My client wanted to remove their tub for a large walk-n shower. We made his and her vanities and a large walk-in shower with a bench seat and all the controls hidden out of site. The blue cabinets pop against the grey and give a beautiful transitional feel to this room.

The small, yet statement-making bar is located in a great area: between the living room and around the corner from the kitchen. This way, you won't miss a segment of your favorite TV show or sports team playing. The large drawers keep cups and utensils out of site until they're ready to use. The open shelving can display more interesting accessories or your favorite drinks. And the small sink ensures your dishes are clean and ready for the next get-together.

This 800 square foot Accessory Dwelling Unit steps down a lush site in the Portland Hills. The street facing balcony features a sculptural bronze and concrete trough spilling water into a deep basin. The split-level entry divides upper-level living and lower level sleeping areas. Generous south facing decks, visually expand the building's area and connect to a canopy of trees. The mid-century modern details and materials of the main house are continued into the addition. Inside a ribbon of white-washed oak flows from the entry foyer to the lower level, wrapping the stairs and walls with its warmth. Upstairs the wood's texture is seen in stark relief to the polished concrete floors and the crisp white walls of the vaulted space. The open-plan second floor now provides efficient gallery space for a portion of the owners' contemporary art collection. Bubble lights – the Gregg Pendant, designed by Ludovica +Roberto Palomba for Foscarini – provide even lighting throughout this tall, narrow space.

The Angelino ADU is a two-story ADU in Burbank, California, designed as a two-bedroom accessory dwelling unit that balances privacy, natural light, and efficient residential living on a constrained site. Positioned between two existing units, the project places a 1,000-square-foot upper-level residence above a generous three-car garage, creating a well-resolved living environment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a full kitchen. The design was shaped by the challenge of building alongside taller multifamily structures, where privacy, daylight, and ventilation all had to be carefully considered. Strategic window placement and thoughtfully located skylights bring natural light deep into the interior while maintaining a strong sense of seclusion. This approach also supports cross ventilation throughout the living spaces, contributing to a more comfortable and functional home. Rather than treating the ADU as a secondary structure, the project was designed as a complete residential environment with a clear emphasis on livability, efficiency, and contemporary use. The result is a thoughtfully planned Burbank accessory dwelling unit that responds to site constraints with practical spatial organization, natural light, and everyday comfort.

With adjacent neighbors within a fairly dense section of Paradise Valley, Arizona, C.P. Drewett sought to provide a tranquil retreat for a new-to-the-Valley surgeon and his family who were seeking the modernism they loved though had never lived in. With a goal of consuming all possible site lines and views while maintaining autonomy, a portion of the house — including the entry, office, and master bedroom wing — is subterranean. This subterranean nature of the home provides interior grandeur for guests but offers a welcoming and humble approach, fully satisfying the clients requests. While the lot has an east-west orientation, the home was designed to capture mainly north and south light which is more desirable and soothing. The architecture’s interior loftiness is created with overlapping, undulating planes of plaster, glass, and steel. The woven nature of horizontal planes throughout the living spaces provides an uplifting sense, inviting a symphony of light to enter the space. The more voluminous public spaces are comprised of stone-clad massing elements which convert into a desert pavilion embracing the outdoor spaces. Every room opens to exterior spaces providing a dramatic embrace of home to natural environment. Grand Award winner for Best Interior Design of a Custom Home The material palette began with a rich, tonal, large-format Quartzite stone cladding. The stone’s tones gaveforth the rest of the material palette including a champagne-colored metal fascia, a tonal stucco system, and ceilings clad with hemlock, a tight-grained but softer wood that was tonally perfect with the rest of the materials. The interior case goods and wood-wrapped openings further contribute to the tonal harmony of architecture and materials. Grand Award Winner for Best Indoor Outdoor Lifestyle for a Home This award-winning project was recognized at the 2020 Gold Nugget Awards with two Grand Awards, one for Best Indoor/Outdoor Lifestyle for a Home, and another for Best Interior Design of a One of a Kind or Custom Home. At the 2020 Design Excellence Awards and Gala presented by ASID AZ North, Ownby Design received five awards for Tonal Harmony. The project was recognized for 1st place – Bathroom; 3rd place – Furniture; 1st place – Kitchen; 1st place – Outdoor Living; and 2nd place – Residence over 6,000 square ft. Congratulations to Claire Ownby, Kalysha Manzo, and the entire Ownby Design team. Tonal Harmony was also featured on the cover of the July/August 2020 issue of Luxe Interiors + Design and received a 14-page editorial feature entitled “A Place in the Sun” within the magazine.
