Atherton has many large substantial homes - our clients purchased an existing home on a one acre flag-shaped lot and asked us to design a new dream home for them. The result is a new 7,000 square foot four-building complex consisting of the main house, six-car garage with two car lifts, pool house with a full one bedroom residence inside, and a separate home office /work out gym studio building. A fifty-foot swimming pool was also created with fully landscaped yards.
Given the rectangular shape of the lot, it was decided to angle the house to incoming visitors slightly so as to more dramatically present itself. The house became a classic u-shaped home but Feng Shui design principals were employed directing the placement of the pool house to better contain the energy flow on the site. The main house entry door is then aligned with a special Japanese red maple at the end of a long visual axis at the rear of the site. These angles and alignments set up everything else about the house design and layout, and views from various rooms allow you to see into virtually every space tracking movements of others in the home.
The residence is simply divided into two wings of public use, kitchen and family room, and the other wing of bedrooms, connected by the living and dining great room. Function drove the exterior form of windows and solid walls with a line of clerestory windows which bring light into the middle of the large home. Extensive sun shadow studies with 3D tree modeling led to the unorthodox placement of the pool to the north of the home, but tree shadow tracking showed this to be the sunniest area during the entire year.
Sustainable measures included a full 7.1kW solar photovoltaic array technically making the house off the grid, and arranged so that no panels are visible from the property. A large 16,000 gallon rainwater catchment system consisting of tanks buried below grade was installed. The home is California GreenPoint rated and also features sealed roof soffits and a sealed crawlspace without the usual venting. A whole house computer automation system with server room was installed as well. Heating and cooling utilize hot water radiant heated concrete and wood floors supplemented by heat pump generated heating and cooling.
A compound of buildings created to form balanced relationships between each other, this home is about circulation, light and a balance of form and function.

Perched high above Nauset beach this 4 bedroom shingle style cottage is truly a little “jewel box”.
The exterior finish is durable and beautiful red cedar with copper flashing. The double sided fireplace (living room and screen porch) was constructed from reclaimed antique bricks.
The interior spaces are modest and cozy with a wonderful eclectic blend of furnishings and finishes personally selected by the owners. One of my very favorite projects.

This industrial liquor cabinet has been constructed in all steel and could be used as a centerpiece for your next party! This piece, like all of our furniture, can be built in any dimensions and customized in nearly any way imaginable. This one is 46.5” W x 18” D x 41” H. Built with rugged casters, this piece can double as a vintage bar cart or beverage center, but it can be out fitted with straight legs if you would like a stationary piece of furniture. It has been treated with a beautiful distressed chemical patina, but can be painted if you prefer a more colorful, uniform finish. The top is a durable piece of solid steel and is sure to endure a lifetime of family gatherings. The top, sides, or doors could also be made with one of our many reclaimed woods for a more rustic style. It has 4 doors, but could be made with more or less. The upper two are mesh and the lower 2 solid steel (finished with the same patina), but they can be all mesh, all steel, reclaimed wood or any combination you would like. Glass doors would add a stylish level of elegance and display your unique liquor collection you have built over the years. The cabinet areas are completely open but could be outfitted with fixed center shelves, removable shelves or adjustable shelves.
Please inquire for information and pricing on any changes you would like.

Varying shades of neutral colors with natural light...very tranquil.
The back side of the sofa is seen with out the slip cover that is normally used on it to protect from pets.
I designed the coffee table/ottoman with grandchildren in mind with the soft upholstered edges. A custom framed marble slab servers as the hard surface for the table.
The antique architectural fragment was perfect for above the fireplace.

Picture your family seated around this 54" round table with its knotty elm veneer, inlaid bands of darker wood for contrast, and unique pedestal style base. The table easily expands to seat 8 comfortably: simply open the geared wooden slide leaf mechanism and drop in the included 20" leaf. Seats up to 6 without leaf. W54" D54" H30"
The casually sophisticated Artisanal collection brings pleasing curves, the texture of natural dry finishes or subtle painted brush strokes, and antiqued bronze hardware to your room. Inspired by the classic beauty of vintage British Campaign furniture and royal French style, this classic collection includes a bench, console table, tray cocktail table, long cocktail table, oval back side chair, round dining table, server, etagere, end table, chairside table, round lamp table, and hall chest.

The dining room shares the same space as the living room, which necessitated that they be the same style. The cumbersome pedestal table was replaced with a two-toned table that can accommodate ten. Custom dining chairs with a unique “x” back feature one fabric on the chair back and another on the seat to create a one of a kind look. The china cabinet was swapped for a tall server that provides plenty of storage. A lovely round mirror with buffet lamps completes the look. A new, casual roman valance in a chocolate fabric with side panels coordinates with the living room window treatments.

Imagine yourself in the heritage and tradition of The Sovereign Collection, and experience the regal style that will create a grand statement in any room. The opulent, and posh The Sovereign bedroom group brings the influence of European antiques to life with traditional carvings, detailed looping, harlequin marble, and a subtle light café latte finish called Soft Mink. The quality and attention to detail is masterfully evidenced in the bedroom, which features a stately poster bed, complete with a 3D loop on the headboard, as well as hand carved accents on each post. Solid birch is used throughout the collection because of its close grains, and satiny texture, and the carefully applied café latte finish enhances the natural beauty of the wood. Each piece is carefully created and inspected to ensure the high standards of quality for which AICO is known.&&Soft curves, hand carvings, and silver and gold tipping are harmoniously tied together with decorative hardware, highlighting the design, detail, and style that are synonymous with Michael Amini Original Furniture Designs by AICO, which beautifully connect form, with function, while drawing influence from classic European architecture. Rich velvet lining ensures the protection for your fine delicates and personal treasures, and both English and French dovetail joints that create a durable drawer, add to the quality of this bedroom set that will enhance your room, while highlighting your style.

Dining Room in New Canaan photographed by Alan Barry. Millwork & all decor by The Rinfret Group. Tufted side chairs and a classic server create an elegant vibe. The mirror is an amazing center piece to the traditional vibe that this dining room gives off.

This lovely sideboard is goat skin on top and on the sides. The doors are made of stingray skin.

The home owner’s of this 90’s home came to us looking for an updated kitchen design and furniture for the family room, living room, dining room and study. What they got was an overall tweaking of the entire first floor. Small changes to the architecture and trim details made a large impact on the overall feel of the individual spaces in an open floorplan space. We then layered on all new lighting, wall and window treatments, furniture, accessories and art to create a warm and beautiful home for a young, growing family.Photos by Tom Grimes
