Design ideas for a landscaping in San Francisco.

A growing family needed extra space in their 1930 Bungalow. We designed an addition sensitive to the neighborhood and complimentary to the original design that includes a generously sized one car garage, a 350 square foot screen porch and a master suite with walk-in closet and bathroom. The original upstairs bathroom was remodeled simultaneously, creating two new bathrooms. The master bathroom has a curbless shower and glass tile walls that give a contemporary vibe. The screen porch has a fir beadboard ceiling and the floor is random width white oak planks milled from a 120 year-old tree harvested from the building site to make room for the addition. photo by Skot Weidemann

This South Texas ranch home utilizes the flexibility of separate building volumes and a vast, open site to create the ideal country retreat. The arrangement of the three simple volumes recalls and reinterprets the historic building forms of the Texas plains, while meeting the clients’ programmatic requests for highly efficient spaces, both public and private. The dogrun pavilion, which connects the Great Room and Master Suite beneath a delicate steel-truss roof, provides the perfect place to gather in the shade, entertain guests, and pick up the comfortable southeast breezes. With this sensitive approach, the result is not just a collection of structures, but an integrated dwelling awaiting a comfortable Texas lifestyle. Design ideas for a landscaping in Other.

The 5,000 square foot private residence is located in the community of Horseshoe Bay, above the shores of Lake LBJ, and responds to the Texas Hill Country vernacular prescribed by the community: shallow metal roofs, regional materials, sensitive scale massing and water-wise landscaping. The house opens to the scenic north and north-west views and fractures and shifts in order to keep significant oak, mesquite, elm, cedar and persimmon trees, in the process creating lush private patios and limestone terraces. The Owners desired an accessible residence built for flexibility as they age. This led to a single level home, and the challenge to nestle the step-less house into the sloping landscape. Full height glazing opens the house to the very beautiful arid landscape, while porches and overhangs protect interior spaces from the harsh Texas sun. Expansive walls of industrial insulated glazing panels allow soft modulated light to penetrate the interior while providing visual privacy. An integral lap pool with adjacent low fenestration reflects dappled light deep into the house. Chaste stained concrete floors and blackened steel focal elements contrast with islands of mesquite flooring, cherry casework and fir ceilings. Selective areas of exposed limestone walls, some incorporating salvaged timber lintels, and cor-ten steel components further the contrast within the uncomplicated framework. The Owner’s object and art collection is incorporated into the residence’s sequence of connecting galleries creating a choreography of passage that alternates between the lucid expression of simple ranch house architecture and the rich accumulation of their heritage. The overall impact of this kitchen space is the defining element in the overall scheme for the project. We were able to flip around a stone fireplace to become a dominant focal point in the interior space. We created a central axis from front to rear by the addition of the massive window wall leading to the outdoor entertaining area. Clearly the woodwork and the attention to every detail are evident in the final product. This unique kitchen is the focal point of 2 complimentary buildings which have been connected to form a beautiful master suite on one side and a lively family room and dining room on the other. This central open kitchen is the focal point for this sensitive and creative renovation. Custom walnut cabinets and built-ins and Danby marble countertops blend perfectly with the carefully re-pointed stone walls of the original walls of the existing buildings.

The fact that Eldorado Stone is locally manufactured, offers low maintenance, is competitively priced, and features the geometric shape they were looking for provided further confirmation that this was the company to work with. They chose Eldorado’s Castle Stone and were originally going to only apply it onto the fireplace and chimney. However, because the product complemented the home’s shade of red, they chose to do a more dramatic application, which resulted in great satisfaction for both the team and the homeowners.
