These clients had recently moved to Texas and really needed to remodel a few spaces in the home - the kitchen was number 1 priority! Wanting a clean and modern update, while keeping the room warm and inviting, we think we hit the mark. Cabinets are from Ultracraft. The perimeter is their Metropolis Door in Melamine - Silver Elm vertical grain. The island we contrasted with the Acrilux II Lux door in Pure White (gloss). Cabinet hardware from from Atlas Homewares, the IT pull in brushed nickel. Counters we were able to pull two different materials together. The perimeter counter material was Pure White from Caesarstone - very simple. Brought in some pattern with Quartzmaster Calcutta Borghini on the backsplash, and on the island. The mitered waterfall edge gives it an extra "oomph" that we just love. For fixtures, we kept things fairly simple. A Blanco super single bowl sink, and California Faucets Corsano Pull down at the island. We paired with a matching soap dispenser and air switch. The appliances were also important, so we took some time mixing and matching what was needed and what worked well within the budget. From Wolf we have a gas cooktop, Double oven and Microwave. We opted for a Best Vent Hood and blower, Electrolux Refrigerator ad Bosch Dishwasher to round out the selections.

Two large sofas, lounge chairs and ottomans create a plethora of seating in this comfortable family room. The openness between the kitchen and family room is great for entertaining! This is the home of a young couple who really wanted a stylish space with dashes of bright color. To do this, we kept the sofas neutral and added beautiful abstract pillows, red ottomans and chairs. “This design originated with the client’s desire to duplicate the warmth of Tuscan Architecture,” says Stolz. “The vision that South Coast Architects set forth was to create the feel of an old Tuscan Village as a private residence at their golf community, ‘The Hideaway’ in La Quinta, California. However, we had to keep in mind that we were still designing for a desert lifestyle, which meant an emphasis on indoor/outdoor living and capturing the spectacular views of the golf course and neighboring mountains,” Stolz adds. “The owners had spent a lot of time in Europe and knew exactly what they wanted when it came to the overall look of the home, especially the stone,” says Muth. “The mason ended up creating a dozen mock-ups of various stone profiles and blends to help the family decide what really worked for them. Ultimately, they selected Eldorado Stone’s Orchard Cypress Ridge profile that offers a beautiful blend of stone sizes and colors.” “The generous use of Eldorado Stone with brick detailing over the majority of the exterior of the home added the authenticity and timelessness that we were striving for in the design,” says Stolz. “Our clients want the very best, but if we can duplicate something and save money, what client would say no? Photography by Ken Wyner 2101 Connecticut Avenue (c.1928), an 8-story brick and limestone Beaux Arts style building with spacious apartments, is said to have been “the finest apartment house to appear in Washington between the two World Wars.” (James M. Goode, Best Addresses, 1988.) As advertised for rent in 1928, the apartments were designed “to incorporate many details that would aid the residents in establishing a home atmosphere, one possessing charm and dignity usually found only in a private house… the character and tenancy (being) assured through careful selection of guests.” Home to Senators, Ambassadors, a Vice President and a Supreme Court Justice as well as numerous Washington socialites, the building still stands as one of the undisputed “best addresses” in Washington, DC.) So well laid-out was this gracious 3,000 sf apartment that the basic floor plan remains unchanged from the original architect’s 1927 design. The organizing feature was, and continues to be, the grand “gallery” space in the center of the unit. Every room in the apartment can be accessed via the gallery, thus preserving it as the centerpiece of the “charm and dignity” which the original design intended. Programmatic modifications consisted of the addition of a small powder room off of the foyer, and the conversion of a corner “sun room” into a room for meditation and study. The apartment received a thorough updating of all systems, services and finishes, including a new kitchen and new bathrooms, several new built-in cabinetry units, and the consolidation of numerous small closets and passageways into more accessible and efficient storage spaces.

This active, forward-thinking couple bought a new house in order to “right-size” for the next chapter in their lives. They found a ranch home in a neighborhood they liked, but the floor plan needed a remodel in order to fit their lifestyle. Two small bedrooms were combined in order to make one large master. The existing living room and garage were combined to make one large living space. The floor of the garage was raised to be on an equal plane to the existing living room. Hardwood was added to match the existing flooring and then all was refinished for a fresh look. Built originally in the late 1800's, and lived in by only two families, this gem of a historic mansion was in need of a lot of work. The goal of this project was to add central air, renovate and expand 3-1/2 baths, add one bath, add a 2nd level laundry, replace old wall paper, and to combine a kitchen, breakfast room, laundry and butler's pantry into one large farmhouse style kitchen. We also added radiator covers, replaced kitchen flooring, added a mudroom, and added wainscot to the main stair. Finally, we upgraded all lighting and wiring throughout the house. We are about to start phase 2 of the project to restore the windows, new landscaping, painting and restoring the trim and siding for the house and restoring the roofing and flashing. We are also looking to add a side porch and deck. The challenge of this project was to do all of this work, but to keep the soul and character of the house in tact. The owners loved the house as it was, so it was very important to keep and restore as much as possible. In the rest of the house, the owners decided to just add tongue oil to the floors. Fireplaces were kept in tact. Original pine trim and millwork were restored and we added a window seat on the 3rd floor. The further challenge was to do this work, including planning and all interior design in 4-1/2 months. By signing up Hyo Lee and his company Millennium Homes as our contractor from the beginning, we met the demanding schedule. We looked back to the time period and selected finishes and details that seemed appropriate. The client built a large idea book on Houzz which helped throughout the project to make sure we could design to their style. Bathrooms carry a theme of natural marble and stones. The kitchen features an antique oak herringbone floor from Mountain Lumber. Cabinets are inset, with a small bead to emulate antiques in the owner's collection and to maintain the simple details of the existing Butler's Pantry cabinets which we kept and restored. Wallpaper selections were made by the client with help from Mona Berman Interiors.
