This South Minneapolis 1922 Bungalow, was ready for an update bath. Staying true the original charm of the home, the homeowners were looking for elements with character. Handcrafted tiles from a past Mpls art fair designed by a local artist directed the design of the space. With such a small bath, a small wall hung sink was selected to create the image of more space and to show off the flooring. A new tub and Kohler plumbing fixtures were installed in oil rubbed bronze finish. Marble tile flooring was selected in a floweret pattern and was framed with a coordinating marble border. Ceramic mint green tiles designed to resemble handmade tiles were installed on the walls and shower and trimmed with an oil rubbed bronze finished end. Overall, the new bathroom blends in nicely with the Arts & Crafts home and decor and will be enjoyed by the family for many years to come.

This is the first certified Passive House in the Chicago area, built by Biltmore Insulated Concrete (thermal shell) and Evolutionary Home Builders (GC). TBDA acted as architect and Passive House consultant, performing the rigorous calculations in conjunction with the spatial, structural, mechanical, and esthetic design considerations. Cadmium Interiors selected interior finishes and furniture.
Passive Houses have inherently good indoor air quality due to the continuous ventilation and condensation-proof thermal shell, but we took this to the next level by becoming a pilot project for the Healthy Homes Initiative. All construction materials, finishes, paints, adhesives, caulks, etc., were selected to be non-toxic (i.e., no-added-formaldehyde cabinet construction), using Greenguard as a standard where possible.

This uniquely designed home in Seattle, Washington recently underwent a dramatic transformation that provides both a fresh new aesthetic and improved functionality. Renovations on this home went above and beyond the typical “face-lift” of the home remodel project and created a modern, one-of-a-kind space perfectly designed to accommodate the growing family of the homeowners.
Along with creating a new aesthetic for the home, constructing a dwelling that was both energy efficient and ensured a high level of comfort were major goals of the project. To this end, the homeowners selected A5h Windows and Doors with triple-pane glazing which offers argon-filled, low-E coated glass and warm edge spacers within an all-aluminum frame. The hidden sash option was selected to provide a clean and modern aesthetic on the exterior facade. Concealed hinges allow for a continuous air seal, while premium stainless-steel handles offer a refined contemporary touch.

This 1980’s condo on the East Bank, was ready for some updates to personalize their master bedroom/bath. Inspired by a recent trip to Asia, the clients were eager for a solid shower floor. After much searching, Azul blue Brazilian granite was selected with a custom Schluter drain system. To complement the gray and blue tones, gray travertine was selected for the floors and walls with a blue recycled glass accent. To carry the modern custom look onto the vanity wall, two stacked floating vanities were designed. The Azul granite was installed, modern faucet and basin, as well as the blue glass tile to the ceilings. Custom lighting finishes off the space. The homeowners couldn’t be happier and are thoroughly enjoying their custom master bath.

NE Minneapolis residence contacted Castle for a whole main floor remodel. Their “to do list” included, remodeling the kitchen, refinishing all hardwood floors, and remodeling the existing main floor bath. The homeowner’s were hoping to gain more storage, open the space for a lighter and brighter feel, and adding function to the kitchen. By relocating the range, closing off an unused pocket door, and opening up the kitchen into the living space we created a more functional layout. Custom cherry cabinets were designed with angled ends to maximize countertop space yet still have a comfortable pathway to the side door. The cabinets were designed for functionality and growth with the family; pull out cabinets were installed in several cabinets including the pantry, tip-out storage at sink, trash/recycling pull out, and two lazy-Susan corners. Neutral color tones were selected for the Cambria countertops and ceramic backsplash. New natural oak hardwood floors were installed to match the existing hardwood floors in the home. New lighting was selected with a new switching layout for an even more efficient space. The growing family is excited to enjoy the not only beautiful but functional open space.

The ensuite/powder room does not have windows; by providing several light fixtures, neutral finishes and mirrors, the space brightens up. While selecting materials, our clients fell in love with the calacatta quartz countertop. They loved how the veins moved, and the warmth it gave. While thinking about the room and using materials that complemented the countertop and staying in tune with the rest of the house, we selected the same light wood veneer cabinetry throughout the condo. A band of the ceramic floor tile flows up to the ceiling with a dimmable L.E.D. wall sconce. The dimmable wall scones provide light in both directions reflecting off the glass and mirrors, creating ample task lighting. Installing mirrors up to the ceiling creates a sense of openness.

The Tilt Turn window is a European-style window with two distinct functions: swing it in like a door or tilt the top of the sash into your room for ventilation. One handle controls both operations. The tilt turn is a great window for unique situations where you want additional ventilation or access.
Features
• A popular European Style window
• Dual-functioning: Swing like a door or tilt the top sash for ventilation using the same handle for both (or each) operation/s
• Great for emergency exit access
• Low-e argon
• Double Glaze
• U Factor = 0.19
• SHGC = 0.23
• Thermal Transmission = 0.21
• Modular turn-tilt fitting system with visible hinge side
• Simple and intuitive operation
• Versatile and simple adjustment
• Individual design matching due to powder-coated hinge parts or caps in different colors
• Large central reinforcing chamber for optimum static performance.
• Robust walls guarantee greater stability and durability of windows, as well as increased protection against noise and temperature changes.
• System reinforcement profile made of galvanized steel, ensuring stiffness, and correct functioning.
• Compact design, delicate bevels and slants give the profiles a modern and elegant look.
• Extremely durable and modern gaskets ensure that windows are tight and reliable.
• Five-chamber construction provides ideal thermal protection
How It Works

Duo contrasting cabinets perfectly designed and laid out for this log cabin kitchen remodel. Choosing natural wood cabinets for the island with contrasting stark white cabinets for the perimeter of the kitchen is stunning! First, client came to showroom looking to make their kitchen more function. Being a log cabin and prior remodels made this a bit tricky from the previous owners. Next, we began working around support beams with the client. However, a solution from owner was derived to make the space more functional by bringing the wall out further. This allotted more space for the wall cabinets and made the space more appealing.
Cabinet selection and designing was next in process. Island selection is natural hickory cabinets with a liquid toffee glaze. Which added richness to the island bringing warmth into the kitchen. Tying in the woods from the ceiling and various walls. Additionally, the painted alder cabinets with a glaze along the perimeter brighten up the cozy kitchen. Finally, adding beautiful desert beach granite countertops tops off the project. This kitchen will be enjoyable for years to come.

2013 NARI CAPITAL COTY, MERIT AWARD WINNER, GREEN REMODELING INTERIOR
This couple wanted to update their kitchen and first floor, using environmentally-friendly products in the process. Making it green, safe and contemporary were the goals of this renovation.
The new kitchen layout with the center island has made getting around this central kitchen more possible. Taller, custom cabinetry has improved the overall storage and accessibility. The open concept design makes the space the hub of the home.
Green, safe and contemporary features make this project the jewel of the neighborhood. These features include:
• Use of custom-made Douglas Fir slab cabinetry (engineered wood veneer from younger growth trees) with low shin finish (low VOC water based finish) and kilned dried select hardwood frames construction without use of any formaldehyde glues.
• Use of no VOC paint on entire interior and exterior.
• Manufacturing and installing 12” x 12 ft x ¾” solid birch hardwood floor for entire first floor. This was finished with Low-VOC water based finish.
• Reuse of some of the existing lumber and plywood in the same project was essential.
• Installing LED recess lighting and task lighting with Lurton Home system lighting management and controllable low voltage dimmers.
• Installing high efficiency with the highest rating of Energy Star appliances.
• Installing high grade closed cell insulation in walls and open space, caulking and sealing all open gaps.
• Install large double pane-low E, argon filled gas windows.
• Use of air tight insulated duct chases on all new ducts.
The homeowners, who are active members of wildlife preservations, are pleased with green and environmentally safe kitchen and entire first floor project.

Located in rural western Sonoma County, this artist studio and garage are placed adjacent to a modest late 19th century farmhouse. The design envisioned a simple space, which would integrate with and embrace the landscape, while capturing the vocabulary of farm structures.
Both buildings consist of a pre-manufactured Quonset hut ribbed roof, raised on a six foot board-formed concrete stem wall. The two buildings have end walls with 10 foot by 12 foot openings, a glass garage door and three folding patio doors surrounded by cement panel walls. Quonset ribs are a self-supporting structure of galvanized metal. It was initially assumed that such a roof structure would save costs, but that ultimately was not true due to the modifications necessary to make it completely watertight, rural fire zone requirements and energy efficiency measures. The concrete stem walls are exposed board form and the garage features an imbedded stone wall sculpture from Borobudur, Indonesia.
The garage building is oversized to allow for a future glass studio or workshop at the rear. A fiberglass skylight is integrated into the ribs and provides additional daylight. The second building, which functions as an art studio, has insulated walls and ceilings with double glazed windows and doors. The vaulted roof and its insulation is sheathed with ash plywood with integrated LED lighting at the perimeter. To maintain the light throughout the studio structure, translucent plastic panels were utilized above the concrete for the areas enclosing the toilet and shower space and the service sink areas. The sliding bar wood and metal barn door were reused from the farmhouse.
Sustainability was considered from the design, selection of materials, energy conservation and ongoing construction waste recycling. The design began with a simple form, allowing for cross ventilation and daylighting. A minimal palette of materials were selected while maximizing their use. Materials were chosen for their multi-use characteristics, to be used as structure and well as finish, where possible, such as the concrete walls, manufactured Quonset hut roofing system and cement panels. The ribs of the vaulted roof system sit atop 10” concrete stem which adds to the thermal mass of the building. The garage building is unconditioned allowing for a single layer of materials. The artist studio is well insulated, double glazed with low-e glass; a hydronic radiant heat system supplied by a 99.8 efficient on-demand water heater is powered by photovoltaic panels.
