Behind the unassuming exterior of a 1985 split-level home in Southwest Portland lies a dramatic transformation that celebrates both function and style. This kitchen renovation reimagines a dated footprint as an upscale postmodern gathering space, blending bold material selections with highly personalized storage solutions designed around the homeowners' lifestyle.
At the heart of the design is a striking composition of rich Sapele cabinetry, geometric white tile, and sleek contemporary finishes. The strong vertical grain of the wood creates warmth and movement throughout the space, while the dimensional backsplash introduces texture and visual rhythm. Together, these elements establish a distinctly postmodern aesthetic that balances nostalgia with modern sophistication.
The renovation began with a common challenge: a kitchen that lacked adequate storage and efficient workflow. Appliances were confined to tight corners, cabinetry was undersized, and valuable space was underutilized. Through strategic space planning, the layout was completely reworked to maximize functionality without sacrificing design. Every cabinet was thoughtfully customized with purpose-built storage, including integrated silverware organization, hidden tip-out trays for cleaning supplies, vertical dividers for baking sheets, and heavy-duty rollouts sized for everyday cookware.
The island serves as the functional centerpiece of the kitchen and was designed specifically to support meal preparation and entertaining. Adjustable pullout shelving accommodates oils and vinegars, specialized spice storage keeps ingredients within reach, and a double waste system simplifies composting and daily clean-up. Throughout the kitchen, panel-ready appliances and carefully concealed storage components maintain the clean lines of the design while minimizing visual distractions. A hidden microwave, integrated warming drawer, and counter-depth refrigerator all contribute to the seamless appearance of the space.
Entertaining was a primary objective for the homeowners and inspired the creation of a dedicated hospitality zone within a previously overlooked nook. Existing built-in bookcases were removed and replaced with a thoughtfully curated beverage station featuring a kegerator, wine refrigerator, and beverage refrigerator. Custom cabinetry was tailored to display the homeowners' collection of cocktail and pint glasses, while floating shelves with integrated lighting showcase an assortment of spirits, creating an inviting destination for guests before dinner gatherings.
What makes this project especially compelling is the balance between bold design expression and everyday livability. Rather than competing for attention, each material was selected to complement the others. High-gloss upper cabinetry quietly recedes into the dimensional backsplash, allowing the Sapele grain to remain the focal point. Chrome fixtures add reflectivity and polish, while waterfall countertops transform the island into a furniture-inspired centerpiece. Even details such as electrical cover plates were carefully selected to blend into the surrounding wood grain and preserve the clean visual composition.
The completed kitchen demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform an ordinary floor plan into a highly customized environment tailored to the way homeowners live, cook, and entertain. By combining meticulous storage planning, seamless appliance integration, and a confident postmodern aesthetic, this renovation delivers a sophisticated yet welcoming space where functionality and personality coexist beautifully.

This Chicago client was tired of living with her outdated and not-so-functional kitchen and came in for an update. The goals were to update the look of the space, enclose the washer/dryer, upgrade the appliances and the cabinets.
The space is located in turn-of-the-century brownstone, so we tried to stay in keeping with that era but provide an updated and functional space.
One of the primary challenges of this project was a chimney that jutted into the space. The old configuration meandered around the chimney creating some strange configurations and odd depths for the countertop.
We finally decided that just flushing out the wall along the chimney instead would create a cleaner look and in the end a better functioning space. It also created the opportunity to access those new pockets of space behind the wall with appliance garages to create a unique and functional feature.
The new galley kitchen has the sink on one side and the range opposite with the refrigerator on the end of the run. This very functional layout also provides large runs of counter space and plenty of storage. The washer/dryer were relocated to the opposite side of the kitchen per the client's request, and hide behind a large custom bi-fold door when not in use.
A wine fridge and microwave are tucked under the counter so that the primary visual is the custom mullioned doors with antique glass and custom marble backsplash design. White cabinetry, Carrera countertops and an apron sink complete the vintage feel of the space, and polished nickel hardware and light fixtures add a little bit of bling.

Example of a large trendy gender-neutral reach-in closet design in New York with flat-panel cabinets and medium tone wood cabinets

This living room was sad. There was no rug. The massive leather sofa dominated the room. Furniture was strewn all over. There was no focal point or any interest.
First, we changed the wall color from a cold blue color to a warmer beige color to make the room feel more inviting.
We have a custom rug created from wall-to-wall carpet with a leather edge banding detail that was mitered at the corners.
The existing sectional and separated it. The pillows that came with the sofa were donated to charity and new pillows were handcrafted created of luxurious silk velvet and a metallic woven geometric.
A new midcentury style chair was added and styled with a cashmere through in a strawberry and magenta stria; a woven geometric pillow in neutral tones was added as an accent.
The existing cocktail was placed between the two sofas and we styled it with white orchids in an organic wood bowl with moss and other succulents draping the edge. The client had this beautiful piece of amethyst that provided an organic and colorful accent.
A local artist created the art above the sofa made with later cut aluminum that reads, "this would look great over your sofa", which I thought was clever.
Our client's dogs are very important to her. We had the photos from their photoshoot framed in black frames with white mats to showcase the family.
The luxury leather wrapped nesting tables with polished chrome bases were placed to the arm side of the sofa and accessories with finds from local specialty showrooms and mixed with the client's own collection of priceless treasures and memories.
With the corner of the room, we chose a fiddle leaf fig tree to provide some color and bring in a organic element.
The large window provide plenty of natural light in this space, so we diffused it with a soft white sheet and custom drapery on rings with a satin nickel rod specially crafted for this home in keeping with the style.
Finally, we purchased the seven foot tall male and female statues to take advantage of the vaulted ceiling and to give a sense of drama.
So, tell us, what do you think of our transformation?
