This beautiful secluded house and art studio, hand built by a Japanese Potter, has been given a new life as a writing studio for its owner. The building, having been neglected and uninhabited for some time, was in danger of being demolished. The owner’s recognition of the underlying spirit of the place, in what can only be described as a labor of love, worked with the designers and the artisans to bring this building back to life. The stone cylinder at the center of the building houses bathrooms and mechanical systems, allowing the remainder of the building to remain open. The new cedar posts, stair, custom cabinets and handcrafted sliding doors are among the details that were chosen to complement the restoration of the underlying building, ensuring a long life for this peaceful retreat.

The broad stroke design of this home harkens to sap houses and agricultural structures of the Northeast which inspired the inclusion of a clerestory, cylindrical silo-like stairwell, and site-harvested stone. It was important for the family of five to have a central living space that felt settled and intimate while being able to host guests. The resulting 36’ x 36’ great room is characterized by its “circle in a square” frame that is the core to the overall basket-like structure. Lower volumes are created, and dimensionality is woven in with arched timber brackets and curving lines. The curves and arches were realized with a combination of double sawn solid timbers and grain-matched glulams

“Neither my temperament nor my history with Fine Homebuilding inclines me to be impressed by trophy houses, the place is impressive. Your designers and framers did an amazing job—craftsmanship on the highest order.” – Kevin Ireton, writer and former publisher of Fine Homebuilding Magazine.

A DESIGN FOR A CUSTOM SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCE LOCATED IN A WOODY NOOK OUTSIDE OF HUDSON, NY; 90 MILES OUTSIDE OF NORTH OF NEW YORK CITY. THE CLIENTS CAME WITH IDEAS AND OPENNESS TO DISCOVER A WAY TO GAIN SIGHTLINES OF THE NEARBY CATSKILL MOUNTAIN RANGE TO THE WEST AND THE BERKSHIRES TO THE EAST, YET STILL MAINTAIN THE PRIVACY THE WOODS AFFORDED. BY LIFTING UP THE SINGLE STORY RESIDENCE WE DISCOVERED THAT THE HOUSE GAINS SWEEPING VIEWS AND INCREASES PRIVACY. THE ADDITIONAL STRUCTURE REQUIRED IS EQUIVALENT COST OF DIGGING IN AND WATERPROOFING A BASEMENT. THE HOUSE WAS DESIGNED AND DETAIL TO MEET PASSIVE HOUSE IDEOLOGIES, INCORPERATED SOLAR PANELS, AND GEOTHERMAL HEATING TO ENCOUAGE SUSTAINABLE LIVING.
