You don't have to own a big celebrity mansion to have a beautifully appointed house finished with unique and special materials. When my clients bought an average condo kitted out with all the average builder-grade things that average builders stuff into spaces like that, they longed to make it theirs. Being collectors of colorful Fiesta tableware and lovers of extravagant stone, we set about infusing the space with a dose of their fun personality.
There wasn’t a corner of the house that went untouched in this extensive renovation. The ground floor got a complete make-over with a new Calacatta Gold tile floor, and I designed a very special border of Lunada Bay glass mosaic tiles that outlines the edge of every room.
We ripped out a solid walled staircase and replaced it with a visually lighter cable rail system, and a custom hanging chandelier now shines over the living room.
The kitchen was redesigned to take advantage of a wall that was previously just shallow pantry storage. By opening it up and installing cabinetry, we doubled the counter space and made the kitchen much more spacious and usable. We also removed a low hanging set of upper cabinets that cut off the kitchen from the rest of the ground floor spaces. Acquarella Fantasy quartzite graces the counter surfaces and continues down in a waterfall feature in order to enjoy as much of this stone’s natural beauty as possible.
One of my favorite spaces turned out to be the primary bathroom. The scheme for this room took shape when we were at a slab warehouse shopping for material. We stumbled across a packet of a stunning quartzite called Fusion Wow Dark and immediately fell in love. We snatched up a pair of slabs for the counter as well as the back wall of the shower. My clients were eager to be rid of a tub-shower alcove and create a spacious curbless shower, which meant a full piece of stone on the entire long wall would be stunning. To compliment it, I found a neutral, sandstone-like tile for the return walls of the shower and brought it around the remaining walls of the space, capped with a coordinating chair rail. But my client's love of gold and all things sparkly led us to a wonderful mosaic. Composed of shifting hues of honey and gold, I envisioned the mosaic on the vanity wall and as a backing for the niche in the shower. We chose a dark slate tile to ground the room, and designed a luxurious, glass French door shower enclosure. Little touches like a motion-detected toe kick night light at the vanity, oversized LED mirrors, and ultra-modern plumbing fixtures elevate this previously simple bathroom.
And I designed a watery-themed guest bathroom with a deep blue vanity, a large LED mirror, toe kick lights, and customized handmade porcelain tiles illustrating marshland scenes and herons.

This classic post-and-beam house sits on a ridge in the Riviera neighborhood of Santa Barbara, CA. With stunning views of Gibraltar Rock, Mission Canyon, and Cielito Overlook, the house’s original designers sited it perfectly and implemented an elegantly simple structural system based on a clear design vision. Unfortunately, several subsequent owners lacked that same clarity and made questionable remodeling choices based on passing style fads, effectively turning the house into something it was not and – most perplexing of all – turning their backs to the majesty of the surrounding mountains and valley.
Working with the new owner, who saw through the noise of these misguided remodels, we set out to return the house to its roots and recreate its rhythmic geometry and interior flow. We added new wall-to-wall double sliding doors that open to the expansive northern views, bringing space and light to the living, dining, and kitchen areas and providing easy access to the surrounding natural environment. We also reconsidered the color palette and materials, simplified detailing and trim, and highlighted interior focal points such as the original slump block fireplace and newly remodeled kitchen. The house now entertains easily and provides a comfortable and gracious living space for its owner and guests.

One of the great features of a high performance home are the deep window sills. The detailing is kept simple, with a deep wood sill and drywall returns around the openings.

Simple, satin nickel contemporary hardware reiterates the linear elements throughout. Interior detailing features rich walnut to complement the herringbone floors. The custom hood is hammered stainless steel to play off the plinth block island legs. The undeniable focal point is the stunning Calacatta Corchia marble selected for the countertops and full-height backsplash and walls. The lighting is a unique, suspended adjustable LED fixture. The twin side-by-side Sub-Zero Pro Fridge/Freezer columns include a glass front to highlight interior storage. Idaho Springs, CO | Set amidst the towering pines of Colorado’s gold country, a couple and their girls return to the hills they grew up in. The home is envisioned as a simple and durable yet elegant mountain home. The value of the home almost doubled, and the homeowner saw a return on investment that was three times what they put into the project. This was evidenced by the sale price in 2023. Our meticulous attention to detail and dedication to excellence ensured that every aspect of the remodel not only met but exceeded the homeowner's expectations.

This kitchen was the dream kitchen for these homeowners. This now expansive space was originally only half the size of what you see now! However, opening up this space was no simple task, as one single wall seemed to have every item you wish to not have in a wall you plan on moving, from an HVAC return, electrical, as well as being a load-bearing wall! Nonetheless, we turned this vision into a reality, and bumped out that wall! This now expanded kitchen is full of cabinet storage, countertop working space, and a beautiful island with seating. This kitchen is now a perfect entertainment space with the exact function as well as style for these homeowners to enjoy for years to come!

Designed and built by Terramor Homes in Raleigh, NC. We also incorporated a comfortably sized guest bedroom suite that adjoins the bathroom that was designed to be used for all guests in the basement area. Another important objective in this basement area, is the fact that the door to the flagstone patio outside, then leads you through the back yard and back to the greenway and river behind. This was the main reason for this home site being chosen- for full enjoyment of all that the river and greenway have to offer- from paddle boarding, tubing, swimming, fishing to running and biking on the greenway. It was imperative that a space be created for the return of any of those trips. A tile floored mudroom was created from that entrance to include a sink for quick washing of hands, cabinets for extra supplies that could be needed, hooks for hanging towels and direct access to the bathroom with walk in shower for muddy boots, wet swim suits and any other items or creatures that may find their way back in. The décor was also kept simple and in keeping with the theme. Walls in horizontal planking, an old fashioned wall mounted sink and restoration looking barn style light fixtures both above the sink and on the ceiling complete the look we wanted to achieve.

PHILIPPE STARCK’S DESIGN SEARCHES FOR THE ORIGIN OF THINGS. | The simple, natural, fundamental elements of life. With his Starck 1 range, he achieved just that… and almost immediately wrote bathroom history. With Starck 1, Philippe Starck and Duravit have returned to the beginnings of hygiene, body care and wellness in addition to the evolution of the bathroom. The Starck 1 toilet, bathtub and washbasin are unmistakable descendents of their historic predecessors – the bucket, tub and washbowl – even though they have been completely reinterpreted. It’s great to know that something good doesn’t have to be “optimized”: since their market launch in 1994, all products in the range – ceramic, furniture, tubs, accessories – have been meticulously crafted by hand using the same methods. This quality is nothing less than you would expect from a modern classic like Starck 1. | Design by Philippe Starck | Available at www.ShopStudio41.com
