Our clients chose a modern tile was in the shower and on the floor to provide a continuous flow. We used Lanmark solid surfacing as the shower pan in this bathroom as it has no grout lines and is easy to maintain. The matching tile base trim continued the pattern in the floor up onto the trim vertically. We installed a Signature Hardware vanity made in bamboo, and replaced the countertop and undermount sink. George Kovacs Saber II lights were used to frame the new mirror. Hansgrohe shower fixtures and faucets were installed in brushed nickel. Sherwin Williams White Shoulders paint was applied to add more brightness to this lovely bathroom. This narrow bath was transformed with Grasscloth paper, new narrow tall toilet, and the art was hung in a fashion to accentuate the long space. Hint: hang art at a height above shoulder height to prevent accidents.

There, bold theatrical colors, like a black textured wallcovering and bright teal sofa, mix with funky patterns, such as a black-and-white striped chair, to create a space that exudes charm. In fact, it’s the wife’s style that initially inspired the design for the home on the 20th floor of a Brickell Key high-rise. “As soon as I saw her with a green leather jacket draped across her shoulders, I knew we would be doing something chic that was nothing like the typical all- white modern Miami aesthetic,” says designer Maite Granda of Robyn’s ensemble the first time they met. Use of a medium Tennessee Fieldstone in a dry stack pattern along with Pennsylvania Blustone for a new pool deck and patio in a dimensional pattern. A PA Bluestone is also used for the countertop of the outdoor kitchen. A premium brown Canyon Creek flagstone is used for the chimney hearth as well as shoulders. The decorative curved masonry wall is matching Tenn. Fieldstone dry stack and Canyon Creek flagstone cap. The kitchen has electrical outlets throughout and items used for this specific kitchen are a new natural gas 4 burner grill and a Green Egg. Storage is plenty with a double door cabinet underneath grill. A FANTASTIC outdoor living hardscape with plenty of area for fun and/or relaxation.

Positioned a short walk from the main house, the Bunk House has 3 bedrooms, a small kitchen, half bath (assuming use of the outdoor shower at the main house) and a small living area adjacent a water facing deck with a sliding door. The bunk house deliberately is purposed as a 3 season structure with open uninsulated walls reminiscent of the lake front "camps" that still populate the lake. A wood stove, provides adequate heat in shoulder seasons or cold summer days.

Two design elements that contribute to the deck’s distinctive finished appearance are picture framing and parting boards. You see the art of picture framing where we used darker contrasting boards to frame the pool and its concrete shoulder. We inserted parting boards where two sections of the deck meet with boards running diagonally in different directions. Diagonals running in different directions and set off with parting boards are visual markers indicating sections of the deck that can be used as individual rooms.

This vertically-oriented home makes the most of a tight urban site. The north wall is folded over top of the home to become a protective wrap around a secret south-facing rooftop terrace. One half of the terrace has been enclosed with a folding glass wall to create a true indoor/outdoor space that's comfortable well into the shoulder seasons.⁠ This energy-efficient home includes high efficiency triple-glazed windows and integrated solar power generation.

This medium sized bathroom had ample space to create a luxurious bathroom for this young professional couple with 3 young children. My clients really wanted a place to unplug and relax where they could retreat and recharge. New cabinets were a must with customized interiors to reduce cluttered counter tops and make morning routines easier and more organized. We selected Hale Navy for the painted finish with an upscale recessed panel door. Honey bronze hardware is a nice contrast to the navy paint instead of an expected brushed silver. For storage, a grooming center to organize hair dryer, curling iron and brushes keeps everything in place for morning routines. On the opposite, a pull-out organizer outfitted with trays for smaller personal items keeps everything at the fingertips. I included a pull-out hamper to keep laundry and towels off the floor. Another design detail I like to include is drawers in the sink cabinets. It is much better to have drawers notched for the plumbing when organizing bathroom products instead of filling up a large base cabinet. The room already had beautiful windows and was bathed in naturel light from an existing skylight. I enhanced the natural lighting with some recessed can lights, a light in the shower as well as sconces around the mirrored medicine cabinets. The best thing about the medicine cabinets is not only the additional storage but when both doors are opened you can see the back of your head. The inside of the cabinet doors are mirrored. Honey Bronze sconces are perfect lighting at the vanity for makeup and shaving. A larger shower for my very tall client with a built-in bench was a priority for this bathroom. I recommend stream showers whenever designing a bathroom and my client loved the idea of that feature as a surprise for his wife. Steam adds to the wellness and health aspect of any good bathroom design. We were able to access a small closet space just behind the shower a perfect spot for the steam unit. In addition to the steam, a handheld shower is another “standard” item in our shower designs. I like to locate these near a bench so you can sit while you target sore shoulder and back muscles. Another benefit is cleanability of the shower walls and being able to take a quick shower without getting your hair wet. The slide bar is just the thing to accommodate different heights. For Mrs. a tub for soaking and relaxing were the main ingredients required for this remodel. Here I specified a Bain Ultra freestanding tub complete with air massage, chromatherapy and a heated back rest. The tub filer is floor mounted and adds another element of elegance to the bath. I located the tub in a bay window so the bather can enjoy the beautiful view out of the window. It is also a great way to relax after a round of golf. Either way, both of my clients can enjoy the benefits of this tub. The tiles selected for the shower and the lower walls of the bathroom are a slightly oversized subway tile in a clean and bright white. The floors are a 12x24 porcelain marble. The shower floor features a flat cut marble pebble tile. Behind the vanity the wall is tiled with Zellage tile in a herringbone pattern. The colors of the tile connect all the colors used in the bath. The final touches of elegance and luxury to complete our design, the soft lilac paint on the walls, the mix of metal materials on the faucets, cabinet hardware, lighting and yes, an oversized heated towel warmer complete with robe hooks. This truly is a space for rejuvenation and wellness.

With ornate carving and exquisite starburst veneer, our Catania Mediterranean Bed crowns a master suite with the rich rocaille ornamentation typical of early 18th century Catalonia. The handcarved headboard boasts a scrolling serpentine edge that meanders from the shoulders to a center cartouche surrounded by laurel and acanthus leaves. True old-world craftsmanship shines in the headboard field, where a primavera veneer creates a subtle starburst pattern.

Pack your bags, today we are heading out to the Netherlands! The Villa Aan De Vect is a beautiful modern home designed by the architectural firm HOGO from Helmon, in the Netherlands. The home, inside and out, incorporates the clean lines and neutral tones that we’ve come to expect from modern design. However, the designers were able to sprinkle in a few traditional elements such as muted still-life paintings, representational sculpture, and a reclaimed wood table that could hold the dinner conversation all on its own. The Villa Aan De Vect transitions between traditional and modern style with an elegant ease — both time periods resting comfortably on the strong shoulders of great design.

I think that many carpenters today consider nails and screws to be what holds a structure together. As a result, I think that many structures today are held together by little more than nails and screws. I often see knee braces bolted to the side of a post for a pergola when they should be positioned between the post and beam to take the load directly. Fasteners should not be load-bearing! They should be used to pin a piece of lumber into a position that allows it to shoulder the load directly. Nails and screws are fast. When used appropriately, they can keep costs down by reducing the time it takes to build something. But they are not the answer to everything. Joist hangars do little to stop a deck from pulling away from a house, just as nailing from the side is not a replacement for putting a post directly under a beam. On more than one occasion I've solved a challenging framing problem by employing lap-joints. I've used lap-jointed framing to build curves without having to bend wood, and in the example shown I've used them simply to avoid having to look at an unsightly beam underneath a raised section of deck. I cut notches half way through my beam where the joists will go, then I cut a corresponding notch into each joist that allows it to fit into the notch in the beam. This allows the joists to cantilever 'through' the beam, which gives me a number of advantages. Using this technique, I can build deck frames tight to the ground without having to rim the structure with joist-hangared beams. I can also use the cantilever to sculpt the edge of the deck into nearly any shape. As the lumber is locked in from every direction, it is also a far stronger joint than a joist-hangared butt-end, as it resists pulling away, and it is stronger than joist-on-beam because it does not allow for any twisting or 'flopping' of the joists. The beam and joist are locked together, and they each replace the missing pieces of one another, so there is no strength lost in either member. -Tyler Collins, Operations Manager
