Inspiration for an eclectic porch remodel in DC Metro

The homeowners just outside of Halifax in Lucasville, Nova Scotia, wanted to upgrade their backyard living area. Private woodland surrounds the property and they wanted to get out and enjoy their yard as much as possible. The original builder-box wood deck was removed and the replaced with a multi-level entertainment area. The new deck incorporates plenty of space for dining and grilling, with patio doors just off the kitchen. Silver Maple TimberTech composite decking is accented with black aluminum rail and glass inlays to maximize the view. Riser lights help guide you down to the new patio below. The small gravel area outside the basement door was excavated and replaced with Trevista pavers. The curved patio includes a future hot tub space and a comfortable lounging area in the sunshine. Stone steps lead you to the shaded entertainment area beneath the deck. To finish the space and mimic the front of the home, columns were wrapped in white vinyl and custom stone facing.

Featuring 3D porcelain tile from Italy, hand-carved geometric tribal pattern in vanity's cabinet doors, hand-finished industrial-style navy/charcoal 24x24" wall tiles, and oversized 24x48" porcelain HD printed marble patterned wall tiles. Flooring in waterproof LVP, continued from bedroom into bathroom and closet. Brushed gold faucets and shower fixtures. Authentic, hand-pierced Moroccan globe light over tub for beautiful shadows for relaxing and romantic soaks in the tub. Vanity pendant lights with handmade glass, hand-finished gold and silver tones layers organic design over geometric tile backdrop. Open, glass panel all-tile shower with 48x48" window (glass frosted after photos were taken). Shower pan tile pattern matches 3D tile pattern. Arched medicine cabinet from West Elm. Separate toilet room with sound dampening built-in wall treatment for enhanced privacy. Frosted glass doors throughout. Vent fan with integrated heat option. Tall storage cabinet for additional space to store body care products and other bathroom essentials. Original bathroom plumbed for two sinks, but current homeowner has only one user for this bathroom, so we capped one side, which can easily be reopened in future if homeowner wants to return to a double-sink setup. Driftwood Residence is a full-house renovation designed for a family of six, transforming an existing structure into a contemporary, multifunctional home built for long-term living. The project reimagines circulation, natural light, and material expression while preserving the essence of the original house. The renovation reorganizes all three levels. The basement was redesigned to include four children’s bedrooms and a shared playroom with custom built-ins. On the main floor, the guest bedroom was planned as a future primary suite for aging in place. The living area, previously defined by asymmetrical windows and an offset fireplace, was reconfigured to create a balanced and functional layout. The new second floor was built after reconstructing the roof, adding a complete master level with a bedroom, ensuite bathroom, walk-in closet, and a private terrace illuminated by large skylights. The interior design reflects the clients’ preference for a darker, warmer palette. Materials include dark oak, silver travertine, and backlit onyx, supported by a lighting strategy of indirect LED accents for depth and atmosphere. Two original wood-burning fireplaces were integrated into the new design, and the existing wine cellar was preserved and expanded for the clients’ lifestyle. The result is a home that feels renewed and cohesive—combining contemporary design, functional planning, and materials that age gracefully over time.

Designed by Nancy Knickerbocker of Reico Kitchen & Bath in Southern Pines, NC this main bathroom features Green Forest Cabinetry in Park Place White with Silestone Desert Silver vanity countertops and Kohler plumbing fixtures. The shower walls feature Happy Floors Glacier Wave porcelain wall tile and flooring is Emser Tile Explorer Paris. “The house is over 21 years old and needed some updating so we decided to redo the main bath and called Reico Kitchen & Bath,” said the clients. “The old bathroom had a poor layout with too many space robbing amenities. Our new master bath looks amazing! It's bright, modern and very appealing and will certainly be a selling feature in the future.” “The existing plan included a large, corner tub under the windows. The homeowner wanted to enjoy this space before selling their home and wanted to remove the tub and have a larger shower. The best way to enlarge the shower was to take advantage of the corner,” said Nancy. “The sinks were moved to another wall to allow more open space when entering the room. A sophisticated, yet livable, redesign took this Mediterranean-style home from old-world to a transitional/soft contemporary look. Opting to acknowledge the client’s past New York, Miami and LA residences, modern touches were added throughout. Leveraging the new kitchen backsplash, mixed hues and patterns of blues and grays flow through each room, adding cohesive style as well as needed pops of color. The neutral color palette of the main upholstery pieces and multi-colored artwork allows the homeowner’s future flexibility to introduce different colored accents to their rooms, creating new looks and maximizing the possibilities within their existing design. In the main living space, a dramatic, large-scale tile design created a newly-defined statement wall in the family room—balancing the originally problematic offset fireplace. The oyster shell artwork above the fireplace, geometric etagere, and soft and sleek seating complement the tile and allow it to remain a grounding element in the room, while colorful artwork, rugs, and upholstery ensure the room stays lively. The brightly lit dining room boasts a bold blue hue and dramatic drapery to make an impactful statement without upstaging the rest of the surrounding rooms. A mica-chipped accent wall in the bedroom was the perfect backdrop to the white lacquer and chrome details in the furnishings. We added additional vivid fuchsia accents (the clients’ favorite color) and fuzzy textures to balance the edgy details, keeping an overall soft, feminine look.

The media console is filled with items of the owner's that she already had. We added a bit of metallic gold with the star there and a pop of blue with the pineapple. The white tray with gold handles on the coffee table continues the metallic sheen, which is a must to add right now to be on trend. Silver Koi fish swim in the tray on the coffee table for an unexpected surprise. These items are all fun and also inexpensive, so they can be changed easily in the future for a new trendy look without a lot of expense. I asked the owner to select some coffee table books for her tray that reflect her mood and energy to bring this into the room. What's her mood? It says right there on the covers, what she wanted this room to look and feel like --- Relaxed Coastal Style and Island Whimsy. I think we nailed it. :)

The siding and trim are made from inexpensive but long-lasting Maine-milled White Cedar, installed in a reverse board and batten style which allows drainage and airflow behind the boards to extend their life. The siding was also left unfinished to weather to a silver grey, reducing cost, ecological footprint, and the need for future maintenance that paint or solid stain would incur.
