inefficient rooms. This was all at odds with the owners’ lifestyle and aesthetic. The client had architectural plans designed for a third floor addition that were to include a master bedroom and ensuite bathroom. The desired look for the entire house influenced all aspects of construction. Apart from the removal most walls on the main floor, everything was stripped back to the most simple and pure of finishing materials. The existing floors were refinished in a smoked grey matte palette and offset the rich warm walnut accents in the kitchen and soft white walls. With an abundance of white walls throughout, feature walls were essential in both the master bedroom and ensuite. The deep charcoal wall in the bedroom provides dramatic contrast to the teak headboard and hammered silver light fixture. The ensuite’s feature wall is made of pewter ceramic tiles that add texture and elegance to this simple space. Materials and furnishings throughout were selected for their simplicity and form. Comfort was the primary consideration in selecting the sectional as the client wanted to be able to sit at length for leisure and TV viewing. The side tables are a dark wood that blends beautifully with the newly installed dark wood floors, the windows are dressed in simple treatments of gray linen with navy accents, for the perfect final touch. With regard to artwork and accessories, Arlene spent many hours at outside markets finding just the perfect accessories to compliment all the furnishings. With comfort and function in mind, each welcoming seat is flanked by a surface for setting a drink – again, making it ideal for entertaining.

The client purchased a contemporary home but dreamed of updating it with classic style. Since the home offered plenty of space, it just needed new finishes. The kitchen naturally required the most dramatic changes, both functionally and aesthetically. The architect re-worked the floorplan to nix an awkwardly angled peninsula in favor of a large central island. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry offers an abundance of storage and reflects the clients sophisticated transitional style. The redundant rear foyer became a brand new dining room which now shares a connection with the renovated kitchen.

A metal roof tops the front porch, while columns and gables add to this classic farmhouse façade. Front and side stairs, show the way to the porch, creating a warm, inviting welcome. Double doors lead into a versatile bedroom/study, and the dining room is connected to the kitchen by a butler’s pantry. The great room is enhanced with a cathedral ceiling, built-in cabinetry and fireplace that faces the kitchen. While a bay window extends the breakfast nook, French doors access the rear porch. The master suite features a cathedral ceiling, large walk-in closet and elegant bath. Two additional bedrooms can be found on the second floor, along with a bonus room and full bath.

We all know that this is the space where everyone gathers whether you want them to or not! We believe in creating a clean palette that can host all of the colorful chaos of the holiday crowds, an elegant night of cooking for two, and the frosting-covered fingers of a pack of four year olds. A kitchen’s flexibility and usefulness are as important as the finishes, and it is our job to listen to your functional needs as well as your aesthetic desires.

After a not-so-great experience with a previous contractor, this homeowner came to Kraft Custom Construction in search of a better outcome. Not only was she wanting a more functional kitchen to enjoy cooking in, she also sought out a team with a clear process and great communication. Two elements of the original floorplan shaped the design of the new kitchen: a protruding pantry that blocked the flow from the front door into the main living space, and two large columns in the middle of the living room. Using a refined French-Country design aesthetic, we completed structural modifications to reframe the pantry, and integrated a new custom buffet cabinet to tie in the old columns with new wood ceiling beams. Other design solutions include more usable countertop space, a recessed spice cabinet, numerous drawer organizers, and updated appliances and finishes all around. This bright new kitchen is both comfortable yet elegant, and the perfect place to cook for the family or entertain a group of guests.
