New shade tolerant, deer proof plantings were added along both sides of an existing driveway to create more seasonal interest, spring flowers, summer color and winter interest with a few evergreen shrubs. Project was completed in phases and seamlessly blends with existing plantings and woodlands beyond.

Closeup of astilbe and ferns we added for a more informal look. Stones were onsite and we placed them where they would add color and soften line with fence.

Our clients wanted a unique space that would radiate calmness and relaxation, accentuate a large art sculpture and include a large koi pond and deck. Four 100+ year old Oak trees and a large Mulberry tree on the property made it impossible to grow grass. We created a shady retreat with a palette of shade-tolerant plants offering multiple seasons of interest. A functional paver walk leads to the garage, and a gravel path meanders through plantings. The large koi pond with waterfall wall is sited near the deck for enjoyment.

This tired, unused San Francisco backyard was transformed into a modern, low-maintenance landscape with site-appropriate plantings enhanced by raised planting beds and a lead-free artificial lawn to replace the existing water-thirsty lawn. I created two separate "rooms" to break up the long narrow yard, and specified full range blue stone for the two small patio areas, connected by a curved pattern of rectangular pavers of the same natural stone. The raised concrete rectangular planting beds were incorporated to bring more movement and interest to the landscape along with gravel bed accents alongside. Some of the existing concrete remained, and was stained with a color to compliment the natural stone. These photos were taken over a three year period.
